Entering the City Gates (2)

Unexpectedly, unlike other people, the white light cast on her entire body by the white marble column flashed, then dimmed. The next instant, an old man in a yellow shirt appeared out of thin air.

“Little friend, are you from another world?”

Zheng Wan smiled and said graciously, “Yes.”

“People from other worlds need to apply for a pass at the Department of Realms.”

“Department of Realms?”

Zheng Wan had no recollection of Cui Wang encountering such a situation when he came here. “Where is the Department of Realms?”

“It’s right over there.”

The yellow-shirted old man pointed to a spot about a hundred metres to the side, and only then did Zheng Wan realize that there was actually a small door along the city wall, a hundred metres away. She then heard the man add, “You just have to pay a hundred Yuan beads.”

On the other hand, Zheng Zhai, Madam Wang and Li Jin who were lining up to enter the city had already successfully passed through the city gates. Zheng Wan signalled for them to wait, then went straight to the so-called Department of Realms.

A hundred Yuan beads…

She didn’t have that.

A long-faced, thin woman was in charge of things at the Department of Realms. When she saw Zheng Wan taking all the gold, silver and jade accessories off her body and piling them onto the table, she said, deadpan, “We do not accept mortal items.”

“But——”

Zheng Wan squeezed the edges of her clothes helplessly, her cheeks already crimson. She had never experienced the feeling of not having enough in her pocket. Right now… she only felt that both her cheeks were alarmingly hot.

“No Yuan beads, no entry into the city.”

Seeing her red-faced silence, the long-faced custodian’s heart softened. This girl looked about sixteen years of age; she was still a child.  “If you know of anyone, you can get them to pay on your behalf.”

There was a flicker in Zheng Wan’s expression. One of the two people came to mind—one was Liu Yi, whose teeth were gritted with hatred for her, and the other…

She asked cautiously,

“This, this…”

“Zhenren.”

“This Zhenren, may I ask if you know Cui Wang?

“Cui Wang, who is Cui Wang?” The long-faced woman shook her head, “I don’t know him.”

Zheng Wan racked her brains and thought again.

“It’s, it’s Li, Li Wei—”

“—Li Wei Zhenjun?” The custodian’s voice rose; she realised her faux pas when she saw the surprise in the other party’s eyes and suppressed her voice, “How are you related to the Zhenjun?”

Zheng Wan pursed up her lips and smiled bashfully.

“I’m Zhenjun’s fiancée.”

Ex, that is.

The long-faced woman’s face was long to begin with; when she heard Zheng Wan’s words, her face grew even longer. She cast a glance over at Zheng Wan. She was indeed good-looking, it’s just that she was just like those young female cultivators who loved to daydream.

“Ever since Li Wei Zhenjun reached the top of the Savant Stage’s Boundless Ranking this year, do you know how many female cultivators in our realm are wishing to have a fling with him, and how many female cultivators are hoping to marry and practice dual cultivation with him?”

Zheng Wan shook her head.

“I don’t.”

In the book, there were indeed countless.

“How do you, a mere cultivator in the Gateway stage, dare to make such a wild claim that you are the Zhenjun’s fiancée? Who in the Heavenly Realms doesn’t know that Li Wei Zhenjun practices the Way of Impassiveness? Even the sect leader of Beimian Sect was turned down when he proposed a marriage to his daughter…”

Zheng Wan hung her head as she listened to Li Wei Zhenjun’s ardent supporter’s rebuke. Only when it was over did she raise her head and say in an aggrieved manner, “Senior, I— I’m not lying.”

“You——”

The long-faced woman was about to give her another lecture, but she saw the young cultivator grab something out of thin air, and a hand mirror suddenly appeared in front of her. Blushing, the young cultivator seemed to summon up her courage and said, “Senior, take a look.”

In the mirror, there was actually an image of a couple in wedding attire, a newlyweds’ bedchamber, a pair of dragon and phoenix candles; the couple was in the midst of bowing to each other.

There were a multitude of skills and techniques in the cultivation world, and a technique of this level wasn’t rare. Yet—the long-faced woman looked her over again and again; one who just entered the Gateway stage would not be able to execute such an illusion. Moreover, this was a Puppet Mirror…

When the man in the groom’s robes straightened, the long-faced woman exclaimed.

“Li Wei Zhenjun?!”

Who in all the Heavenly Realms didn’t know what Liwei Zhenjun looked like? He was the most elegant and handsome; one who was as vivid as the rising sun and as clear as the bright moon, truly…

However, this looked like a wedding of the mortal realm.

Zheng Wan blushed, “Senior, my cultivation base is very weak at the moment. This Puppet Mirror can only reproduce what has happened before. What—what I said earlier wasn’t wrong. I was originally Li Wei Zhenjun’s fiancée, and we had gone through the rites in private, it’s just that afterwards, he got annoyed with me, and this matter… was just left unsettled.”

“I’ve come now to this realm precisely to seek him.” She clasped her hands together. “Can you make an exception, please?”

The long-faced woman looked at the young cultivator’s slightly red pretty face—she did indeed look like those female cultivators who were obsessed with love. But when she thought about the rumours of how aloof and inhuman Li Wei Zhenjin was, she couldn’t help but feel somewhat sorry for her.

Presently, her heart had actually believed most of it.

“If you have any magical items or drinking dew, they can serve as a replacement.”

At the mention of this, the cherry dew Cui Wang gave her in the transient realm came to Zheng Wan’s mind. One drop was enough for a Gateway stage cultivator to train for three days; she did not bear to use it in the mortal realm.
