A New Age of Magic

Volume 1 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 Treasure Hunt

“Young master is really a good person. He knew that uncle Hilton wouldn’t be able to do labor work any more, not even something like cleaning a table. So hwe even thought of such a weird excuse to take care of this old man...”

After Fowls’ explanation, that was the idea in Swaydi’s mind.

She didn’t understand what Hilton said about the world, nor the real value of him. She just knew that her uncle Hilton was sick. When she saw Fowls’ trial to keep the old man safe and comfortable, of course she would respect this young master a lot more.
The awkwardness from the King game that night, now has completely gone.

“The young master definitely did not mean that… Even if he was intentional, he must have misunderstood some signals. Maybe I sent some mixed signals, maybe he thought I wanted him to…”

Swaydi felt nervous, and her heartbeat began to speed up. The young master has feelings for her? A blush of shame crept up her face.

Swaydi, pull yourself together! It was just a game! Although young master made some ambiguous moves, he did no harassments. Plus, what about Wood?!

Swaydi couldn’t stop thinking and stood in the yard for a while. She was so focused that didn’t hear Fowls’ repeating calls.

"Where did you go the whole time? You’ve been gone since early this morning. " asked Fowls with a slight cold face.

Going home to drop off packed meals was Swaydi’s morning routine, only today she took a little bit longer time... about half an hour longer than usual.

"Young master, sorry, I am so sorry, please do not deduct my wage!" Swaydi couldn’t even breathe.

This young woman, worried about her salary of a few coppers all the time. If I offer some more, I might as well just get her. Fowls looked at this woman and raised some nasty thoughts.

But, what’s fun for that... Fowls still had no facial expressions, “Then tell me, what you did wrong? If it happens again…”

"No, no." Swaydi shook her head hard, "I won’t make the mistake again, I promise. Today when I left this morning... everything was normal..."

Siweidi started her one-time-only story...

When she gave the breadcrumbs to the children, she accidentally learned some news of an old friend of hers. As soon as she was told that he might be at the Haifeng Tavern, she rushed over to look for him.

Fowls did’t expect a long story when he first started the criticism. Now he needed to hear her out.

Fowls really learned a lot of things about Swaydi from her story. Swaydi used to live by the sea. She had a mother, an elder brother and a younger brother. Her father died in a shipwreck a few years ago.

She got up early every morning and went to the bakery to buy two bags of breadcrumbs. She took the small one back home and delivered the big one to the kids in that old house.

In the past, Fowls couldn’t care less about his servants’ daily life. Now he started to pay attention.

Fowls was surprised that the little woman was willing to spend a quarter of her salary every day to get food for a group of unrelated children...

It was almost half of her wage before Fowls raised her pay. No wonder she cared so much about her salary.

Knowing all of this, Fowls started to have some sexual desire of this kind woman. Not respectful feelings, but nasty sexual desires!

If he could get a chance to punish and crash such a pure and innocent woman; if he could teach her a lesson about the evil of the world, it would be an interesting thing to do!

Swaydi stood in front of Fowls and looked like an unaltered kitten. Fowls felt more aroused. He almost started to think of a plot to lure her into his trap, till he heard the end of her story.

Swaydi’s old friend got a very well paid job in the pub. And she was so curious, so she went over to find out what exactly his job is. It turned out that he was a tour guide of a mercenary group to search for the treasure of the legendary Captain William Gent.

The job is paid up to three gold coins. If they find the treasure hunting ends successful, he could get a huge reward. Of course, there are some risks.

Of course, Fowls wasn’t paying attention to the meager profits of the three gold coins, although it counted as a small fortune for his current status, "What is your friend’s name? How come he told you this kind of information?"

Usually, treasure hunt is a mission that best kept as a secret. If that person got hired to be a guide in the mission, he must have been noticed of some kind of non-disclosure agreement.

Swaydi hesitated a while and her cheeks got reddened. According to her description, her old friend - Wood - was the son of her neighbor. Wood was one year older than her, and they grew up together as closest friends.

For a couple of young boy and girl that grew up together and still share secrets as grown ups, they must have feelings for each other....

Swaydi didn’t admit that. But Fowls somehow figured it out.

Fowls started to lose interest in teasing this woman. Getting her from another man didn’t seem fun to him.

"Oops, I forgot! This is a secret! Master Fowls, you must not ... must not tell anyone else!" Swaydi finally realized and she almost screamed out.

"No, I won’t, relax." Fowls comforted the girl. He would keep such good information to himself, no doubt. And also he shall never tell this woman anything confidential.

She could be naïve, but how could she be so careless? Fowls wasn’t even asking trick questions and she spilled everything out. Fowls started to have concerns about his servant.

"Wait, what did you say about Captain William Gent, and his treasures? What is going on?" Fowls’ body owner cared nothing about non-magic stuff, so Fowls searched his memory and got nothing about this name.

Even the name "Wood", Swaydi mentioned several times to her employer in the past, yet he had no impressions at all. If weren’t the new Fowls, who was able to exam through the host’s memory in details, anyone took possession of the old Fowls would be limited to magic study, which was only the lowest level of basic magic...

Captain William Gent, a person who lived on the ocean - a pirate.

About two to three hundred years ago, the East Sea Federal Navy hired William Gent to wipe out the pirates within the East Sea area. However during that time, he took few into custody. And after several years, he himself turned into a pirate.

Using the old relationship with the Navy, William took over more and more pirate tribes to enhance his troops. He once had thousands of soldiers, including dozens of water wizards. At that time, even the Navy couldn’t do anything about him. He was called "the Hurricane of the East Ocean."

When William Gent became a scary pirate and gathered a lot of wealth on the ocean, one incident made him the most well known captain. It was a day of year 1771 of Paweier's calendar; he and his troop robbed a fleet of Prince Olloops from the Bonaparte Empire. His trophies were worth about one billion gold coins.

This big pirate was later arrested and jailed in a federal conference with a country on a different continent, and then escorted back to the East Sea Union for trial. But until he died, no one had found out where the one billion gold coins worth treasure was hidden.

All people knew, was that he secretly handed his wife a balled up note before his execution. There were a few haikus and some numbers on that note. And later people found several treasure maps sketched by William Gent.

The existence of William’s treasure maps can be proved to be true by magic. But some of the maps were found in his relics, some were found in distant antique shops, and some were found in libraries. There always been people call for private fleets to hunt for the captain’s treasure, but no team had ever succeeded.

Whether the hints from the treasure maps were true, or whether the maps were really sketched by William, one thing was at least certain - the port city of Earendur, is the hometown of Captain William Gent. Before his pirate life, he once used his anonym and lived there. Most of his relics were also investigated there.

Also, many people can recall that when William Gent was a pirate, he seemed to be more tolerant to the Earendur people.

It’s hard to say that William did the port city much favor. Instead, with his arrest and execution, and with his life and whereabouts were revealed, fewer and fewer businessmen were willing to do business in Earendur. - Businessmen along the coast usually more or less hate the nearby pirates.

When people talk about Earendur, they never forget to mention "The Earendur where William Gent grew up."

Earendur is a medium-sized city on the mainland with a population of more than 200,000. The city has beautiful mountains and rivers; the harbors are large and quiet. It counts as a rarely good port on the east side of Paweier.

However, in the past few hundred years, the population had decreased slowly about ten times. And the level of the territory had been downgraded again and again. The standards of the gods temple, the wizard union and the landlord houses, were constantly lowered. So...this city became the qualified venue for the quiz of the Medici family heirs.

Pirate? Treasure? Mercenary group? Thanks to Swaydi’s story, Fowls felt inspired: he just got a clue for the profit required by his heir test!
