Chapter 54 - Promise

"Silky!" Arthur heard a woman shout, turning his head he saw an aged woman in her early seventies, with silver hair and an extremely pale skin tone, paler even than Ruby's. And she was walking directly to them.

"Silky! Do you have any idea how long I have been looking for you!" Reprimanded, "You were supposed to be backing two hours ago! There were families that wanted to meet with you, their all gone now!" she nearly screamed as she came to the side of the table "This could have been your chance, do you know how difficult it was to find families that would want to meet with you?" she said in a softer, seemingly tired voice as her arms slumped to their sides.

"You know her?" Coco asked leaning over the table whispering into Arthur's ear. Arthur simply shrugged his shoulders in response. Feeling Fairy poking his arm he turned to her where she proceeded to point to herself and then to the woman and outlining of a house with her hands.

"Hey, I could have figured that out!" Arthur retorted, making the most displeased face he could must, causing Fairy to giggle in response at his unconvincing expression.

Giving a chuckle of his own Arthur turned to the old lady "Are you the headmistress of her orphanage?" he questioned, getting an 'Ooohhh' from Velvet, Coco and her mother, who indicated to her husband to put the shotgun down.

"Yes, yes, and you are?" she questioned "No, don't" but quickly put her hand up to stop him before he could say anything "We don't have time, Silky, we need to go, now. Someone came in at the last minute that was willing to wait until I found you, and I really don't want to keep him waiting, he said he was the butler for some big family back in Atlas that helps children with your type of ailments, and their looking to have a child of their own now." She explained "And their willing to take you in right now, so we need, to go"

Fairy, or Silky as she was now named, quickly shook her head to refuse her, then just as quickly pointed to herself and then to Arthur.

"Eh?" was the only thing Arthur and the woman could muster up while the other girls took a spit take at her obvious declaration.

"You want me to… adopt you?" Arthur pointed to himself in befuddlement

"You want him to adopt you?" The woman also question, just as befuddled

"Mmm" Silky hummed and nodded with a wide toothy smile that made her seemingly sparkle in the light.

The woman was the first to react "No! absolutely not! He is a child! Only a few years older than you! There is no way he can adopt you! Nor would I allow it!" she screamed, luckily, not attracting any gazes as the café closed particularly early in the day at around two while the patisserie only closed at six.

"I- oh Fairy…" Arthur said with a sad smile as he gave her a tight hug, "She's right, I can't, I couldn't. even if I wanted to, I have nothing, no money no house, nor a family that could take care of you while I'm busy at Beacon, I just couldn't take care of you the way you deserve, not in the long run." He admitted, tightening the hug even further as Fairy began to struggle and turn around in his grasp, wrapping her arms around his c.h.e.s.t, not willing to let him go.

Arthur let out a sad and heavy sigh, gently patting her back and turning to the others giving them a weak smile, which they also had. He then turned to the headmistress, seeing her chewing on her thumb and tapping her foot, trying to be as patient as she could but obviously not wanting to keep whoever the man was, waiting.

Arthur sighed again and began to move the plates and glasses that were on the table to the side, once they were pushed off to the side, Arthur attempted to pry Fairy off himself by picking her up by her armpits, her hand futilely gripping at his shirt, yet, her hands were still injured and unable to get anything remotely as close to a grasp on anything.

Arthur picked her up as she struggled trying to break from his grasp but quickly resorted to latching onto his arm when she couldn't escape, and sat her atop the table, his arm still being hugged by her.

"Let go" he said in a low voice.

"Nnn!" she hummed quickly shaking her head.

"Please, I just want to tell you something" he begged, a soft and weak voice "Please? Here, I'll even hold your hand" he said holding his hand out to her, which she looked at for a moment before looking to Arthur.

"mmm…" she hummed, relenting and letting go of his arm, but just as quickly throwing her own hands into Arthur's open palms, which he then closed, clenching to give her some sense of reassurance.

"Fairy…" he said looking into her eyes "I, cannot take care of you. I am not ready, I don't have anything for you" he said, feeling fairy attempting to break her hands free from his, opening her eyes wide as she realized she had fallen for Arthur's trap as he now had control of her arms.

"This family, even with the little I've heard, sound really good. I should know, I was almost adopted by a family just like them" he admitted with a sad smile, causing Fairy's as well as Coco and Velvet's eyes to open as wide as saucers. Fairy's struggling stopped as she looked into his eyes.

"You're an…" Velvet began

"Orphan, my mother died giving birth to me while my father died when I was eight." He quickly explained before returning his attention back to Fairy "You see, after my father died, I went to an orphanage where a few months after I arrived a couple arrived, they were entrepreneurs with a big and wealthy company and came looking for a child as the woman, the woman who would have become my mother, was infertile and unable to have a child of their own."

"And so they came to the orphanage searching for a baby, as they wanted to raise the child from its infancy. Yet, as if by fate, the moment they laid eyes on me and heard my story from the headmistress that they wanted me, not any of the younger kids they were originally there for, but me." He said clenching his hands tighter on Fairy's "But, I was a stubborn child, I refused and refused. Not wanting another family, even after everything I refused to accept that I was alone and had lost everything." His voice getting weaker and more downtrodden as he spoke

"Even then the woman, Alison and her husband, Eric came back, every single day for over a month, just spending a few hours with me, wearing down the walls I had built day by day, hour by hour and minute by minute. And it worked, as on my ninth birthday they held a birthday party for me. And you know what I did the moment I realized it was them that had done it?" he asked getting a shake from Fairy.

"I lunged into Alison's c.h.e.s.t, sobbing as I cried out 'Mommy!'" he made his voice as high pitched and childlike as he could "Her face lit up like a Christmas tree as she hugged me tightly, tears pouring from her eyes" his eyes now turning moist at the memories, "Yet, moments later, everything was shattered as a man they had fired from their business ran into the orphanage, shooting both of the dead in front of me." A single tear escaping his left eyes as he tilted his head to the side, while a gasp ran throughout the room as Arthur continued.

"You see, they had been intending to move to another country after they had adopted a child, me. And yet because of my reluctance they stayed, they were so dedicated to taking me, that they put everything aside just so they could keep visiting me." His voice cracking "I blame myself every single day for my hesitation, maybe had I been more trusting, more accepting that it never would have happened, we would have been in another country, away from anyone who may want to hurt us.

"Don't be like me Fairy…" he said "I can't care for you the way you need… you need a family like this, a family that can take care of you the way you need, a family with the means of potentially helping you fix your hands." He let go of her hands lifting them up slightly, lowering them again as he continued "And even if they aren't what you need or want, there will always be others, just like there was for me, there will always be a family out there searching for you."

"So, what do you say? Can you at least meet with these people? Just once, for me? And if they seem like the type of family I mean, accept them, don't push them away, can you do that for me?" he pleaded putting his hand on her cheek and holding his forehead against hers.

Fairy kept quiet unsure of how to respond, she wanted to stay with him, yet she knew he couldn't stay with her, no matter how much she didn't want it to be true. "…mmm" she reluctantly hummed, sniffing in the process, pulling his head back Arthur looked into her eyes once again "Thank you" he said pulling her into the tightest hug he could muster that wouldn't hurt her before letting her go but not before first grabbing her right hand and holding it up, as he brought his own right hand forward, wrapping his pinkie finger around her own,

"I, Arthur Fielder, promise to forever be there for Silky the Fairy, even if mountains separate us and the seas break our paths, I will always be there for you." He promised, tears now falling uncontrollably from his eyes, the same for Silky the Fairy, as she jumped into his c.h.e.s.t giving him one last hug, which he returned, tears pouring from his eyes as she wept. Just then a familiar golden glow appeared in front of him, which he quickly flicked away to deal with later.

"Now remember our promise" Arthur said kneeling on the ground outside of the Café "I will always be there for you, I have given ms. Nava my scroll number which she will pass on to the family, so you can just ask them to call me whenever you want." He said "And I mean it, I will happily flunk a few subjects if you want to talk" he admitted earning a chuckle from Coco, Velvet and Fairy.

"Mmm…" she said opening her arms for one last hug which Arthur happily obliged as he wrapped her in his arms picking her up and swinging her side to side causing her to giggle uncontrollably before he placed her feet back on the ground and whispered "No matter what, I will be there for you" giving her one final squeeze before releasing his hold and resting his forehead against hers.

"Come, we should go, we can't keep him waiting forever" Jazz said holding her hand out to Fairy.

"Goodbye Fairy, we will meet again, no matter the mountains or seas" Arthur muttered as he watched his Fairy disappear into the distance, his eyes catching one last glimpse of her eye as she turned her head around.

"Hey, Coco…" Arthur muttered

"Yeah?" she softly replied

"Which way to the clothing store?" he asked, attempting to keep his voice as normal as possible

"That way…" Coco pointed down the street to the right.

"Thanks" Arthur said as he remained standing for a moment, only turning once Fairy was out of sight, putting his hands in his pockets and beginning his trek to the store.

"Hey Arthur" Coco called out "What about your family after them?" she asked, having felt something was wrong with what Arthur had said to Fairy.

Arthur froze in his tracks for a moment, turning his head back to them he answered "There were no others" with a sad smile.
