Chapter 8 - Regular Infected

*Thunk*

A sickening sound traveled out as the blade neatly sliced into the head, I pulled it out as fast as I could and swung the sword like a baseball bat at the 2nd one. Another thunk sounded out, as I cut about half way through his face.

The others finally reacted and slowly started to raise their heads, mouths covered in bright red blood. The sight made me sick, and seemed to drive more rage into me. The coldness in my head spread and I kicked the second infected I had my sword stuck into. The kick helped me to force out the blade, and I then used the momentum of taking out the blade, to slash to my right, hitting the 3rd one in its jaw, also killing it.

One of them lunged towards and instead of panicking like I usually would, the cold rage made me focus enough that I could throw a kick at its body. That might have been a mistake though as it hurt like hell.

At least it forced the infected to fall backwards blocking 2 of them.

As I was pulling the blade out of the 3rd zombie, another one coming from the other direction, stood up and started making its way towards me. At that moment.

(!Congratulations you have reached Level 2!)

Crap!!

My vision was blocked, and in my fl.u.s.ter, I fell over backwards, tripping on one of the dead bodies. By the time I had forced the blue screen to go away, it was standing over me.

I panicked for the first time since I started this fight and even that cold rage couldn't calm me down. It lunged towards me and all I could do was quickly raise the blade in my hands.

An immense force almost snapped my wrist, as a huge weight fell on my body. I was lucky in the fact that, when I raised my blade it had nicely fallen around its neck area. As it lunged at me, it had cleanly sliced into its own neck and almost fully decapitating itself.

I struggled under the weight of the infected and tried to push it off me. I knew I had no time for this. There were 3 closing in.

This body was weirdly very heavy, as if it were a 120kg person. Even with my improved strength it took me a good 7 seconds to shift it off and crawl away.

I was covered in blood as I tried to get my bearings. The other 3 infected had recovered and were making their way over; I had to quickly organize myself. I staggered up and brandished my blade. I say brandished, but I just held it up in a baseball stance. I backed off quickly and assessed my surroundings.

Because this was a main reception area, it was a lot bigger than the corridor I had come from. I had to move back and create room for myself. The weakness of these things, were their speed. I had to use it against them.

I backed off and gave myself a good area to work with. I then stared at the enemy. They looked different from what I had seen before. Well one of them was the same, but the other 2 looked different. Instead of the black tar coming out of their mouths, there was nothing. Instead they had a deeper blue shade to their skin, as if they were cadavers, and their eyes were red in color.

Once I noticed this difference, I also noticed that they were moving faster than I had seen before.

Crap, are they different?

I quickly used Analyze on them to see what was up.

OH CRAP!!

I started to sweat a lot harder as they approached, they weren't like the others they were full blown infected. They weren't turning like the other ones I faced. Looking at their agility it had doubled, not to mention their other stats; they are so much more deadly.

The rage that had fueled me before seemed to have cooled down and I almost pissed myself in the face of this new threat. God why didn't I check this before I started the fight, I should of god damn checked.

Well it's too late for regrets, I still have a better AGI, I should be able to win this, I have to win this. I regained my confidence as they closed in. They were both of the same speed so they reached me around the same time. I dashed to my left and circled around them, they were too dangerous right now, I needed to take out the weaker one.

I ran towards the one that lagged behind and faced it head on. I wouldn't have time to also run around it before the others caught up.

I had to face him head on. I couldn't always use the same strategy for fighting. Especially not in the future, I had to face this now.

I ran towards him and lifted my sword; he also lunged towards me. Even though he was slow, I knew if he caught me I was finished. I concentrated and watched which way its arms were coming.

I dodged to the side and successfully got out of the way, with the opening, I ruthlessly cut down with my blade. Because I was to his right, the blade lodged between its left shoulder and neck, spluttering blood out, as I pulled it up and did another quick chop towards the top of its head.

Another sickening thud and it fell dead. A wave of tiredness hit me after the swing, but I didn't have time for rest and I continued forwards. I couldn't let those behind me catch up. After a meter or two I turned around. They were about 3 meters away from me and stepping over the body of their comrade.

They were a lot faster than I expected. I again waited for them to get close then dashed around them. I swung my sword like a bat again as I rounded one and it went right into his arm. It didn't take his arm off but it should be hard for him to use it. Right?

I didn't continue to think as I kept running and swung again at his back, nothing much happened on the swing so I again retreated. It made weird noises from its mouth, and didn't seem to notice the injury as it continued towards me. This would take a while.

5-8 minutes later, I was out of breath and bent over. I had to catch my breath. That took way too long.

The blade became duller as I kept using it and I couldn't always get a clean hit off. But after finally crippling ones legs, the last one took much less time. I spent about 6 minutes on the first one, and 2 minutes on the last.

After injuring both of them enough that they couldn't move, I chopped into their heads, before they finally stopped. And now I was puffing for breath. That took so much out of me.

I have to deal a blow to their heads faster, or I won't be able to sustain a proper fight. I thought back on the battle I just had, and I paled. If I hadn't been lucky enough to get head shots in on the first 3, or if 1 more had been a regular infected, instead of being weaker. This could have gone a lot differently.

At the thought I turned my head to where they had been crowding. There was a woman's body lying there. The abject terror on her face was haunting. Her clothes were torn to shreds, and there were bite marks all over her body. As I looked at her, I realized that the clothes she was wearing were the same as mine. She had on beginner clothes identical to mine. She must have tried to fight one, and more had come, before finally she couldn't handle it.

I shook my head and turned away, I couldn't look at the gory sight before me anymore. I slowly walked over to the reception desk and sat down. I was out of energy, I needed to rest or I couldn't do anything later. I could see some glowing orbs around the place where I killed the infected, but I would get them later. For now, I'll rest.

My head flopped down and I looked at the cloth around my left arm. Some blood had splashed on to it, and that caused my eyes to tear up.

I sat there in a daze as I stared at the cloth.
