Being A Superhero

Chapter 3 - Taking on the Entire Basketball Team

Monday, 7:30AM…Two days after the fight…

While heading over to school, I still kept thinking what had happen outside the Café and why they haven't come after me yet. I didn't stay there to find out. Staying at home was not an option either. Since mom was out of town, Blake and his friends would probably be waiting for me at the house.

After the incident last Saturday, I rushed home to pack some stuff and headed to the underground sewers. It's not what you think. The sewers in Sky City are really clean. This city isn't called the best for nothing. Our sewers convert our waste into energy which powers the whole city. My dad invented it when he was still here.

Why did I head to the sewers you ask? Back when we still had everything, my friends and I used to sneak out of our houses and hid down there. We had a secret meeting place somewhere in the lower parts of the sewer. The sewer is not like what you see in movies, the walls are really white, it's like you're in a secret laboratory than a sewer. The wastes go through the pipes which lead to the converting core that turns it all into power.

No one really knew this place except my father and my friends. My dad designed it to be a panic room. But after he said he'd be leaving for work and never came back, we turned that place into our personal hideout. It was fun at first, but after everything was taken from us, we never met there again.

Here it is…

I placed my hand over the wall and it scanned my hand. Afterwards, a beam of light scanned my face and retina. The door finally opened.

The room was still clean. Was someone here recently? Or is it because this place is a sealed zone?

Anyway, at least everything was still there. The beds, the couches, the vending machine, the foosball table. Even our mini library and laboratory was still there.

I scanned the entire place and saw the vehicle storage open. Yes, we had that. We stored our priceless cars and bikes here. Dad designed the place to have secret passages which led to three different places: Our old mansion, the old train station near the current train station, and the underground passage leading to one of the warehouses in Fire City.

Two of the passages were our escape routes leading out of the City while this place was our safe zone. We called this "The Bunker". And this place was a good hideout for now.

I spent the last two days trying to figure out my powers and my abilities. I went to town a couple of times as well to test it as well. But since Blake's men were still looking for me, I continued to spend my time in the Bunker.

So that's what happened in the last two days. So I'm now in front of the High School building and I'm hesitating a lot. Should I go in or not? Of course I have to. Otherwise, they'd call my mom and then she'll know that something's up. But if I do go in, Blake would be there waiting with his lackeys to beat me up. Great… just great. Hey! I know I can just beat them up, but knowing that they have someone backing them up, it'll cause me more trouble.

*SIGH*

Let's just get this over with…

Before I go in and commit suicide… Here's the summary of how my powers work and what I've discovered so far.

I'm now level 5. After I reached that point, I gained 5 . Now here's how I understood things. I gain 1 for each level I gain. The downside is that I don't get to choose which stat I get to add it to. My system generates it randomly. So much for "I can decide what kind of super powered being I can become." So to sum things up, my stats are now this…

STR: 31

AGI: 23

INT: 11

Yep…

Most of it went to Agility. Because of this, my movement became faster and more precise than ever. This made me realize that STR and AGI needed to be closely balanced out to be more synchronized.

The next thing that I tried to explore was my unique skill: . I can basically describe it in one word – USELESS. I tried using it on the items in the bunker but it doesn't work. So I went into town and tried sticking my hand out and using the skill on objects in shops. This, in turn, made me look like a fool. Why you ask? BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK! I already asked the system about this but it just keeps telling me that I have the wrong target. Ugh! Then where should I use it on?! So that's basically it.

Third, I've unlocked the in my system. A small shopping bag icon was seen at the lower right side of my view. The is divided into two parts, and . Both of these categories sell the same kind of merchandise but differed on the traits and design because of the factions. It was selling a lot of things like, , , , and

Seeing this, I've made my fourth discovery. The items could only be bought by or . And at that time, I had only 900 which I obtained from creating chaos and fighting Blake and his men. But 900 VP was really small. Most of the items there were very expensive.

There was one item that caught my attention. It was in the category.

[Every time you activate a skill or ability that might destroy the clothing you are wearing, this ring will auto-regenerate the torn Item. Unlimited use. No cooldown.]

What?!

This is exactly what I need to solve my outfit issues. I burnt out my shoes earlier. If had this at that time, I didn't have to buy a new set of shoes. At this point I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Why did this thing show up now?

Anyway, it's just 150VP. I'll take it!

I purchased it and wore it immediately. After giving it a test run by running around the sewers, I found it to be true and really effective. This is really a godly item!

I scanned the shop one more time before stopping at an "On Sale" part of the shop. There was another item that caught my eye.

Allows you to be invisible and become undetectable for 30 minutes. If you wear this it will not take effect immediately. It only takes effect if the owner puts the hoodie over their head. Cooldown 24hrs.

ANOTHER GODLY ITEM HAS APPEARED!

Without hesitating I pressed it and I was now down to 50VP.

This is really amazing!

So I finally have the first parts of my basic costume. If you can call a silver ring and a black hoodie a costume then sure. I guess…

That's practically how my weekend went. Now it's time to face reality.

I went through the door and basically jogged towards my locker to try and grab my books and get to class as fast as I could before getting caught.

But boy was I wrong. To my horror, a group of men were crowding my locker. They're wearing the basketball team's varsity jacket.

Blake's lackeys…

I peeked one more time to see how many there were. 1…2… 5… 10…

Great…

Almost the entire team is there.

There was only one way out for now. Wait for the bell to ring and run to the locker and be late for class. That's the only option I've got for now.

I slowly backed away from the corner where I was spying at but as I was doing so, I bumped into someone behind me.

"Where are you going ?" A cold threatening voice came from behind me.

I slowly turned around to see who it was.

Crap…

"Hey there… Blake... It's good to see you doing fine today. I got to head to class. Otherwise, Ms. Christine would kill me if I'd be late again." I tried to smoothly escape and ran towards the opposite direction but ended up bumping onto one of his lackeys who fell down after I bumped him.

Blake saw this and got angry. "You're not going anywhere Stevens… Not until we're done with you." He said as the entire basketball team slowly surrounded me.

"Come on Blake… I can't do this with you right now. You just got fixed by the hospital. I don't want to break you again." Oops… I shouldn't have said that. Dang this high AGI! My mouth just reacts to what my brain says!

"You're getting c.o.c.ky now huh, ? Get him!" After that command, one of his teammates tried to grab me from behind.

My instincts were telling me to dodge, and my body reacted on its own again.

I side stepped and grab one of his hands and twisted it towards his back. This made him bend forward in pain. I then met his jaw with my knee. And I'm pretty sure I hit him pretty hard because I saw this kid do a backflip before landing on the ground with his belly first. Then he snored. This guy was out cold.

When the rest of the team saw this, they were dumbfounded. Some of them started to back away slowly while others had their mouths wide open.

Even I was also shocked from what had happened. I knew I practiced that move before but that was from a really long time ago. And it surprisingly became helpful today.

The only problem was, I'm in the middle of the entire basketball team. Well, I started this fight. It's too late to turn back now.

One of the players snapped out of his state of shock and tried to tackle me from behind. I then crouched down and did a sweep towards his legs. He then tripped and dove towards a group of them which made all of them fall down.

There's my opening!

Without any second thoughts, I used the gap that was made to dash out of there. When the players saw this they immediately ran after me.

We were now running in the hallways and every student that was there just gave way. This scene was like a clip from a zombie apocalypse movie. You know, the main actor pissing off a horde of zombies and then these monsters just aimlessly run after him. This is what the picture would look like.

When I was about to reach the fire exit, I tried to open it but it wouldn't budge!

Locked…

I turned around slowly and I saw the basketball team arrive and were now just a few meters away from me. They were blocking the hallway so the only way out of here was through them. Blake made his way through crowd and stood there.

"Nowhere left to run now princess…" He mocked.

He's pretty bad at using his words. Let's just get on with it.

"You're pretty bad at using your words. Let's just get on with it."

Crap! Why did that come out of my mouth? Oh… right… high AGI.

"You're asking for it !" He yelled.

Before he could make his move, I made a move of my own.

[: Activated]

A dark chilling aura was now felt in the hallway. The jockeys who were charging at me stopped and started to tremble. One of them even started to pee his pants.

This skill is really useful. The reason why I couldn't use this skill earlier was because I didn't feel threatened. I knew I could fight my way out. But I can fully utilize this skill now that I'm cornered. The only thing holding me back is that I keep telling myself that I can't go all out or else, I might end up killing someone unintentionally.

Oh well, let's see who makes the first move…

"What are you guys doing?! Get him!" Blake commanded.

He seems to be unaffected by this? Is he slowly getting immune after dealing with this the first time?

His teammates were now cautiously approaching me. This can't end well.

Nothing I can do about it now. Time to go I guess. I was about to move forward as well when a screen popped out in front of me.

[]

[Destroying the Enemy!: Defeat the Basketball Team]

[Mission Reward: 2000 and 100 for every player defeated.]

[Accept or Reject?]

A mission? And a at that.

Huh… This is an easy choice. Accept…

I tapped on the "Accept" button and the screen displayed a time before it zoomed out and was flashing at the upper right corner of my view.

Five minutes huh? Piece of cake.

After having the motivation to beat the crap out of these bunch I dashed out towards them. Some started to back away.

The person who was at the front didn't run away and was instead charging at me. I took advantage of it and gripped his face before slamming the back of his head on the ground.

The team was so surprised that some of them fell backwards from what they just saw. I looked at them with an evil grin and started to laugh maniacally.

"Oh I can't wait to slaughter all of you…" I said in a creepy chilling voice.

This… I'm actually enjoying this.

When the team heard this, some of them started to run the opposite direction.

"Oh no, no, no… None of you can leave this place unscathed." I dashed in front of them to block their way. Even if they were athletes, none of them can match an enhanced human being. Along the way, I tried attacking as much people as I could to knock them out.

The attack pattern was simple. I would either push them to the ceiling or to the walls, or hit them on the back of the head to knock them out.

Now that I was standing in front, all of them stopped. Only six of them were left standing, and Blake was one of them.

"You won't get away with this Stevens! My father will take care of you if you touch me. So if I were you, I would let us walk away safely." He tried to threaten me.

I just stayed silent and didn't respond to his bantering.

"You hear me ?!" He yelled.

"You're right…" I replied.

He must've been shocked by my answer since he was stuttering as he answered back. "S-see, that wasn't so hard, was it? Now if-". But before he could finish his sentence, I intervened.

"You're right… I can't get away with this." I paused before continuing. "But so will you… like I said. None of you will leave this place, UN- SCATHED-." I made sure to emphasize the last word before grinning madly.

I dashed towards them and punched his teammates in the gut, knocking them unconscious. I then turned towards Blake and grabbed him by the neck.

I slowly lifted him of the ground and I knew I was choking him. "How does it feel to be preyed upon, predator?" I knew he couldn't answer but I tried to savor the moment. Just then, I snapped back to reality. I can't be kill him.

I realized what I was doing and dropped him. I can't become a monster. Blake was now coughing and wheezing. Once he calmed down, she began to threaten me again. "Stevens! My dad will end you! This school will end you! You think you'll get away with this?! You won't! And when that happens, I'd have the last laugh."

"Won't get away?" I said before laughing. Blake began to give me that puzzling look.

"Listen closely … the moment you entered this hallway without any security cameras… I already got away." I tried explaining.

"What?" He asked. He still doesn't get it?

I crouched down to meet him in an eye level before I continued to explain. "Do you honestly think that people will believe, that one guy… who's also known as a , can beat an entire group of varsity players who are well fed and well trained?"

Once he heard this, his eyes grew bigger upon the realization that this was all a trap. I knew that there was one area in the school which had no security cameras because it was taken down after a group of kids tried to smash it. It hasn't been replaced yet.

"So… Blake… listen well and listen good." I said.

I couldn't even finish my sentence before he started to beg for mercy. He wouldn't even stop crying.

I grabbed his jaw and forcefully dislocated it to shut him up. "You don't get to talk here. Now where was I? Oh yes, let's make a deal. You and your team won't touch any in and out of the school for the rest of your lives."

He seem to agree as he nodded furiously. "Good… If ever you and your boys break this rule. I'll make sure to end you. And oh, don't bother coming at me secretly." I grabbed his phone and crushed it with my hands. "Otherwise, you'd end up like your phone right here." He just nodded while sobbing.

"Now that's done…" I said as I stood up. "Lights out." I kicked his face knocking him unconscious.
