A Necromancer's Journey

Chapter 17 - Failures and Simulation

Gently placing the rabbit corpse inside the middle of the pentagram, Seth excitedly began to guide more necromantic energy into the circle and watched as the corpse slowly began to revert to the state before its death. Around halfway through its transformation, the corpse suddenly began to crack and broke into pieces of dust that blew away in the wind.

"Failure... I guess the success rate is really low..."

Seth was not discouraged by a single failure and quickly went with his undead rabbit to find more rabbits to raise. After around an hour, he returned with four rabbits.

Placing a rabbit in the middle of the pentagram, Seth once again began the process of raising it. Like this, an entire day went by and he tried to raise thirty corpses total without success. Thankfully, unlike the novels he read and games he played when on Earth, wizards in this world don't expend mana when using their abilities. As long as a wizard is capable of continuing to use their spells without fainting from the mental burden, a wizard could theoretically cast forever.

Deciding to take a break, Seth began to converse with his chip, something he hasn't really done much before now.

'Chip, what can you do?'

[I'm an artificial intelligence made for the purpose of analyzing, collecting, and storing data. I can analyze anything that I have enough energy to spend on and I can project the results out to you.]

'Can you analyze why I keep failing the ritual?'

[Host is using too much energy, the corpses can't handle it. The host has to apply an even amount of energy throughout the beginning and slowly increase the energy as the corpse gets used to the energy.]

'Can you simulate a proper resurrection?'

[Simulating... Thirty minutes required.]

Seth began to once again grow excited, perhaps he'd finally be able to raise a new undead. Picking up his bow, he once again went hunting and after thirty minutes he found two rabbits and a lizard. The population of this area seems to have decreased with the smell of blood in the air.

Returning to the circle, Seth closed his eyes and mentally watched the process of a proper ritual and realized where he kept making a mistake. He was applying more energy than the corpse could withstand at the beginning and lowering the amount of energy as time went on.

'Project the simulation of a proper ritual before me as I perform the ritual.'

[Understood.]

Seth placed a rabbit's corpse inside the pentagram and began to push energy into the circle, this time in a much smaller quantity. As time went by, he slowly increased the amount of energy when the projection did and eventually the rabbit was completely reanimated.

"Yes!" Seth shouted aloud, his voice trembling in excitement.

Seth went on to perform two more rituals and completed the resurrection of the lizard's corpse. Of course, he made sure to push the lizard's and rabbit's soul into their bodies.

Deciding that this was enough, for now, Seth returned to the sect.
