Chapter 38

After I hung up the phone, the sunshine outside brightened with my spirits. Zhou Chen texted me the flight number five minutes later.

I couldn’t see him before it was dark tonight.

The waits were usually so lengthy and onerous that I felt like a middle school kid on my first date, trying on everything in my closet and still feeling unsatisfied.

I wasn’t really attractive.

Average build, average features. Qi Shu had commented on how tacky I looked. Although I couldn’t entirely comprehend the description, “tacky” wasn’t a good word to use.

Worst of all, I have a scar on my forehead. This just added insult to my already mediocre face.

I stood in front of the mirror for an hour, painstakingly applying concealer to the scar.

At first glimpse, there appeared to be no problem, but I had no clue if it was psychological, but I always assumed it became more evident the more I attempted to conceal it.

…Forget it.

In a self-defeating move, I rinsed off the concealer.

It wasn’t as if Zhou Chen hadn’t seen it; what was the use of concealing it?

Yeah, I also dressed as I liked, but everything remained the same.

Hence, I kept myself busy for more than a half-day, but in the end I just turned back to my usual appearance.

I carefully selected a few perfectly budding roses in the garden, harvested them, and wrapped them into a bouquet with a handful of ribbons before leaving for the airport.

It didn’t matter if I didn’t look nice; the roses were beautiful’.’

I hadn’t been down the mountain in a while, and the trees along the path were becoming increasingly lush. Between Phoenix Mountain and the city was a large lake. The driver said that he had to take a detour to the farthest old bridge since the one he typically used was being reconstructed.

Fortunately, I set off early  early and had plenty of time. Before crossing the bridge, I received a call from the restaurant asking if the white truffle and beef rolls in the afternoon set meal could be replaced with slow-boiled scallops with black truffles.

“I’m extremely sorry, the quality of today’s white truffle is not excellent due to the negligence of the purchasing staff; we can’t provide such items to the visitors,” the other side stated politely and sincerely.

I recalled that Zhou Chen didn’t like scallops very much, so I asked her if she had any other options.

Just as we were conversing, a brilliant bright light swept into my vision.

For a split second, I worried I’d suffered a concussion.

The two vehicles collided, and the truck knocked the car over the railing.

The old railing couldn’t withstand the enormous pressure of the two vehicles and was completely destroyed. Everything was whirling at the end of my memory, followed by the scent of blood and gasoline, as I plunged into the river with the car.

When I awoke, I was tied to a chair, soaked all over, and with tape on my lips.

Kidnapping?

My head hurt and I felt dizzy. I squinted hard to see my surroundings clearly.

It was an abandoned building, littered with sand, gravel, tiles, and bricks, with a bright moon shining through its glassless window.

A video camera and a dull light were in front of me.

Who tied me up? What does he want?

It wouldn’t be so hard to persuade them if it was for money, but I’m afraid it’s-

While I was thinking about it, I heard slow footsteps in the dark, and suddenly a man approached me.

When I saw his face, I felt a sudden chill.

——Wen Ziqing.

“Long time no see,” he said, smiling and turning on the camera.

“Take a look at this pitiful face. When I look at it, it makes me feel distressed. Say, how worried do you think Qi Shu and Zhou Chen would be?”

He had the flowers I was supposed to give to Zhou Chen in his hands. I couldn’t utter a word. All I could do was stare.

“Don’t look at me like that. I’ll help you test who loves you more. Shouldn’t you be thanking me?”

He pulled up a chair and sat down. “Let’s have a chat before they arrive ba.”

He said he wanted us to chat, but he simply started talking to himself, as if he didn’t need my response at all.

“As you can see, I’ve been permanently marked, and there is no further argument to be had; but, what I don’t get is, where are you better than me?” He leaned over to examine my face. “Do you look more like Wen Yan? I don’t think so.

“On top of that, you’re just a beta.”

He returned to his seat, as though he felt sorry.

“Qi Shu abandoned his marriage and assets for the sake of a beta. How ridiculous.

“What’s more ridiculous was that he failed to keep you when he did this step. Hah, he lost both his man and money.

“Do you know what I was thinking when I saw you at Zhou Chen’s apartment that day? I wanted to laugh. For more than 20 years, Qi Shu had always been cold-hearted. The only bit of softness he had was used on you, but you didn’t give a shit about it.

“He didn’t have the heart to torment you during his susceptibility period, but you went to accompany another alpha during his susceptibility period. HAHAHAHAHA!!”

Wen Ziqing burst out laughing, his attractive features went savage and twisted, and his eyes grew dark and frigid.

I could now say with certainty that he wasn’t in his right mind.

“You probably have no idea how terrifying Qi Shu was during his susceptibility period; even an omega couldn’t bear it. If it had been you, he may have murdered you during sex.”

He sneered. “Do you think he was cruel to you? No, that’s because you haven’t seen how he treats others.”

“In truth, I dislike Qi Shu. It’s just marriage, it’s the same with everybody. We could’ve gotten along peacefully if only you hadn’t been so demanding.

“But you just had to push your luck, since what you demanded from him wasn’t enough; you also wanted his whole devotion.

“Are you worthy? You’re simply a worthless beta who can’t even get beyond the Qi family’s front door. Are you worthy?! ”

I wanted to say that I had never demanded anything from Qi Shu, but my lips were sealed and I couldn’t talk.

“I can understand why Qi Shu has become like this; love grows with time. But what I can’t get is, what kind of drug did you give Zhou Chen?

“Doesn’t he think you’re filthy? Or does he have a peculiar proclivity for picking up other people’s leftovers?”

Hearing these words, I struggled violently, trying to free myself from the rope’s bindings.

I forbid him to insult Zhou Chen.

“Whatcha doing? I just mentioned Zhou Chen and you couldn’t take it anymore? Don’t be so fierce, they’re all watching. Pets that are too fierce are undesirable.”

The rope was too firmly tied. I had been in a car accident and then drowned, so I didn’t have much strength left in my body. After a few attempts, I flipped the chair over to the ground, creating a cloud of dust in the process.

Wen Ziqing sat there, admiring my valor as though witnessing a performance. When the dust settled, he picked up the roses that had been set aside, plucked them one by one, and threw them at me.

He stood up after and grabbed my hair, forcing me to gaze up at the camera.

“See? He’s in my hands now. I swore I wouldn’t give up a long time ago. You both have ruined me!”

“Don’t think I didn’t know it was you who did it, Zhou Chen. I can’t do anything to you, but I have ways to deal with your little lover. Do you regret it now? HAHAHAHAHA!!!

“And you, Qi Shu, if you had married me a long time ago, he wouldn’t have to suffer through all of this. Do you regret it?”

As he talked, Wen Ziqing removed the tape from my lips and patted my face with the back of his palm. “My dear, shout for help. ”

I clamped my lips, trying not to make a sound.

His expression suddenly changed. He gripped my neck and threatened, “If you don’t shout, I’ll kill you now.”

I kept my mouth shut.

The camera’s red dots flashed and stung my eyes.

Wen Ziqing‘s eyes were filled with hatred as he stared at me for a long time. All of a sudden, he released my hand and turned to smile. “Just kidding. How can I let you die alone ne.”

After he spoke, he stood up to turn off the camera, asking, “Guess who will arrive first between them?”

He appeared to be really thrilled when he mentioned this.

“Whoever arrives first will die with you.”
