After School Tuition Centre

Chapter 70 - Boring

The trend of students from any age, gender or race attending tuition classes are now a big craze among parents and students in our country due to the highly competitive school environment that we as students are living in right now. To understand the reason tuition classes are becoming a rising star within the education world, we must first understand what a tuition centre is. No one can pinpoint the true definition of a tuition centre as it is a term widely used and unique in Malaysians, Singaporeans and Indonesians while the rest of the world had their own unique term for a tuition centre, but the concept of going to a tuition centre to continue learning the same syllabus that was set by the education minister after school is still the same. Every day after school, students would flock tuitions centres round the country to attend their classes until the sun goes down and the moon takes her place up into the black sky together with the sparkling jewel-like stars. Why do students have to continue working hard after their classes are over? The answer is one very simple word that is 'future', yes for their future, every student must study till late night even if they don't like it, but in turn, they might be harming their bodies in exchange for knowledge. So, should we agree or disagree with the tuition class trend?

As the Chinese concept of Yin and Yang states how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another, tuition classes also have their pros and cons not only towards the students who are their clients, but also to the parents and teachers working there as a part-time job. Everyone has their own views on the subject on hand including me. Some might view this matter in a positive light while others will scorn at the idea of tuition classes.

To start off this discussion, tuition classes bring a lot of benefits to students. Students who attended tuition classes usually understand the subject that was taught by their tuition teacher better than their peers who doesn't attend tuition, this had been proven by experience first hand from many students including myself, the reason is a teacher must rush through the syllabus to meet exams deadlines while tuition teacher does not have that kind of pressure on them to complete everything as soon as possible, so they can take their time and explain every single detail of the subject. On the other hand, there are some teachers that don't really care to make sure every student in his or her class understands the subject on hand and this is where tuition classes come in handy, to help the weaker students to not be left in the dust by their peers.

To continue the discussion, tuition classes also helped some teachers to earn additional income to support their family when the times are tough back in the old days, but now the money earned from teaching at tuition centres are mostly invested in the teacher's personal hobby as the income gained from the teaching profession had increased in the past decade. Not all teachers held tuition classes to earn some extra cash. Some of them actually have the passion to spread knowledge that they have to others to ensure the wellbeing of the future generation and the livelihood of the subject that they are teaching, for example, the Chinese and Tamil language subjects.

As I had mentioned at the start, the world isn't only all-white, tuition classes also have their downsides just like a coin which has two faces. The most obvious downside that every who love to point out when discussing tuition classes is the fact that the classes are placing a great deal of stress on the students not only mentally, but also physically. How so you might ask, let us take an example, some students have to attend tuition classes as soon as the final bell had rung, without any other choice at hand they rushed to the various tuition centres that they attended, some of the lucky ones have the chance to have their lunch on the go while the unlucky ones must starve until class ended, after they finally got home, a place where one could rest, they must still continue working on the exercises that their tuition teacher gave them or they might be punished. These are only some of the various bitter examples that had occurred throughout the years on the students of Malaysia. All of these stresses in addition to students not having much time to release them will most often lead to self-harming or in worst cases suicide, news about students not being to take the pressure are constantly appearing on every media platform and the numbers are rising at a horrifying rate, especially when it is getting closer to the big three exams of our country which are SPM, PT3 and UPSR. Students are human beings and most of them are still young, yet parents force them to partake in tuition classes which pressure them onto a bleak path.

As my final point on this subject, tuition classes are also bringing harm to other parties which included the parents and teachers. When a teacher teaches tuition, he or she is usually forced to split their precious attention away not only from their students at school but away from their children at home. Some tuition centres continue their business until ten o'clock at night and on weekends to earn those few extra bucks, this causes the children of the teacher mentioned to be neglected by his or her parents and this causes a lot of damage to their fragile minds especially if they are still young. A child that grows up with barely any love from the parents is usually the ones who would cause the most problems, yet it is not their fault. Other than that, the parents of the students who need to send their children to tuition centres not only have to sacrifice a portion of their income but a portion of their time. For example, you need to go to Tuition Centre A from school. Who is going to send you there? Of course, it is going to be your parents, some parents who had more than one child have to spend countless hours on the road just to send them there not to mention the exorbitant fees that the tuition centres charge every month.

It is an undeniable fact that tuition classes do help weaker students to excel in their studies, while the cons of tuition classes are just as numerous or even more than the pros it is a fact that tuition classes have become a necessity if you want to succeed in the future as the world is progressing forward at a rapid pace.
