Ch6.1 – The ouroboros is everywhere

  [Rerecording has ended]

[You have returned to the correct timeline]

Zong qi was in a trance for a moment.

After that split second, he quickly came back to his senses.

In front of him was the familiar interrogation room, with a glass window, an iron fence and cold light.

Except 10 minutes ago he was behind the glass window, while now, he was outside.

Zong qi lowered his head and looked at his wrist.

It was empty, there were no heavy handcuffs or angry red marks left from his struggling.

On his pupils showed that there was still 14 hours and 10 minutes left of recording, the only change was the 10 minutes he had used to change the past.

According to the system’s logic, he had now returned to the correct timeline.

Since he wasn’t regarded as a criminal suspect after he came back, he should have succeeded, right?

As Zong qi thought this, he suddenly saw Gao Mu come in.

  “Hello.”

The policewoman was as official as Zong qi remembered as if what they had talked about in the trail room was just an illusion.

After observing her expression carefully, Zong qi finally came to a conclusion.

Rerecording could change the past of a certain period of time. However, after changing it, no one else would have the memory of the original timeline, except for Zong qi himself.

“The suspect wants to see you. He said he’ll only reveal the process of the crime after he talked to you.”

Criminal police captain, Gao Mu, was in charge of the case.

This case was pretty abominable, but because the informant caused the murderer to lose the ability to move before the police arrived, the investigation speed was also very fast. Although it attracted some media attention, it was obvious that the public was more enthusiastic about unsolved cases than solved ones. The public opinion could still be kept under control.

She didn’t know why, but even though the motive and timeline were all explained clearly after reconstructing the crime, Gao Mu still felt uneasy while organising the evidence. She kept thinking that there was something she missed, thus she came here to check one last time.

The problem was still with the suspect.

He had admitted to his crime but refused to provide any clues, the process of committing the crime and the motive of the crime, which greatly hindered the later crime reconstruction.

“We normally wouldn’t let the informant meet the murderer in private but…”

  Gao Mu paused.

Obviously, she also knew that not only did Zong qi meet the suspect, but he also knocked the back of the suspect’s head and made him bleed. He could be called brave.

“You could just reject the murderer’s request. His request is unreasonable anyway, you don’t have to worry about it bringing about some negative consequences and affecting our investigation.”

Unexpectedly, the black-haired youth agreed readily, “It’s fine, it’s just seeing him again. Besides, the evidence is irrefutable, and the death penalty will be inevitable. To be able to help you is my honour.”

Although Gao Mu didn’t understand his eager attitude towards this whole thing, she didn’t say anything. She just nodded and signalled the police to bring the criminal in through the intercom.

Chen Honyi was handcuffed and escorted in by two armed police officers.

His head was wrapped in two thick bandages, and his gloomy face was black and blue, looking extremely horrific.

But no one present expressed any opinion on his injury, some officers even threw Zong qi a few looks of appreciation.

For some reason, Chen Honyi’s fingerprints weren’t recorded in the fingerprints library. After he was caught, his fingerprints were tracked and compared with several unsolved cases that had happened in the past two years.

No one expected to catch a serial killer who had evaded capture and escaped the law countless times.

Even if the crime rate was high, the serial killers like the ones in America were few and far between within Haizhou. (t/n: raws lowkey just said serial killers were special products of america LMAO)

A vicious prisoner like him deserved far worse fates than death. Just killing him alone was a mercy.

“Get out. I want to talk to him alone. After this, no matter what questions you ask me, I’ll tell you the truth.”

Ever since they had gone to him, Chen Honyi’s eagle-like gaze has been glued onto the black-haired youth standing outside the glass window, without any signs of moving.

Since the criminal suspect was not only separated by a glass iron window[1] and chained, but also requested for something that wasn’t evil, Gao Mu agreed to his condition without hesitation and left the interrogation room with the officers.

  “Bang—”

The door to the trial room closed.

Zong qi stretched lazily on the spot, “Say it, why are you looking for your father?” (t/n: making someone call you father is like uh youre superior ig)

He looked at the man opposite the iron window and felt unhappy, regretting that he didn’t give that face a few more punches.

Although there was a 180-degree turn of events after rerecording, Zong qi still remembered his confusion and panic when he was locked up in the trial room not long ago.

To be framed out of the blue was truly undeserved.

If it weren’t for this mysterious horror film system, wouldn’t he end up in jail as a scapegoat for the rest of his life? How was Zong qi not supposed to get mad?

  Surprisingly, Chen Hongyi wasn’t provoked.

He stared at the young man opposite the glass window with a hair raising gaze, splitting his lips into a smile.

“You won’t get away with this.”

Although Chen Hongyi’s words were obscure, the real meaning of this sentence was clear to the two people present.

  “Is that so?”

Zong qi said lightly, “After making me your scapegoat, you still want me to be one willingly? I never knew there was something this nice in this world. It would’ve been fine if you didn’t come and find me, but since you dared, I’ll never let you go.”

“A little kid who doesn’t know how vast the world is… you have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

With a sneer, Chen Hongyi grabbed the iron fence and exhaled a hoarse and ugly breath from the depths of his throat, “Enjoy these last ignorant days.”

“For the sake of the greater good, my sacrifice will be worth it. Soon, you’ll wish to live but pray to die.” (t/n: basically utter misery, i just wanted to retain the poetic-ness of the sentence)

  “I’ll wait for that day.”

The black-haired youth was too lazy to care about him any longer, pressing on the intercom.

  ……

Chen Honyi had been rearrested, and when he left, wild laughter resounded through half of the station.

It was undeniable that his words left a great impact on Zong qi.

No one knew how powerful the mysterious organization hidden behind the murderer was more clearly than Zong qi, who had experienced it first hand.

He’s afraid… what he’s experienced was but the tip of the iceberg.

Although he didn’t know why the organisation didn’t look out for him after rerecording, letting Zong qi send him to hail, almost as if they had completely given up. But Zong qi wasn’t naive enough to think that his opponent had let him off like that… especially after Chen Honyi had threatened him.

He had to make his own preparations in advance.

After seeing Zong qi come out, Gao Mu nodded at him, not asking a thing.

Zong qi knew that the police must have some special means to monitor the dialogue between him and the murderer back in the trial room, so he didn’t take the initiative to speak.

However, although Gao Mu didn’t have anything to ask, Zong qi did.

The enemy hidden in the dark was dangerous, powerful and deadly. To crush him was no less harder than crushing a bug.

Zong qi wouldn’t wait for the other party to set up a game, he had to prepare in advance.

After expressing her gratitude, Gao Mu was just about to leave when Zong qi stopped her.

“Captian Gao, there’s something I need to ask you.”

Against her suspicious gaze, the black-haired youth just blinked, “If I were to be so bold to ask… if this case has irrefutable evidence, but the motive and timeline didn’t add up, how would you handle it?”

Right after he finished his sentence, Gao Mu sharp gaze snapped to him under her police cap, the air around her sharpening.

Her expression turned from expressionless to cold, only opening her mouth after studying Zong qi and getting no useful information from her profiling.

“I’m sorry, this involves official secrets, no comment.”

Zong qi quickly waved his hands, “I didn’t mean anything by that.”

He knew that Gao Mu was his only breakthrough, gritting his teeth, “The murderer revealed something to me just now. To be exact, something about a mysterious organisation…”
