Chapter 14: Against the Wind

In the morning Thomas gave me a briefing on the history and surroundings of the area.

In the afternoon he wanted to give me a more detailed explanation, and while we ate lunch…

Rattle, rattle, rattle….

The window panes began to rattle wildly and erratically.

A few minutes ago the sky was blue, but now stagnant clouds covered the sun.

Heavy rain began to fall on the shadowy land.

Then came the storm and the rumble of thunder.

“Well, that’s what happens when you start talking about it…”

“What a wind…”

As I walk to the study after lunch, I look out the hallway window.

It is dark in the shadow of the clouds, and the rain, falling diagonally in the wind, blocks my view.

The trees in front of the house, only dimly visible, sway as if they are about to be pulled up by their roots.

The higher the plant, the more it is affected by the wind.

If a tree is blown into the air and falls on a house, it would be a disaster.

A rock or piece of soil blown up by the wind can also damage and peel off a wall.

This is not ordinary rain.

People would certainly die if they went outside.

“Are the people in the house all right? Wasn’t Mr. Shun out there?”

“He is fine. He’s more sensitive to such changes than most people, and I’m sure he’s found refuge in a house somewhere by now.”

“Are you sure?”

“He’ll be fine. We’re used to it.”

Thomas said, walking toward the study.

He says so, but I’m worried, so I look out the window several times, stop, and walk after Thomas to make sure he doesn’t leave me behind.

I return to the study and continue the conversation.

We started with a review of what we had talked about that morning…

“Hey Amelia…”

“Eh, yes?”

“What’s bothering you so much? You’re so absent-minded.”

“I’m sorry.”

Like he said, I’m not listening.

I was so worried about what was going on out there that my head was full of worry.

“I know you’re worried, but he’s fine. Don’t even think about going outside to check on him, okay? Amelia would be blown away in a second.”

“I know. I’m not that reckless.”

“I hope not. Don’t worry about it. He can do magic, and worst case scenario, we can handle one person.”

“I see.”

So he can do magic.

Isn’t it rare these days to find someone who can do magic?

He’s a great guy.

But that doesn’t stop me from worrying.

“By the way, I can do magic now. I learned it when I came here.”

“Huh, I see.”

“You’re not reacting! You should be more surprised.”

“Well, no. I was still surprised when I learned that Thomas is now a Lord, so…”

At that moment, I was too surprised to be surprised.

But it’s great that you can do magic, isn’t it?

“Hahahaha…”

“Don’t kid yourself with that laugh. Anyway, don’t worry, he’ll be back tonight. But he’s probably soaking wet.”

“How, but if you can do magic, can’t you keep the rain off?”

“He can, but not always. If we run out of magic at a critical moment, it’s over. He and I both have magic, but it’s not inexhaustible.”

Magic isn’t all-powerful, either.

I know what it feels like to run out of magic, because Alchemy is a form of magic, and it needs magic to work.

When you run out of power, you can’t run properly.

With this kind storm, that could be the end…

“By the way, the building is protected by Magical Tools, right? What kind of Magical Tools are we talking about?”

“What kind?”

“There are two kinds of Magical Tools, aren’t there? One in which you directly infuse magic, and the other in which you store the magic generated.”

“The latter, of course. Not all people can handle magic.”

Yes, exactly…

I nodded my head in agreement and had a worry.

“What if the storm lasts too long? If the accumulated magic isn’t enough, the effect will wear off, right?”

“I know exactly what you mean. Exactly. So, for the worst case scenario, there’s a passage under the house that leads all the way here. So you can get out.”

“I see. So there’s no worst-case scenario.”

What’s the worst that can happen when people lose their lives even if there’s a way out?

It’s still dangerous.

Magical Tools are not all-powerful, and protection spells cannot protect against everything.

What happens if the Magic Tool is damaged and the power goes out?

Buildings also age over time, and there are many factors to consider.

“Is there anything I can do to…?”

“Amelia?”

“I was wondering if there is anything I can do with my ability.”

Is there nothing I can do with my ability, my Alchemy?

I was wondering if there’s anything I can contribute.

It is not a Magical Tool.

All I can do is combine substances and transform them into other substances.

Understanding the composition of matter, reshaping it to improve its strengths and balance its weaknesses…

“Yes. Maybe I can!”

Maybe there is something that Alchemy can do.

A thought occurs to me.

“Thomas, maybe we don’t have to rely on Magical Tools.”

“Really?”

“Yes, I will do it for you. I will build you a new wall that will withstand the wind and rain.”
