Detesting The System: Sundering Fate

Chapter 3 - It Was Obviously A Setup...

"Is this a joke?" I asked, the mocking tone in my voice clearly portrayed how I felt. Even if this really was happening to me, I'd never in a million years believe it.

"No? What seems to be the problem?"

"Problem? Are these the only options?"

The distaste in my voice seemed to have subtly started grinding down the god's goodwill as he rather irritably said, "What else could you possibly want?"

"Huh? Why would I even want any of these fanatical wishes? I've got three wishes? Ok, then I wish to return back to where I was before I "died." I also wish for a couple million dollars. Lastly, I wish I could understand and communicate in any language of my choosing."

"What?" The god stood looking at me as if I was an idiot, his eyes wide open and mouth agape.

"What? This shouldn't be a problem, right? I mean, you can reincarnate me into another world, so it shouldn't be a problem if you just return me to my previous world. Never mind my last two requests which should be pitifully easy for someone as powerful as yourself to grant."

"Mhmm… Returning you to your past world is impossible. Your mind, body, and spirit were eradicated by my power, thus it currently stands as impossible for you to return with my power. However… if you take on other wishes to make yourself talented and powerful enough, it might be possible for you to eventually gain the ability to return to your world with your power."

"Huh? Why do you keep pushing for me to pick these absurd wishes to improve my strength? Can't I just change one of my wishes for you to go ask a fellow godly peer in returning me to my previous world? Surely you must know other gods if they exist."

The god seemed to have finally taken offense to my words as he defensively said, "I'm the only god proficient in Creation and Fate that is powerful enough to alter your destiny…."

The god's shady actions were starting to conflict with the kind and good-willed vibes he kept infecting me with, so I barked back, "You didn't answer my other question! Why do you insist on driving me to acquiring power? Actually..." Suddenly, a curious thought popped into my head and given I was dead, I didn't care to think of the consequence as I said, "How about this… instead of using the wishes for me, I'd like to wish for my parents to live long and fulfilling lives. I wish for there to be world peace on earth and for diseases and illnesses of all manner to go extinct."

For the slightest of moments, I could have sworn that I saw the god's face before me, morph into a downright frown. But, it totally could have been a hallucination as the frown only lasted a fraction of a second, before the regular concerned looking face on the god's face returned. God, or whoever it was, seemed to be displeased with me, as even though that frown might have been a hallucination, the atmosphere now emanating out of god changed to completely neutrality whereas before it was gentle and welcoming.

God said, "Is that really what you want? You'll give away an infinitesimally small chance to not only journey through the worlds of your heroes, but also live alongside them and become one yourself? To live a new life and becoming insanely strong… You would trade that for the betterment of a trifling mortal worl..." God suddenly stopped talking as he could see my face turn into derision from the way he referred to my past life's home.

"Trifling? Why even bother with me if I'm but a trifling mortal from such a detestably weak place? You make look on with such disappointment at my choice as if it never crossed your head that I wouldn't be selfish or something. But you aren't fooling anyone… nothing you've done so far makes any sense! Not unless you need me for something. So go ahead… If I'm going to be used either way, why not cut the bullshit and just tell me what it is that you want."

"Hmph! You're more perceptive than I thought… Heh. Heh! HEH!!!" Very antagonistic to what I'd been used to seeing so far, the kind and pure god that had been talking with me up until now transformed into what I can only describe as a demonic monster that would have been worthy of residing in the 33rd layer of hell itself. Clad in black scales that seemed to shine with infinite splendor and growing hundreds of meters in size, soon I could only make out the face of the demon as it said, "Up until now, the only lie I told you was the origin of that golden drop of blood.

Truth be told, that drop didn't come from any foe or the like, rather… it's a special Goldfinger! Goldfingers… How I've longed to possess one of my own. Alas, those pesky objects of fate break the rule of reality itself if one were to ever try taking them by force… I only recently found that out through the fact that the Goldfinger I was previously tracking down stuck to the very essence of your being even after I refined everything else away! That f.u.c.k.i.n.g piece of shit! I hate to admit it but it has me at checkmate and I've worked too f.u.c.k.i.n.g hard to let this chance escape my grasp! Now, here's what we're going to do…

I'm going to GRANT your three wishes whether you want to or not and that'll sow karma between us. Positive karma that will offset the near irreversible damage I've done as a result of annihilating you from your previous life. Then you're going to work hard to become stronger. Eventually, you'll get stronger enough for your soul to develop a Divine Spark and become a God like me and then there'll be nowhere for MY precious Goldfinger to escape! I can't do shit now because you're True Soul and the Goldfinger are one, but if you become a God yourself, your true soul will be able to bear refinement and I'll finally be able to have what I've longed for all this time!"
