"None of Downhill's inhabitants could do such an awful thing. But you, newcomer, immediately caught my eye. You lied to me, and I even believed you."

"How could I be involved in it, illogical woman?" I was angry and offended. "Think carefully again! Would the killer confide in someone?"

She had no words for a long time. "I... haven't thought about it."

"Who are you kidding? When did you first take a sword? A week ago?" I'd understood it by her trembling hands; she didn't seem to be used to the blade's weight.

"Yes!" she cried. There were tears in her eyes. She put down her sword and made a great effort not to join in with her friend's sobs.

"Now, girls, calm down and tell me everything. Maybe I'll figure out what's going on here."

Despite all my skill in Eloquence, I only managed to calm down the two girls a half-hour later.

"Oh, Eleya, tell me everything so that I'll understand what happened." It looked like the werewolf had killed Nars, and someone else had killed the girls—since the friend knew her secret and still protected her from killers.

"My sister! My sister disappeared!" she sobbed. I hugged her. I still thought this girl couldn't kill anyone. "I... I… I KILLED this monster! But she… she… disappeared anyway!"

"Calm down, Eleya." I stroked the girl over her soft, long hair, hugging her. I asked her friend, "Tell me everything you know."

"As you already understand, my friend here is a werewolf," Katta said after a while. "I don't know how you've found it out. All I know is that someone followed Eleya's sister, Eveletta. This man tried to kidnap her, but she escaped. Fear eclipsed her gaze, and the only thing she remembered about the event was Nars' house. It was easy to guess who the killer was."

"Nars," said the fair-haired girl, wiping away tears. "I killed him, but my sister disappeared anyway. I… attacked him during my second werewolf appearance and dragged him away from the village.

"I tried to find out why… why did he do this? Why did he kill those girls? But he couldn't answer the questions. I struck him to scare him. But he just smiled and said that he didn't want to live as life gave him a terrible pain. I got angry and bit him severely.

He… he said only 'thank you'. I was scared, and I left him there, in a ditch, by the road. It was hard, but all week after that we lived calmly with my sister. Only her smile helped me to relive the nightmares I had every night. But today… today she's disappeared!" Eleya burst into tears again.

"I see." I sighed. "Initially, I also suspected Nars, but he isn't the murderer. You have the aura of a murderer of an innocent now." I understood her: she was a good girl who, defending her sister, killed an alleged murderer, but she had made a mistake.

"What should I do?"

"I don't know." I sighed, continuing to squeeze the beautiful werewolf against me.

Women… they were so changeable: they wanted to kill you, then they hung around your neck and kissed you. They were so… illogical.

What to do? Where to look for a new killer?

I didn't think Eleya was one—even if she had killed that guy. I was illogical too, but I couldn't do anything about it. At least, in this situation.

"How did you know that I wasn't experienced with the sword?" Katta asked. "How do you see auras? Are you a mage?"

"You behaved rather awkwardly with the sword, and there was no courage in your eyes. However, I'm the same—I'm not so experienced in swordsmanship. I see auras due to my ability, and, unfortunately, I am not a mage," I answered honestly.

"So walk around the village and find out who the real killer is." Eleya grabbed my arm.

"I have been doing exactly that since yesterday, but I haven't noticed anything, and I was too tired to use Search for Death by the evening," I sighed again. 'Only today I was lucky."

"Where is my sister? If they kill her, then I won't live any longer," the girl began to sob again.

"I keep thinking about the bas.e.m.e.nt in Nars' house, so I'll need your help," I looked into Eleya's beautiful gray eyes. "After all, werewolves can smell well, can't they?"

"Yes," she nodded, wiping her tears with the sleeve of her plain, faded dress.

"Then let's go together. I'm not a mage, but I can't be killed because I am immortal. So, I can protect you." I really hoped that my words wouldn't become a lie.
