Chapter 44 - Silverlight

Silence remained between the two; Summer's light trembling slowly disappeared the longer Arthur stroked her back. Taking a deep breath, Summer raised her head from her knees, now resting her chin atop them, quietly watching the clouds pass bye in the blue sky, her eyes red and puffy, tear trails running down her cheeks.

After a few minutes of silence Summer closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "It… was, things got better, we got better" she said, mostly to herself as a form of reassurance. Taking another deep breath Summer began to straighten her back, to which Arthur removed his hand, placing it on the egg.

"I haven't cried like that in years…" she mumbled, wiping her eyes with her cloak "Thank you, Arthur…" she said turning her head to Arthur with a light but sad smile.

"I didn't do anything, I just listened." Arthur replied with a small smile of his own.

"That's more than enough" she quietly responded.

"Summer, don't blame yourself" Arthur suddenly said "Never, blame yourself…" he muttered, his voice sad and melancholic.

"Hmm?" Summer tilted her head in confusion about to say something but was stopped as Arthur suddenly stood up and said "We should get this to my room, it's surprisingly heavy" not turning around to look at her when he spoke as he walked away.

"Arthur?" Summer muttered

"So… what do I do with this…" Arthur muttered staring at the Grimm egg sitting atop one of his pillows that was placed atop his coffee table.

"Sit on it?" Summer responded, sounding more like a question, due to her lack of information and knowhow of hatching eggs.

"…" Arthur blankly stared at Summer "Helpful, Really" The Sarcasm was palpable. "Though I suppose keeping it warm would be the first thing to do. Any ideas?" he asked, turning his head to Summer, only to panic when he saw her wearing a welding mask and holding a flip lighter in her hand along with some type of accelerant. "No!" he screamed tossing his hand out and quickly taking the lighter away from her "No Fire!" to which Summer crossed her arms and began pouting.

'And, she's also a pyromaniac… great…' Arthur commented in his head.

"I am not!" Summer retorted sounding offended

"I didn't even say anything!"

"You thought it! Don't lie! My Summer senses were tingling!" she responded

"I thought you had mother senses?" he commented

"They're one and the same." She concluded getting an "Ohhhh" from Arthur.

"Does a Grimm egg even need to be heated?" he asked turning his head back to the egg which now had a constant dim red vein pattern to it which faded in and out every few seconds like a faint heartbeat.

"I don't think so? If it's like other Grimm, it shouldn't really be affected by cold or hot temperatures, maybe if we live in Atlas or Mistral we might need some way to het or cool it, so it should be fine here, I think?" she thought.

"Maybe just make a bed for it with a few blankets… I know!" she said, jumping up from the couch she had been sitting on next to Arthur. She quickly picked up egg and ran over to the corner of the room.

"Wait! Be careful!" Arthur desperately called out, unable to stop her from nearly falling after tripping herself over.

"Safe!" She shouted, having caught herself at the last second before falling over.

"Please be careful" Arthur whinned as he walked up to her side, snatching the egg from her hands to protect it "Now, what did you think of?" he asked now that his arms were wrapped around the dully glowing egg.

"Right!" she said quickly turning around and running to the side of the giant teddy bear that occupied an entire corner of Arthurs room "You have a giant bed right here!" she said, slapping the stomach of the bear.

"…"

"What?" she questioned

"Really? Sir Fluffles was your great idea?" he blankly asked.

"That is a beautiful name" Summer commented "Yeahm it's not like you have a better idea. Do you?" she asked, not getting a response "Summer one, Arthur zero" she stated with a cheery tone.

"Now gimme" she said holding out her hands, doing a 'give me' gesture.

Arthur hesitated for a moment, letting out a sigh as he slowly held the egg out to her "Please be careful…"

"I'm always careful, thank you very much" she said, turning her head in defiance.

Arthur simply couldn't find the words as he nearly stumbled and shouted 'But you nearly dropped it not a minute ago!' in his head.

Turning to the giant teddy bear, Summer walked up to it and placed the egg atop its l.a.p. But quickly grabbed the egg as it began to slide in between its legs. Lifting the egg up again Summer began to look around the room for something that could keep it safe. Her eyes eventually landed on Arthur's bed, specifically on the crimson red duvet.

Walking up to the bed Summer grabbed the edge of the duvet and quickly pulled it off of the bed "This should work…" she muttered feeling the silky smooth fabric of the blanket. Walking back to the bear Summer threw the blanket over its legs, tucking the blanket under its legs to act as a makeshift sling, preventing them from opening.

"Now for the moment of truth" she slowly placed the egg into the centre of the blanket, it slowly began to sink into the blanket but eventually stopped once about a third of the egg had been buried in the blanket.

"And that's how you make a nest with a giant oversized teddy bear with a cute name and a blanket for a potentially man eating monster." She said dusting off her hands.

"Really motivating Summer" Arthur blankly replied

"You're welcome!" she happily replied, getting rolled eyes from Arthur in response.

"So… what now? It's too late for me to go to class, and dinner is in an hour." He asked "And no, no training, ms. Goodwitch has something planned and I would like to not be exhausted in the morning." He quickly added seeing Summer's 'Drill Sergeant' expression appearing on her face.

"Awww" she w.h.i.n.ed in response. But quickly changed her expression as she began looking around the room, her eyes wandering over his desk which had various weapon designs on it.

"You designing a weapon?" she asked, walking up to his desk, getting a closer look at the various half-finished sketches.

"Yeah, I can't freely use Cross, so I need something to use, and I'm not Yang, I'm not going to punch the grimm to death… undeath? Does a soulless thing die?" he murmured the last part of his sentence.

"Hmm… Maybe I can help you with designing something?" she offered

"You sure? Don't you have huntress stuff to do?" he inquired

"Nope" she popped the P "I'm retired, after… I got back, I just couldn't bring myself to continue." She answered, not willing to say anymore. "Now!" she shouted out, breaking the quiet atmosphere "What type of weapon you thinking of using?" she asked.

"Summer…" he muttered with a sigh. "Well, I don't want something heavy, not like Nora's hammer. But I also don't want something small like a dagger, so I'm thinking along the lines of a sword of some type."

"Any transformations in mind?" she questioned.

"Well, the obvious is a gun of some type, I don't think as large a calibre as Ruby's sniper. But other than that, give it a pole arm transformation." He suggested.

"Hmm, that's fine and all, just sounds a little boring." She responded as she began to mull over a few ideas, before a light bulb went off in her head "One second, I'll be right back" and she disappeared into a storm of red and white petals, causing Arthur to cover his eyes as papers went flying throughout his room.

"Goddammit…" he w.h.i.n.ed, seeing the dozens of sheets of paper lining the floor.

Just seconds later Summer reappeared, this time carrying in her hands two sleekly curved swords about the length of a forearm. Along the spine and near the hilt on each blade were three holes, each an equal distance from each other, hanging from the holes were small white rings two on one blade and one on the other. Its hilt curved slightly, it's pommel quillons to prevent the sword from slipping from your hand. Along the spine ran various interlocking plates, which each curved slightly inwards into the spines creating a semi-circular shape running down the blades spine. Each in a beautiful gleaming silver and black colouring.

"Here hold these" she said holding out the two swords to Arthur.

Arthur, picked up the two blades, holding them lightly in his hands, beginning to measure their weight as well as inspecting them, where he noticed a small button on the handle of one of the blades which wasn't on the other.

Taking a closer look at the two blades Arthur noticed that the spines of the blades were interlocking, putting the two blades together, they quickly connected with a snap, the rings along the spine of the blade began rotating until an opening appeared which then entered the empty holes of the sister blades, the handles soon also connected together and began to extend until it was as long as Arthurs arm making the combined length of the now singular blade nearly twice as long as his arm.

"A shortspear?" Arthur asked

"Yep, meet Silverlight…mk2" she muttered the last part "She was my weapon when I was still a huntress, she is a mixture between a .50 cal revolver, a short spear and two swords. Took me months to build, let alone get ammunition for. Who would have thought that getting .50 calibre rounds for a revolver would be uncommon."

"Isn't .50 cal a little overkill for a revolver?" Arthur questioned, actively avoiding pointing the blade at anything worth, anything really.

"Maybe, but it is only usable when combined, and at this point it's just a sniper." She mused "So yeah, ignore the revolver part, it's a sniper."

"It's quite a piece" Arthur muttered "I can see where Ruby gets her weapon fanaticism"

"Some things are just intrinsically in the Rose family blood, hell you should have seen my mother's weapon, she had a minigun and she strapped swords to each of the barrels and used it as a mace." Summer said with a chuckle.

"Remind me to never anger a Rose…" he said "Especially one in a forge" he added.

"So, what do you think?" she inquired.

"It's weight is about right, calibres on the 'fun' side of things, to say the least. Dual wielding is probably a little much for me to start learning, I'm not ambidextrous so that makes things complicated. But otherwise, a very cool weapon, and somehow appropriate" he commented.

"I know!" she excitedly responded.

Still trying to figure out what weapon to give Arthur. So give me ideas, everything is open. Even dual wielding, Arthur has a magic flying book that can give him stuff, somehow getting Ambidexterity is not that farfetched.
