62 – Prom is politics (1)

During her time at the academy, Laura von Venner did not get along well with people for a cadet from a high-ranking aristocratic family.

If Lieutenant Colonel Jaeger heard this story, he would think:

‘Did he go alone because he is a character described as a genius in the novel, and there were no cadets of his level?’

However, the reason she went alone was actually because of the guys who had been flirting with her since the first grade.

After class, after studying with students belonging to the same study group to some extent, there were many people who begged to go to a cafe separately to drink coffee or to have a meal at a place with a good atmosphere near the academy.

So, Chigeundukdae was a girl who went to the academy completely alone for the purpose of cutting off contact with men at all.

Count Benner, who knew about her situation, called her a few days ago and advised her to be friendly here since the guys who came to the Staff College are verified people.

I was thinking about how to intervene among the people studying hard around me.

“Lieutenant Laura, if there is no next lecture, why not discuss with us based on what we just learned? At the desk over there on the left, I am analyzing the war in Czechia with the theories the professor taught me.”

The young captain, who invited her to participate in the debate, remembered that the oldest major in his group had warned her to bring her, and invited her again.

“Isn’t the lieutenant also looking for people to study with? If you tell us about your experiences in Visocia, we will also recommend many good lectures.”

Lieutenant Laura stared at the people gathered in the direction the captain pointed.

“The villages that were supposed to requisition food in Visochia just gave food to the lieutenant colonel who pretended to be a requisition officer. Why do you think that was the case?”

“Isn’t this possible because more than 20 soldiers threatened the villagers? Moreover, the official documents of Czech Republic, which were forged by the Empire, were also used, so…”

“In other words, our requisition system can be robbed with the same method.”

A study meeting to find in-depth analysis and alternatives worthy of an excellent officer at the College of Staff.

Lieutenant Laura thought that if she entered the Staff College, she would like to enter among such people and have discussions and exchange information together. Think of what you have learned.

“Can I come in too?”

“of course. I would appreciate it if you could share the experience of a lieutenant who participated in the entire Visocian war.”

When Lieutenant Laura entered the meeting, everyone quickly introduced themselves and asked questions.

“I just talked about the time when the lieutenant colonel requisitioned the enemy’s food in Visochia, but I couldn’t understand it just by looking at the report. How the hell did you break it?”

“After going to the village chief and showing him the forms for official documents, he naturally asked for it as if he were an ordinary conscript officer. After all, since officers and nobles are in charge of requisitioning, there was no way a serf or village chief would carelessly question it.”

“So you’re not threatening the villagers or forcibly taking them away?”

Laura, who had deep respect for Lieutenant Colonel Jaeger, responded triumphantly as if it were her job.

“That’s right. So, when I asked why he didn’t make threats, he said, ‘Wouldn’t it look more suspicious if a conscript officer who was acting on behalf of the principality threatened the serfs?’ you replied Even if I were in the position of the village chief, requisition would be natural, but if I were to issue the order as if threatening, I would have been suspicious even if I had brought the order.”

“Indeed, it is. Just making a threat can make you look suspicious.”

“But even if he made threats, there would be no worries about being attacked in the opposite way, since only serfs live there anyway. Was there another reason?”

Those in the group had already admitted that the lieutenant had said, ‘It is best to act naturally to avoid any doubt’.

This is a question I asked because I was educated in an indoctrinated way to consider numerous variables in war.

However, it is normal to be embarrassed if you ask another question when you have already given a clear answer.

“Threats made you more likely to be suspicious, but you said that if you were resisted by the villagers, you would waste your time. He said that he had enough strength, including 12 knights and wizards, so there would be no reverse, but he said that fighting the serfs would consume a lot of stamina and time, reducing operational efficiency.”

“Well, they even mobilized knights on horseback, so if a battle breaks out, if you step on a few as an example, they will be subdued in an instant. It will be late and exhausting.”

“If I go further and steal only the food to be requisitioned, the enemy’s morale, which I learned later, will go down indefinitely. He also said that if they find out that the villagers died while resisting, the Czech Republic army will become enraged and their will to fight will become stronger.”

Lieutenant Laura and the other students at the Staff College are just using honorifics and casual language.

In fact, despite the situation in which they learned one-sidedly from Lieutenant Laura, they quietly wrote down valuable practical experience and reasons on the bundle of papers they brought with them.

That’s how they spent more than a few hours discussing the war in Czechia in an empty classroom, researching better tactics.

Even though they couldn’t be friends because of the difference in age and class, a sense of intimacy was formed as colleagues belonging to the same group before they knew it.

As soon as the last bell announcing the end of today’s class rang, everyone stood up and the major, the representative of the group, said with a smile.

“I was very envious after hearing the lieutenant’s story. Haven’t you met a really good boss? I was young, but I was able to see and learn next to someone who had a lot more to learn than that.”

To that, Laura replied with a bright smile as if she had been praised.

“I think so too. As I continue my military life, serving with the lieutenant colonel will be the best experience.”

When she praised the lieutenant colonel this way, to the major and other members of the group, she looked like a girl in love.

In the past, when I was a bachelor cadet at the academy, I would have been annoyed if the pretty girl in front of me showed me such an appearance.

They were married men and fathers who had already married a woman by family or met at a social church, so her appearance just seemed cute.

The head of the group, Major Findolph, made a big decision and decided to help the girl.

“By the way, won’t our professor get married soon too? Before, as an orphan with a commoner status, he probably had no friends, let alone women who approached him. It’s different now. Aren’t you a baron who, at the age of 21, was given a professorship at the Staff College, a lieutenant colonel, and even a manor?”

When Laura heard that, she was dazed for a moment, but the rest of the members noticed the major’s intention and spoke.

“Considering that I got married after being introduced to a woman by my family in the first year of my so-called sweet life, I am rather late in terms of age.”

“Isn’t it normal to get married after being introduced to Lieutenant Dal? You’ve been hanging out with a girl you fell in love with at first sight at a social club since your fourth year at the academy, and your father caught you…”

“I heard this because my father was the head of the General Staff Headquarters, but I heard that there were quite a few families that predicted the professor when the social church was held after the Rhineland War. He said that he had to stay because he couldn’t attend because the professor was ill.”

Now Laura’s face hardened and became serious, unable to hide her true intentions.

Because instead of having another woman standing next to the lieutenant colonel he admires and teaching him strategy and tactics when the job is done.

Because the thought of spending time with her gave me a very unpleasant feeling of tightness in my chest.

“Ha, but… Lieutenant Colonel doesn’t have much interest in talking to women outside of work.”

Major Findolph made his decision thinking of a girl who was studying with him and a girl about the age of his niece’s daughter.

Although, it wasn’t without plans that the girl, who was helped by their advice, wanted to share more of the knowledge and experience she had learned so far as the lieutenant colonel’s adjutant.

“I’ve been an officer for more than 10 years, and the younger the officer who hasn’t experienced women like that, the more he can’t win against the women approaching him at social clubs. A few of my friends got married like that, like roasting beans over lightning.”

Having said that, Major Pindolf and the other officers suddenly remembered their urgent business and left.

Meanwhile, fear and impatience came to Laura, who was left alone, at the thought that another woman might take over Lieutenant Colonel Jaeger.

Meanwhile, the office of Count Benner, head of the Operations Department at the General Staff Headquarters.

“I’m sorry for calling you at this time when you must have been having a hard time with class all day.”

“no. Thank you for making time for me while you are busy with your official duties.”

Usually, this is a formality, but if you are the head of the operations department, working overtime 5 days a week is a daily routine.

So never say anything empty.

“His Highness, the Crown Prince, has something to tell you. Are you properly preparing for social gatherings?”
