87 – Theater Festival (3)

If you don’t make mistakes, the judges will be amazed.

I nodded as if I agreed with Park Ha-joon’s words.

“If you make a mistake, the judges will be surprised in a different way.”

“Ah, you know that’s not what we want.”

I tried to joke once to relax a bit, but Park Ha-joon pouted out as if expressing dissatisfaction with me.

I couldn’t help but glared at him.

The person called the leader suddenly left me with such a heavy responsibility, and while running away, I wished for a lot.

Thanks to this situation, I can’t help but sigh.

It felt like everyone was implicitly expecting my words, so it felt like if I pretended not to know, the atmosphere would go down at once.

As I said before, I’ve never been on stage, so I don’t know how they feel right now. In the first place, because people full of personality gathered, everyone’s reaction was different.

Some people are nervous like Moo-sik Cha, who has no stage experience, and someone like Ha-joon Park is relaxed as usual.

What is the correct answer in the midst of such mixed reactions?

What… In fact, it seemed that there was no need to say the right answer.

No matter what I say, they are the ones who will do well once the play begins.

“Everyone is doing well anyway. Just do what you practiced.”

“… ….”

Could that be the end?

Looking at the expressions on their faces, everyone reacted roughly like this.

…… Know.

It won’t be fun if this is the end.

“If the words just weren’t very good, let’s try again in the finals.”

And.

All the members who listened to Seo Eun-woo had no choice but to smile lightly.

Because what he just said was the way he said he was already confirming going to the finals.

Korea Youth Theater Festival.

A festival hosted by the Korean Theater Association for young theater talents who are literally growing up.

Especially this year, it was a theater festival that received more attention than last year.

And at the center of it, of course, was the Hanbit Notice.

It is the only school in the same region where two teams participate at the same time, and one is a club that has been quite famous for a long time.

Theatrical department at Hanbit Arts High School.

Actually, this is a regular customer who often shows his face at the Korea Youth Theater Festival.

The finals are almost unconditional, and there was even a record of winning a gold medal at the Korea Youth Theater Festival last year.

And the scenario that won the gold award last year, that is, Kang Ye-rin, who is in charge of the script this time, said that she sharpened her sword and prepared for the competition with the goal of winning the grand prize.

Kang Ye-rin is already a famous prospect in this industry.

Most of the people involved in the Korean Theater Association knew her name, and in the related industry, she was evaluated as a next-generation writer who might fill the void of 927 writers.

Kang Ye-rin’s performance two days ago in the preliminaries was enough to impress the judges.

A more upgraded scenario than last year and directed perfectly without any mistakes under the leadership of Kang Ye-rin. In addition, the acting of the actors, who had a tremendous amount of practice, was harmonious, and the stage was unfolded beyond the student level.

So, according to the Korean Theater Association’s internal evaluation, advancing to the finals was already almost confirmed, and they confidently expected that if a play of this level was performed in the finals, the Hanbit Arts High School’s theater department would already receive the grand prize.

Just…….

“Finally… It’s the turn of the team the students are on.”

There was one team that made the judges nervous all at once with a completely different meaning.

A new club headed by popular actor Park Ha-jun, the theater and film department of Hanbit Arts High School.

The problem is that Park Ha-joon is not the only person to keep an eye on in this club.

Seol So-yeong, an actress who is currently receiving the most attention and popularity, has appeared as the main character in all the works of the author of 927.

Lee Da-hye, an incumbent idol who works as the center of Hong-ryeon and boasts great popularity just like Seol So-young.

It doesn’t make sense to have such a gorgeous lineup gathered in a high school club that the basic unit will break even if you just hear the name.

As such, from the standpoint of the judges, there was no choice but to expect what kind of play they would present, and on the other hand, there was something to think about.

The judging criteria for the Korea Youth Theater Festival is a method of giving a total score by adding 50% of the total score of directing and scenario and 50% of the acting score of the actors.

No matter how well the actors do their acting according to the characteristics of their roles, there is of course a limit to getting a high score unless the quality of directing and scenario is poor.

In that sense, I couldn’t help but look at who was in charge of the scenario and directing of the stage they were going to perform on.

But…….

Seo Eun-woo.

No matter how much I researched this student, nothing came out.

So this question arises.

Why did they assign this male student the important role of scenario and directing?

Giying-

And now it was time to check the answer to that question.

With a mechanical sound, a huge curtain begins to cover the entire stage.

The time given to each team is about 10 minutes before the full-scale play begins.

Perhaps by now, behind that curtain, props are being set up very busily.

Originally, in the finals, there are audiences, so out of etiquette, the actors and staff go up on the stage together and have a brief introduction time before closing the curtains, but this is only the story of the finals.

In the preliminaries, where several teams have to perform each day, it is quite tight to have an introduction time.

Anyway, the allotted time is over, and the stage curtain slowly begins to lift.

The judges, who had been chatting for a while during the preparation time, also focused their attention on the stage again.

Know-

The lighting that was illuminating the entire space went dark all at once. Because of that, the surroundings became dark in an instant, and in such darkness, only the stage was shining brightly as if announcing the start of a play.

First of all, the first thing that catches your eye is the desks and chairs filling the stage. And it was the actors sitting in their respective chairs.

Just by looking at that, I could tell that they were currently in a classroom at school.

However, there was one strange thing from the beginning.

From now on, all the actors who were to lead the play were lying face down at their desks.

As if you were just sleeping.

And that strange sight…….

It was a meaningful moment to announce that the first historical performance of the dreaming children had begun.

***

What is the most familiar phenomenon that announces the start of a play?

I think it might be the darkening of the lighting.

The surroundings, which had been bright all of a sudden, became dark in an instant, and the lighting only brightly illuminated the stage as if announcing the appearance of the main character.

In this environment, the audience’s eyes are naturally forced to head to the stage in front, and the cluttered atmosphere gradually becomes calm.

Usually, it starts with narration next, or with a lively and loud voice, the actor speaks lines, drawing the attention of the audience in an instant.

From noble mtl dot com

In that sense, the starting direction of Dreaming Children was the exact opposite.

In the dark space behind the stage, I carefully watched the first start of the dreaming children.

Excluding Lee Da-hye, all six students are lying face down on their desks.

Of course, this production did not last very long.

What I want is simply to make the audience question.

Why are those students sleeping face down? Why is one seat vacant, and why did you stage this kind of show? Etc.

Just.

It doesn’t matter what kind of question it is.

The important thing is to make the audience more and more immersed in the story of dreaming children, starting with that trivial question.

And as the play progresses, the moment the question is resolved, the audience will naturally come to realize.

At some point, he realized that he was immersed in this story…….

–Mmm!

At that time, a student stood up from the desk in front of him, stretching.

Hajun Park, in this Dreaming Children, was a student with the name ‘Kang Taeyang’.

Every scene in Dreaming Children usually starts with the actions or lines of the three main characters.

There is a reason why it is difficult for inexperienced supporting actors to get the start timing, but a play is an act of performing live while interacting with them in front of an audience.

Here, interaction means making eye contact with the audience often or speaking lines skillfully as if having a direct conversation with the audience. In other words, the performer needs something called ‘peace’ to look around the reaction of the entire audience during the performance.

Among our members, the person who is most skilled at that must be Park Ha-joon.

It sounds a bit obvious, but it is very difficult to notice that the reaction and atmosphere of the audience is the same behind the stage.

So I made a little difficult request to him.

In order not to make the production too long and clichéd, ask them to cut off the first start when people are just starting to get curious.

Perhaps even just a moment ago, I was lying on my stomach and watching the judges’ reactions so as not to be seen.

Because I placed him closest to the audience for that purpose in the first place.

Even Park Ha-joon’s start timing was exquisite every time he practiced, just like he is now.

Should I say that the timing is always slightly different, but neither too long nor too short?

I don’t know if it’s a realm of expectation or instinct, but it’s clear that his presence makes our stage more colorful.

For reference, the first scene begins with Taeyang Kang waking up the other students.

Taeyang Kang, who got up from his seat, exchanged greetings with his friends one by one, and at the end arrived at a lonely empty seat.

He stood quietly and looked at the desk, and Seol So-young and Moon Yeon-woo started talking to him.

─Miso, I miss you after a long time. Right?

Taeyang Kang smiled bitterly at her words and nodded, and a conversation between Yeonwoo Moon, Taeyang Kang, and the main cast members began.

And once that conversation is over, we move on to the next scene.

Then……

“Ugh… It’s gonna be fun.”

As if standing on stage as an idol.

Lee Da-hye stood next to me with a bright face full of determination to enjoy being on stage.

Now it was time for the real protagonist of the play to appear.
