A System That Beats Death

Chapter 48 - Behemoth

Breaking through the surface of the water, a gigantic creature emerged. At 80 meters tall, each motion in the water caused enormous waves that considerably hastened the rate of erosion. Finally reaching the shore, it then started to drag its prey out of the water. The trail it left behind was conspicuous as the surface of the water was dyed red and teeming with confused sharks. The corpse of a partially gnawed blue whale left the ocean and entered land as the creature continued dragging it towards the feast it had prepared. Fifteen beached blue whales lay side by side, each with a gaping hole on their sides that leaked gallons of blood. Three blue whales had already been turned into skeletons along with various marine life caught in the crossfire. However, the creature would not relent and even a hundred tons of meat could not satisfy its unquenchable hunger.

Not enough! Not enough! Not enough! The creature screeched as it furiously and ravenously devoured the feast before it. The meat that could have fed an entire city for 5 years was finished in less than half a day. No one would dare to call this creature a glutton as it was not merely eating a lot of food. There were those that ate half a bowl and felt full and then there were those that ate five bowls and still felt that their appetite was not sated. This feast however was on an entirely different dimension altogether. The stench alone could induce one to vomit their guts out which would likely be eaten along with the feast as the creature had no taste buds to facilitate the overwhelming consumption.

The creature growled in frustration. The entire excursion had been a waste of its time. As expected, the blue whale did provide a lot of sustenance. However, it was quite lacking compared to some of the people it had eaten before. Regarding the person that had given it the most sustenance, even a thousand blue whales would not be enough to compete. The creature then began to reminisce.

Despite over a thousand years having passed, it had only evolved twice. However, the gap between before and after the two evolutions were quite significant. Currently, he was a behemoth which was a creature that could jog despite its hulking physique and staggering height. To an unaware bystander, he would look like a mountain capable of moving itself. When he had first entered this world, he was less than 20 meters tall but still considerably powerful. Feasting on the people which had been teeming throughout the lands was one of his favorite memories. He believed that they had belonged to a singular empire or something of the sort.

"I wonder if that Kingdom still exists", the creature stated in amus.e.m.e.nt. When he was 40 meters tall, he had been tempted to end all that remained of the Empire but the sentinels impeded him. As they were 50 meters and numbered in the hundreds, he was overwhelmed and had no choice but to leave. It was wasteful to expend his energy on the sentinels as they had no flesh or soul for him to devour and would continually regenerate. He had figured out that he could devour souls when doing so to a certain somewhat talented man with a sword. Unlike the spirits of his realm, it seemed that his spirit was unique to him and kept him afloat. Now that he had devoured it, he wondered what became of the man without a drive.

As he pondered this, two figures then appeared beside him and reported hastily as in the presence of this monstrosity, anyone but Atlas would want to leave as soon as possible.

"He is still alive and somehow has become even stronger"

"Interesting", the Behemoth said before revealing rows of unbelievably sharp teeth through a sinister smile. He might even pay the man a visit after trampling the Kingdom.

Hearing of Guren's exploits, Tianli swelled with pride. While worldly experts were expected to stay out of struggles between the masses, many actually stayed out of conflicts due to the fear of dying after achieving so much. Those aware of their limits know that every battle is a gamble and that their strength only mitigated the chances of being killed.

Those willing to face an entire army alone were numbered in the single-digits and Guren charged armies so often that people began to believe that it was a form of recreation for him. Talk of Guren had died down a bit in the Capital as he seemingly went on a hiatus but Tianli was convinced that it was only the calm before the storm.

Once again inspired, Tianli trained even harder. One advantage of being inducted was that he now had a small pocket dimension that was only accessible to him. It was large enough to be a warehouse and not needing to carry anything was a very liberating experience. It had been quite amusing when he pulled a sword out of nowhere on unsuspecting bandits.

Many times he had encountered dubious individuals roaming near raiders in a war zone. It had happened so often that he became curious. They were not bodyguards of the raiders as he doubted raiders could afford it and they wouldn't even intervene when the raiders were being slaughtered by other groups of raiders without their kind. Ambushing one of them, he had actually discovered they had a similar symbol to the one in the insignia but of inferior quality and without color.

Pursuing that clue had led him to the Capital which was also known as the Heart of the Empire. As the base of the spiritual underworld and legal underworld both resided in the Capital, Tianli couldn't help but suspect that the Empire was heavily corrupt. Why else would such depravity exist in the vicinity of the government?

After a month of covert investigation, he had confirmed something shocking but later realized that it seemed obvious at hindsight. The base of the spiritual underworld and the legal underworld not only resided in the Capital but also were the same entity. He had informed Guren of this and had intended to continue investigating but Guren told him to wait for his arrival.
