36 – The Rat Slayer

The Rat Slayer

Leaving the guild, Rai roamed the streets looking for a passage leading to the sewers.

Seeing what he was doing, Cindy whispered to Zeroa as she pulled up her skinny rucksack because it contained nothing.

“That man… What is he doing?”

“Well, I don’t know.”

If you don’t know, at least say something! It was Cindy who wanted to shout, but she, a porter who couldn’t get involved in the party’s decisions, shut her mouth. No matter how you look at it, Rai didn’t feel like he was looking for her passage.

She was already walking all over Legandia, passing through dozens of aisles. From the small barrel he made for sewage management to the passageway that even wagons could pass through, he just checked and passed by.

After wandering around for a long time, Rai stops at an aisle and asks Aslan to open it.

As the entrance is made of iron, it is usually only possible to open the passage with three bindings, but as soon as Rai tells him to open it, Asran effortlessly lifts the passage with one hand as if pulling it out.

Cindy opens her eyes wide at the brute force, but Rai and Zeroa don’t mind and go inside.

“Wow- I’m going through the smell. How much do you poop?”

She is wearing a makeshift mask made of cloth, but when Rai mumbles at the smell penetrating her inside, Cindy sticks to Zeroa again and whispers.

“Is that person really an academy instructor? Not an impersonation?”

“Yes.. That’s right. I also talk to the head of the academy.”

Judging from her actions, she answers in an unsure tone, saying that even Zero can not be trusted.

As Cindy tilts her head and goes inside the dark sewer, Rai lights it up with magic and sits in a chair borrowed from a nearby store.

Even Lay, who can lie down anywhere, can’t stand the bottom of a sewer.

“Do I need…?”

Cindy asks her carefully and her rai looks at her strangely.

The porter’s role is to store the party’s belongings, bring them out when needed, and help collect by-products from monsters.

“Why? Do you want to go back because it stinks?”

“No, I’m not talking about that. You don’t need that… Luggage.”

Cindy, who can’t bear to say that it’s a request like this, replies that she won’t be needed as a porter because it’s enough for a request like this, but Rai doesn’t understand.

“I need it because it will come soon.”

This time, Cindy doesn’t understand her and tilts her head, so Rai adds her words.

“Even if the hunting evidence is a rat tail, 2,000 is a lot.”

“……”

This man really intends to catch 2,000. Lai draws a magic circle on the floor, leaving Cindy alone who doesn’t understand where this incredible confidence comes from.

Athran and Zeroa, not being told what to do, pay attention to the magic circle he draws.

“Emotion control, anger…And what else?”

“Seduction? It seems that there is also temptation. And protection?”

When Aslan, who lacks in studying the magic circle, asks, even if she is zero, she tells only what she has found out. Although the grades weren’t good, the magic circle Rai drew was so complicated that the two academy students couldn’t read it.

When the splendid-looking magic circle is completed, Lai brings a chair to the center and sits down.

“Cindy, come here.”

“Yes? Yes.”

When Rai calls, Cindy, walking carefully so as not to step on the magic circle, stands by him.

As she approaches, Rai infuses her mana and activates her magic circle. The magic circle filled with soft blue light only made a humming sound, but nothing changed.

“What?”

“What is it? It’s coming soon, so go hunting.”

At Asran’s question, Rai pointed to the dark side with the tip of his chin. Asran noticed that something was coming as he said, and turned his gaze beyond the darkness.

Zeroa immediately raised her sword and shield and took a stance, followed by a translucent shield over the magic circle.

When the two of them looked across the street and looked back, they saw Rai sitting comfortably inside the shield and Cindy looking around, not knowing why.

“Hunt hard.”

“Hey! You despicable human!”

Athlan shouts in anger at Rai’s bright smile, but he comes back leisurely and slumps down on a chair, sucking on the drink he bought.

– Squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak squeak!!

From beyond the darkness, a number of rats that can be called an army are coming. One or two rats would be ridiculed, but hundreds or thousands of them are like a huge wave, creating a sense of fear.

Aslan, who was trying to grab the club called the great sword by passing his hand behind his back, changed his mind and gathered mana in his hand.

Every time he swings her hand, mana spurts out in all directions, sweeping away dozens of rats. Seeing Aslan’s response, Zeroa swung a mana-infused shield to exterminate her rats.

“Good, good. You didn’t waste your time at the academy.”

“Damn human! You fight too!”

“I’m so tired of playing magic circles that I can’t fight~”

With Cindy sitting next to him, Rai, wearing a shoulder strap, speaks sarcasticly.

Angry but unable to afford it, Aslan messes with his hand again. No matter how much you attack, the rat army that doesn’t seem to be reduced is coming from the other side of the darkness.

Cindy, frozen at the horror-inducing sight, looks at Rai after watching the two fight like heroes.

“What the hell happened? Why, why are there so many rats…”

“Because we summoned it with magic. From their point of view, we’ll probably look like the most delicious food in the world. They’ll mix it with frenzy, so they won’t even care about their own bodies.”

As he said, the mouse was crazy. The ferocity of attacking the two people who were blocking them without hesitation was more than a monster. The madness of not just one, but an endless number of rats was a horrifying sight.

However, at the carefree explanation as if there was no danger at all, Cindy looks at the two fighting men and Rai face to face with a devastated expression and says in surprise.

“What if the rat goes somewhere else?”

No matter how delicious things are here, if there are countless mice moving around, there will always be guys who leak by the sideways. If a ferocious rat goes out to the city, it is sure to turn into a big incident.

In response to Cindy’s urgent question, Rai sucks up the almost finished drink and says,

“So you blocked it while walking around. Did you walk around hurting your feet for no reason?”

Cindy, hearing why he wandered around the city aimlessly, looks at him with a blank expression.

Although she is a porter, Cindy can use magic, albeit clumsily. She didn’t feel that Rai was using magic at all, and even if she did, she just passed by, and she couldn’t understand how he blocked dozens of passages.

Unable to doubt Rai’s ability to drive countless mice into a frenzy at once, she turns her eyes to the two fighting, thinking that she should just put aside her incomprehensible work.

Unlike the laid-back side, the two were fierce.

It may sound funny to say that you are fierce with rats, but when you see this scene, your smile disappears. The rats that were so many that they gave up counting became a wave and became a huge monster, and like trolls that quickly recover even after cutting and cutting, the holes are quickly filled.

Whenever they are outnumbered and endangered, Rai fires a small orb-like spell.

A small and pretty marble that looks like a child is playing with it, and blows away hundreds of rats with a huge explosion. Of course, it is refilled, but the frenzied march of the rats is stopped for a while by its power.

“You can fight!”

“Nene- I gather and shoot. It’s hard, so I can’t use it a lot.”

Aslan shouts, but Rai says he can’t fight, forgetting even the snacks.

The inside of the protective shield, which even blocked the nasty smell of the sewer, felt comfortable even for a dizzy Cindy, whether the humidity or temperature was controlled. She offers her snacks, but Lai, who is rejected by her, eats the cookies alone, and by the time he finishes the rats stop.

Asran, who is not injured but leans her shoulder against the wall from exhaustion, and Zeroa, who is kneeling on one knee and breathing heavily, looks at the sight they have created with blank eyes, as if they have no strength to move anymore.

Thanks to Rai who carefully took care of the rats that were swept away with magic, a mountain of huge corpses was standing in front of them blocking the sewer.

“Excellent, excellent. With this great ball, I grant you the title of Rat Slayer.”

“I don’t need it.”

Rai, who came out of the protective shield, clapped her hands and praised her, but Aslan cursed at her with a tired face. Giggling and casting a healing spell on them, Rai stands in front of the mountain of rat corpses and looks up, then turns around and sees Cindy.

“How do I move this?”

He boasted that he would catch 2,000, but he didn’t think about what to do with it.

I can’t just leave a mountain of corpses that are big enough to block the huge passageway, the sewer. Aside from blocking the flow of water, if a corpse of this size is left unattended, various problems such as contagious diseases and evil spirits will arise.

“I’ll ask the management office…”

Cindy, disgusted by the sight, climbs the ladder in a weak voice.

No one believed Cindy when she said she was calling for manpower because she had killed too many rats. An official who thought it was nonsense came to the sewer and saw the disaster, opened his mouth wide, and asked for help, and people flocked to him.

It was an unfamiliar sight for the citizens of Legandia to see a large number of people, including the guards, the support team, and the city management office, shoveling out rat corpses from the narrow passageway of the sewers.

“Wow- too many.”

“Did you hunt all that many rats? The adventurer’s guild did one thing.”

From noble mtl dot com

“That’s right, I’ll do it a long time ago. I said that I couldn’t live because of mice.”

“Still, it’s refreshing inside.”

As rat carcasses start to pile up in front of the sewer, each citizen says a word. However, as the endless rats begin to pile up a mountain, the citizens with weak stomachs leave their seats one by one, and the crowd quickly disappears.

While city officials moved the body away, Ryde sat at a nearby restaurant to fill his stomach. Sitting at an outdoor table where you can see the corpses piling up, Cindy had no appetite at the gruesome sight, but Aslan and Zeroa, who used a lot of stamina, ate eagerly.

Their hair, washed once with the washing magic, is wet, but Rai laughs as he sees the two of them hurriedly eating without paying attention.

“Hey, I’ll spend all the money for the rat as you eat.”

“Shut up, Ji did nothing.”

“Yes, I’m an intelligent person, so I don’t work hard.”

Aslan puts food in his mouth and curses. Thinking that the two of them deserved to eat, Cindy sees Rai giggling.

As he said, without Rai’s magic, he couldn’t have hunted a mouse this big. Even if you don’t know much about magic, you can know that the power that can be called a miracle that made an unrecognizable magic circle and thousands of rats go crazy at once is amazing.

An official in charge of city administration approaches the eating raige and informs them of the situation. He’s adventurous, but his attitude is polite, perhaps because he’s been told he’s an academy instructor.

“There are too many. I just counted them with one shovel, and that’s 12,000. Thank you for caring about the aesthetics of the city as an academy instructor. I’ve been having trouble with the guild because it didn’t solve the request. Maybe, the mayor. A commendation will come down through the guild.”

“A- What? I did it because it was a request.”

Rai waves his hand, reacts with a fuss, and gets up. If it’s still not enough, she takes a piece of bread and puts it in her mouth. Aslan follows, followed by Zeroa and Cindy.

Kraosa shouts loudly as she opens the door to the guild and enters.

“Welcome the return of the Rat Slayer!”

Aslan frowned at the embarrassing tinnitus, but Zeroa laughed and bowed her head in all directions.

The guild reported that it had already wiped out 10,000 rats. Even from the guild’s point of view, no matter how many requests came, the adventurers wouldn’t take on the request, so it was a concern, but it was handled to such an extent that the rat wasn’t even mentioned for the time being, so I was happy.

The hunting evidence has already been reported by the management office, so the receptionist will refund it right away.

1 Gold 20 silver. It was more money than the laborer who worked for a month, but Aslan, who grew up in a wealthy aristocratic family, had suffered, but he looked disappointed when he received only this.

“Originally, it’s a feat worth going up to D1, but you need a promotion test to go from E to D. The next promotion test is scheduled in two weeks. Would you like to apply?”

“No, I’m fine.”

When Lai, who doesn’t need to raise the level to enter the dungeon, refuses, the receptionist nods with a regretful expression.

Rai, who gave Cindy all the money he received as a reward, asks her to prepare for the dungeon with the money.

“What floor do you plan to go to?”

When Cindy, who has to decide on supplies according to the difficulty or duration of the exploration, asks, Rai answers.

“The 40th floor.”

“… In three days?”

“Why do you think you can’t?”

Rai’s confident smile made Cindy shut her mouth.

The opponent was a man who boasted that he would catch 2,000 fish and far exceeded that goal. He might do it if he does.

Cindy moved to prepare the items, remembering Kraosa’s words of admiration as soon as she saw them.
