Doomsday Pillars

Chapter 10 - The Main Base

Finally, here we are, this is where everything will count, the location where one of the pillars will drop is here. Alex was already familiar with the surrounding terrain, as he spent many years fighting in this area during his past life. In his past life, he didn't come to this place until a few months after the doomsday pillars already dropped. By then, the surroundings of the pillar was full of refugees, many of them came after being chased by hordes of undead and monsters. It was such a disaster, and the survivors had no real leader. There were much infighting and chaos among themselves. Alex this time planned to build a better refuge for the survivor.

At the moment Alex and the group were standing in front of an open field, looking ahead, he could see tall green grass and weeds without end. Even though Bali is a tropical island and normally it's shiny and hot, as this part of the island is in the highland and close to the mountain, the clouds were low and the air was quite breezy.

It's time to work. Alex brought the group to discuss his plan, as for the land acquisition, he left it to Benny. Alex didn't necessarily have to purchase all the land, but only some of the plot already needed to be built right away, as it will mainly be the central base. So after a few designs and sketches, also considering the current land condition, Alex came up with his grand design.

The central base will be placed strategically surrounded by natural terrain. The north side will be facing Mount Agung, the west side will be next to a small river called the Tukad River. The east side will be the area where the pillar will drop, so the east side will be somewhat protected by the pillar in the future. Therefore the south will be the main entry point. It's also the one closest to the main road leading to Bay city and other Bali areas.

Alex started sketching in front of the others. It's been more than 15 years since he last practiced architecture. He didn't expect that his degree would be needed again. This time it was to design a base that could save the world. Best use of a degree ever.

The central area would cover 100 hectares of land. Ít will be rectangular in form. 4 km length and 2.5 km wide. The plan is to build a 2 layer fence around the compound. The Inner fence will be a 4 meter tall precast concrete wall. The outer wall will be a 2 meters high stone berm next to 2 meter deep ditches.

For the buildings inside the compound, it will be the command hall, storage supply building, the lab, the training hall, hydroponic garden, and of course the sleeping area. Alex planned the main base to be able to fit a minimum of 50.000 people. The more the survivors, the better the outcome in the future. But It will not be enough time to build standard houses for the survivors, so the only viable solution was warehouse structures. It will be a prefabricated steel structure. Each warehouse building with a size of 200 m x 20 m could fit 500 people. The plan is to build 100 of such building, not including the bigger sizes for supplies, for the hall and the hydroponic garden. For this Alex planned to employ another batch of 2000 workers. This batch will be all experience steelworkers, Alex also planned to set up a mini steel factory onsite.

Just to be sure he got all the preparation covered, and also to let the team contribute on the details, he brought up the design to the group and asked for their input and opinions.

"So what do you guys think? Anything else we should add?"

The group seemed to look at each other in confusion. Then Tony, the construction manager, said:

"Actually boss, if you want to involve us in the design, it would be better to tell us a little bit about the purpose of the design."

"For example, who will use it and what for.. .. I am really sorry boss, at the moment we really are lost about what you are trying to make here."

.

.

awkward silence

.

.

Alex slowly said, "Actually we are preparing a doomsday shelter.."

.

more awkward silence

.

.

Alex suddenly wished his past life and reincarnation would make him more intelligent and smarter to answer a question such as this...

.

suddenly he thought of something...

.

.

"Tony, how long have you followed me?"

"9 years boss"

"What have we been building the past 9 years?"

"Houses, apartments, shopping areas. Almost everything boss."

"Who are we building it for?"

"For our client boss"

"Exactly, it's the same thing, our client pays us a lot of money to build a doomsday shelter such as this-"

"You understand?"

Alex believed this group didn't know that the money came from his own pocket.

.

One of the managers said.. "oh yes boss I saw it on youtube. These doomsday shelters are currently very popular in the west. Although never as big as this one."

.

.

Then more people added... "If so, we should add an underground tunnel for safety and an outside post.."

Some people actually believed it, he guessed the other just go along with it.

.

.

The ideas just kept flowing. Some ideas were actually quite usable. Alex thought the life before doomsday really was peaceful. People had too much extra time for TV and fantasy novel.

Alex then let Tony lead the construction, some materials had already been ordered before, he just needed to add according to the new design. Alex actually let him buy some more extra, just to keep for future supplies. Alex asked Tony to coordinate with Nina about the funds and the other supply deliveries.

All the design were done. It will take days to see some progress, Alex couldn't just sit around and wait here. He got many other things to do. The next plan couldn't be completed just by money. It will be dangerous, so to succeed, at first he needed to get one of the artifacts from the temple ruins to help him. Alex then left by himself, using the car with the gear and equipment that he already prepared.
