76 Police

Cheng Yao lowered her head and whispered, “When I was in primary school, my father was cheated out of a lot of money in business. He couldn’t take the pressure and committed suicide by jumping off a building…”

Yin Tao didn’t know how to comfort Cheng Yao, so she could only listen quietly.

“Mom lost her mind after she found out that Dad had committed suicide. She is still in the hospital.”

Cheng Yao had cried countless times and was almost numb now. She could now calmly recount this terrifying experience. “My brother was still in high school at that time. His grades were originally very good and he could easily get into a good university. However, because of what happend at home, my brother had to drop out of school to take care of me.”

At the mention of Cheng Fei, Cheng Yao’s tears flowed uncontrollably. “Brother worked while supporting me in my studies. Our family still owed a lot of debt. We don’t have any other relatives. We can only rely on Brother alone to work and repay the debt bit by bit.”

Sensing Cheng Yao’s sadness, Yin Tao patted her shoulder and comforted, “Your brother has done well. He’s very strong, and he’s taken good care of you.”

Cheng Yao’s eyes suddenly turned red as she hugged Yin Tao and sobbed, “But I think my brother is in a lot of pain now.”

Yin Tao felt that Cheng Yao had a lot on her mind. She was after all sixteen or seventeen years old, so how could she be totally unaware of these things? Her usual innocent and sunny appearance was probably a front to reassure Cheng Fei.

“Yaoyao, why do you think so?” Yin Tao gently patted Cheng Yao’s back. Although she didn’t want to make use of a little girl to find clues, she had no other choice.

“I’ve seen my brother sob alone secretly. He’s always very gentle in front of me, and he always has a smile on his face.” Cheng Yao thought of Cheng Fei crying, and tears flowed from the corners of her eyes.

“A few days ago, I was thirsty at night and wanted to get a glass of water, but I saw my brother crying on the sofa in the hall.” Cheng Yao sniffled and continued, “This is the first time I’ve seen my brother cry so sadly. He was curled up on the sofa and looked especially frail.”

Yin Tao wiped Cheng Yao’s tears with a piece of tissue and continued listening to her. “I didn’t dare make a sound. I could only hide in the corner of the second floor and secretly cry with my brother. My brother has always been very strong in front of me. I know that he definitely doesn’t want me to know this.”

Yin Tao felt that the little girl in front of her was exceptionally sensible. She didn’t know if it was because they were biological siblings, but Yin Tao felt that the two of them had very strong personalities. For the sake of each other, they could hide all the pressure in their hearts.

“Your brother is fine. He also needs to vent his emotions occasionally. Don’t be afraid.” Yin Tao gently stroked Cheng Yao’s head. Although the little girl was young, she was about the same height as her.

“I’m not afraid. When I’m older, I’ll protect my brother.” Cheng Yao thought for a moment and asked Yin Tao, “Big Sister, I want to enroll in the police academy. Do you think I can do it?”

Yin Tao was surprised that Cheng Yao actually wanted to become a police officer. A cute little girl like her would look very out of place in a police uniform.

“Of course. Yaoyao, did you want to become a police officer to protect your brother?” Yin Tao looked at the little girl and nodded vigorously. She liked her more and more.

Glancing at the painting on Cheng Yao’s desk, Yin Tao exhorted, “But if you want to be a police officer, you have to study harder in the future. It’s not enough to just draw well.”

Cheng Yao nodded her head in disappointment and asked Yin Tao, “Am I not allowed to draw anymore if I become a police officer?”

Yin Tao felt that this young lady probably really liked painting, but in order to better protect Cheng Fei, she wanted to become a police officer.

“Why not? These two things are not contradictory.” Yin Tao looked at Cheng Yao, who was staring at her intently, and continued, “There are also police officers in the police station who draw well. As portrait painters, they can also catch criminals.”

“Really?” Cheng Yao’s eyes seemed to be shining. Yin Tao’s words made her yearn for the profession of a police officer even more.

“Of course. If you work hard and learn one more skill, you’ll have another choice in the future.” Yin Tao felt that Cheng Yao had a lot of potential. Although she looked frail, there was a tenacity in her heart, and Yin Tao admired her.

Suddenly, there was a light knock on the door. Cheng Fei’s voice came from outside. “Dinner is ready. Come and eat.”

Yin Tao and Cheng Yao looked at each other and smiled before walking out of the bedroom.

“What are you talking about? You look so happy.” Cheng Fei couldn’t help but feel happy when he saw the two girls walking out of the bedroom smiling.
