A Necromancer's Journey

Chapter 14 - The Truth About Spirit Devouring

Panicking, Seth instantly started looking around him. It took him a few minutes to come to his senses and realize what happened. Everyone was awake at this point and they were all staring at the teacher in confusion.

"As you see, spirit devouring isn't as simple as it sounds. When you devour the spirit of a creature your spirit lives life as if you were that creature's species. This is your body's way of adjusting to the merging of a new soul. I imagine the memories have already begun to fade and soon they will be just a thing of the past. As the creature becomes stronger, the difficulty of breaking free from the illusion increases and you risk forever staying in the illusion. You guys don't have to worry about the time, only a few moments have passed."

"Some people believe that the illusion is actually a parallel world, but that theory has never been proven. By now you should have already forgotten about what you've experienced, only having a vague feeling that you were gone a long time."

"Some spirit pills allow you to retain information from these spirit devourings, the memories you retain are said to have been made by the world consciousness at the cost of the devouring of the spirit. Your body's attribute increase is said to be a direct result of the enlightenment brought out by your experience as that creature."

"Some people have even remembered techniques and cultivation methods from inside their spirit devourings and have gone on to practice these techniques and methods in reality. Of course, those people had very mixed results. The consensus is that methods found inside your spirit devourings can either be incredibly useful or horribly dangerous."

"Now that that's out of the way I'm afraid we're going back to the basics. As I'm sure you're aware we have a new student today. This means I will once again give the introduction to the magus level."

"In order to become a magus, one needs to not only attain a high enough level of spirit, but also a high enough level of body. This can be accomplished in two ways, physique refining and potion taking. The potions increase the body's strength just enough to allow a breakthrough and then lowers its attributes while refining is permanent."

"When refining, your body gains both benefits and disadvantages. One who refines their body with necromantic energy, for example, gains a body that is much harder to kill, but also loses some of their morality and gains a weakness to fire. There are two paths of refining, strength refining and defense refining. Defense refining involves training your body's ability to resist magic. Strength refining involves increasing the explosive power of your physical body."

"The most common form of refining is defense refining as most mages don't engage in close combat."

"Now, what is the difference between a magus and an acolyte? The answer is simple. Their understanding of laws. Once someone reaches a certain level of understanding about a law, a core is formed inside of them. This core changes the quality of the spiritual energy inside your body and gives you the ability to influence the energy of the core around you. Some people are innately born with a core, though the core is in an inactive state until they reach the level of Magus."
