Chapter 99 - The Hobby of Ice

"She looks angry" Ashe commented as she tilted the tome backwards to see Ruby and Winter standing atop the cliff, Ruby looking confused whilst Winter had a visible tick mark on her forehead.

"Ashe…" Arthur muttered suddenly feeling as if something had clicked into place, something he had noticed during his stress relief session in the forest coming to light, "What did you do" he gulped as Winter's eyes locked onto him, her arms crossed as she starred down at him.

Ashe began to awkwardly laugh, "I uh, may have forced her into a silencing contract by attacking her with hundreds of needles", she averted her eyes from Arthur, quickly shutting the Tome before flying herself back into his satchel.

"Really Ashe!? Really!?" Arthur was dumbstruck, sending one last glance to Ruby and Winter before making his way up the stairs on the cliff face.

"Let me just say this first" Arthur raised his hands in front of himself and began to explain, "I did not know she was going to do that" he tried to say, but his body quickly froze as a small white nevermore flew past his face, it's wing causing a small cut on his cheek.

"I do not take kindly to being unable to report to the general, now fix what you have done, I care not how it was done but fix it. Or I will bring you in for questioning" Winter unsheathed her rapier and got into her pose, her side pointing to Arthur whilst her left hand went behind her back, resting just above her h.i.p.s and her rapier pointing at Arthur.

"Wait! I didn't mean for that to happen!" Arthur began to take steps back away from Winter, his hands waving in front of him to show he was of no threat to her.

"It just sort of happened, the siren kissed me made a contract with me and then another contract was formed between me and you" he tried to reason.

"… you kissed another girl…" this single thought seemed to be the only thing Ruby picked up from the conversation, clearly remembering the almost model like for the Siren had with long dark green hair, bright green eyes, a sharp, alluring face and body proportions that would make even Yang doubt her feminine aspects.

"Not now Ruby! I'll make it up to you later okay!?" he quickly added, barely thinking his words over as he was panicking more about the extremely skilled specialist the seemed to slowly be getting more and more annoyed. Completely annoying the blush and smile Ruby had gained as she quickly began to nod in response, clearly her mind falling into a gutter.

If Arthur listened very carefully he could hear the almost laughter like cawing of a crow coming from one of the trees on the cliff face, 'One day Qrow, one day' Arthur grit his teeth as his war with Qrow seemed to have gotten to a new level.

"Then explain this 'contract' to me, what is it, and why am I unable to speak of anything that happened to the general" she asked, her voice almost monotone as she slowly began to calm down, remembering the task she had been given to get close to Arthur and search for information, her rapier lowering when she remembered this.

"Which one first" he asked, also calming down when he saw her rapier lower.

"Start with why I am unable to speak with the general about being assaulted by numerous golden lights"

"That, is because of the Silentum contract, the silencing contract, and once again I'm sorry about what Ashe did, she can be… 'evil' sometimes, I didn't even know she could force people into those contracts" he muttered scratching the back of his head, "Essentially, there are things about me that can be very dangerous to this world in the wrong hands, and those who know of these secrets of I prefer to have in these silencing contracts as a safety measure, silence is golden, the less people who know the better, and Ironwood is definitely someone I don't want getting anywhere near me"

"Basically, there is now a lock placed on you that prevents you from talking about certain things about me to anyone else that does not know" he said, whilst in his head he whispered to Ashe, 'Get the crow' causing Ashe to begin to laugh as she grabbed a controller and began to assault a certain crow hiding amongst the trees, leaving feathers as it was chased by dozen upon dozens of golden lights and needles.

Winter seemed to gain some understanding of what Arthur was saying as she nodded her head, "Essentially you are jamming the broadcast of information or in essence you act as a router where our intentions to release said information pass through and are censored depending on what is said" she astutely intuited pinching her chin in the process.

"That… is quite a magnificent feat, being able to halt the passing of information on a personal level, to the point where should the one who is 'contracted' will begin to feel intense pain at the mere thought of passing the information along even in writing, that could be an incredibly valuable asset for reconacence, should a scout be captured they become unable to disclose any s.e.n.s.i.t.i.v.e information of their assignment" she muttered, her eyes sparkling as she saw the worth of such an ability.

"And this contract? Are there any limits to the total contracted? And the process of making the contract, how does that work? It seemed to require the implant of some kind of chip, I inspected where I was implanted but I was unable to discover anything, almost as if there was nothing there, even that type of technology, being able to blend perfectly into the body would be an enormous asset to the military, if we could implant operatives with invisible, undetectable trackers we would never have to worry about losing sight or being unable to recover the bodies of our fallen compatriots" she listed off the possible value of such 'technology' completely ignoring the awkward smiles Ruby and Arthur had on now as they watched Winter fall into a world of her own.

"Um, Winter, I'm sorry to burst you're bubble, but it's not technology" Arthur began to explain, "The contract just requires a drop of blood, that's what the needles were for, they didn't have anything like a microchip in them. The contract is essentially connected to your soul" he tried to explain, but sweat dripped down his cheek when he saw something incredibly unusual for a Schnee, or at least the two Schnee's he knew personally, her eyes were sparkling.

"You have successfully understood the soul? Even become able to manipulate it? Something not even the researchers in Atlas have come to manipulate souls to such a fine degree, that is quite an exciting feat, I must say, the researchers would go wild should you meet with them"

"You seem to really be interested in souls" Arthur replied seeing her excitement at the topic.

Realizing she had let her demeanour shift slightly, Winter coughed into her hand and straightened her back, on hand on her hip whilst the other rested on the hilt of her now sheathed Rapier, "Yes, I would say so, my semblance is hereditary and I am particularly interested in how it works, in particular how those of my blood are capable of summoning our fallen foes, I have come to researching it in my free time finding that it is inextricably connected to the souls of the Schnee family"

"Though, one thing that baffles me is the restriction on us having to have personally defeated the foe, I have spent hours watching and researching the every movement of grimm I have never faced before as well as challenging simulations to get a better understanding of them, and yet I have come to a standstill in that department, so my only thought is that the actual experience is necessary, not just an understanding of the grimms physiology and attack patterns" she once again began to trail off, quickly catching herself before she went full nerd, "Ahem, I apologize, I get particularly excited about this topic and tend to trail off into a world of my own"

"It's fine, it's actually a really cute sightseeing the normally stoic specialist isn't just 'the perfect soldier'" he chuckled, getting a small smile from Winter in appreciation, but quickly returning it to her neutral, almost frown like expression.

"Though, I don't think your semblance has anything to do with the actual 'ecperience' of fighting a real grimm, more on the act of 'killing' the grimm" he added his own thought's to the equation whilst Ruby felt like she was getting smaller and smaller throughout their conversations, her eyes blank as she heard Winter rattling off her theories, her head tilting to the left and right ever few seconds in confusion.

"What do you mean by that?" Winter seemed particularly interested in Arthur's possible knowledge as he was the first person who had been capable of manipulating her, or well, anyones semblance that wasn't his own.

"When I fed the siren my aura she was already dissipating, and I noticed something, at the centre of her c.h.e.s.t, in her body there was a small black structure that stood out compared to the normal white colouration of your summoned grimm" he began to explain, "So I think it may be a possibility that your semblance isn't avatars but more recreations or 'rebirthing' the grimm using a part of the grimm collected after it is killed as a base and your semblance essentially build the body around that whilst the 'core' or 'heart' act as the programming, giving the summon a more 'grimm-like' movement" he theorized as he walked up to Winter, successfully entering into her world of theorizing the possibilities behind her semblance

"I am so confused…" Ruby began to wobble the various technical words coming from both them spinning around her head and putting her into a daze.

"That also explains as to why I have lost that Siren summon, I found it strange that after that incident I was only able to summon two of the three sirens, the summons being constructs built from a part of the grimm themselves explains that perfectly, as that 'core' did not return to me but instead remained in its changed form and followed you around, but what of this 'Pars' contract then? It said something about an 'unnamed, Grimm Siren'?" she questioned

"Well, I think you can still summon that Siren, just now in its changed form, Pars mean Part, so it's a partial contract, you have part of it while I have the other, though, actually summoning it I don't know, try using your glyph but only thinking about this siren" he suggested.

"Yes, let me" she muttered as a spinning glyph appeared next to her which she turned to, her mind flowing over a connection she had never seen before, her glyph beginning to spin faster a a grey mist burst from it, soon followed by the appearance of the siren in a familiar manner that they all seemed to have when summoned.

"It actually worked…" Winter stood the staring in interest at her new summon, feeling as if the grimm somehow seemed smarter than before its change, the siren quickly began to look around eventually locking eyes with Winter and Arthur causing it's expression to brighten as it began to swim around it.

"You should call it Siri, Siri the siren" Ashe chuckled as she floated next to a groaning Arthur.

"Real original Ashe, real original"
