85. I’m Partial Towards You (1)

In the garden.

Most of the guests of He family were in the antechamber, and normally, nobody would come to this garden. He Yu looked at Li Zong somewhat nervously, eyes brimming with tears, which made her a very piteous sight.

Li Zong had a bland expression on his face. Due to his appearance and position, a lot of girls had once made misguided attempts to impress him. Though it had been public that he was now a married man, there were still people who secretly harbored ulterior intentions, but very few of them had the nerve to put their thoughts into action. After all, not everybody dared to mess with Li Zong.

Those conceited and brainless ones were the most difficult to deal with: He Yu, to name but one. They would never stop being troublesome until handled once and for all.

He Yu’s heart was fluttering. Recalling what Qiao Peiyu had told her, she was still fairly afraid, but then she thought that her parentage was no humbler than that of He Zheng, and she was far more powerful an exorcist than that good-for-nothing He Zheng was. On top of that, even though Li Zong was a gay, everybody knew that Li family had only two members left: Li Tiangang and Li Zong. ‘How is it possible that he doesn’t want a child?’

And she was a woman, a rather pretty one.

Of course, this was the day for He Jin’s funeral, so she didn’t dare to do anything beyond the pale.

It was a clear and very bright day. He Yu’s face was tinged with paleness resulted from heartache. Her round, almond-shaped eyes were swimming with tears. With a flutter of her eyelashes, beads of tears rolled down her cheeks from the corners of her eyes. In a tearful voice, she called, “Elder Brother Li.”

Then she gave a deep sob and with that she buckled at the knees and diagonally fell backwards.

‘Surely Li Zong won’t stand by and watch a heartbroken girl fall to the ground?’ Thinking of this, He Yu steeled herself and closed her eyes. As expected, when her back was halfway to the ground, someone put his arm around her waist and supported her. Enveloped by the smell of a masculine man, she felt her heart give a lurch, a pink flush spreading over her cheeks. ‘Mother was right. No men escape the tenderness of woman, no matter how hardened they are,’ she thought.

He Yu conveniently leaned against the man’s chest, her eyelashes wet with tears. “Brother Li, isn–isn’t it a little inappropriate for you to do this?”

“It is indeed inappropriate.”

He Yu was just about to press herself tighter against his chest when she suddenly came to the realization that the voice didn’t sound like Li Zong’s. With that, she abruptly opened her eyes and paled visibly with fear at the sight of the man’s face.

It was not Li Zong but He Changchun who was holding her!

“Dad! Ho–How did you come to be here?!” Face even paler than it had been a few moments ago, she hastened to remove herself from her father’s arms in terrible embarrassment, cutting a terribly awkward sight.

He Zheng was standing beside Li Zong. A while ago, after looking for Li Zong everywhere, he saw his father hurrying towards the garden. He followed his father and, unsurprisingly, witnessed this scene of He Yu throwing herself on Li Zong.

He Zheng curled his lip and jabbed Li Zong in the waist with his elbow, an unhappy look on his face. ‘This guy’s so outstanding wherever he is. And women never stop seeking his embrace!’

He Changchun’s face was even more sullen. A few moments ago, Li Zong had told him to come to this place and he naturally wouldn’t trifle with his words. It had never crossed his mind that he would see this embarrassing scene!

It would bring shame on He family if word got out that He Yu had feelings for Li Zong when she should not have. As a result, after merely a few moments, He Changchun, who was keen on face-saving, wiped the embarrassment on his face and remarked, “This is a stony garden. Be more careful or else you might slip over again.”

He Yu hastily inclined her head. “I will, dad. I’ll watch my steps.”

Before Li Zong could say anything, He Changchun hurriedly said to him, “Supt. Li, my daughter hurt her ankle. I’ll have her escorted to her chambers so that she could have some rest.”

Li Zong had a bland expression on his face. Nobody could tell what he was thinking.

He Changchun gave an apologetic smile. “Then… I think I should take her back to have her ankles checked first.”

Arms folded across his chest, He Zheng, eyeing the anxious face of He Changchun who was eager to leave, softly snorted.

“Wait a minute,” He Zheng said in a light voice.

“Zheng, whatever it is you want to say can wait!” He Changchun subduing his anger instructed in a highly imperative tone of voice.

Head tilted slightly, He Zheng looked very relaxed. With a half-smile on his face, he walked up to He Yu at a leisurely pace.

He Yu felt embarrassed in front of her father and Li Zong, but when faced with He Zheng, she put on a sulky face, planning to take advantage of this opportunity to slander He Zheng. However, He Yu was just about to say something when she saw that He Zheng’s expression was somewhat strange.

This countenance looked quite familiar to her. ‘This lunatic has this spurious smile on his face every time he was about to do something stupid.’

As expected, He Zheng’s voice came.

“I’m a very possessive and unreasonable man, and I hate it the most when others take the liberty of touching my stuff.” Arms folded across his chest, He Zheng looked at He Yu, as if she were something filthy. Then he twisted his head around and cast Li Zong a smile. “Fortunately, you didn’t touch her just now. Otherwise you would have to wash your hands and change clothes.”

Finding these words unbearably humiliating, He Yu flew into a rage and was just about to rebut with sharp remarks when she saw He Zheng’s face turn even colder. With a ferocious look in his eyes, He Zheng remarked, “If anybody dares to touch my man or my stuff, I might take leave of my senses and resort to methods beyond the pale!”

He Yu’s face was suffused with color. Consumed with fury, she immediately turned her head around to ask her father for help. Eyes brimming with tears, she called in a tearful voice, “Dad, you heard his words…”

Unexpectedly, this time, He Changchun didn’t come to her help. As he saw that Li Zong had no intention of blaming He Zheng for his unbridled behavior, his heart slightly sank. With a face even more sepulchral than that of He Zheng, he huffed, “Go back to your room and get some rest. Your ankle’s sprained. What are you standing here for?!”

He Yu nearly spat out a mouthful blood due to extreme rage. He Changchun forced a smile, struggling to maintain a patriarch’s dignity, and then drew He Yu away.

Unsatisfied, He Zheng coldly snorted in deep disdain. “This old fox always covers for them. He’s also a human being. I can’t understand how he comes to be so partial.”

Seeing He Zheng’s indignant face, Li Zong was secretly amused.

“It doesn’t matter how partial he is towards others. My heart beats for you, and you alone.”
