65 Chapter 65: Silver and Small
Heh, heh~ So Giorgio came to the conclusion that my biggest weakness was Salem. Because he dies easily. The fact that I hadn't killed my partner was proof that I wanted him alive. Hence his mortality was my weakness.
A fine conclusion.
But there was a fatal flaw. He knew nothing about me. About my magic.
Then: footsteps behind me. Small and steady. Like those of a child.
I turned myself invisible. Moonlight shone through me. No one could see me, but I could see everyone.
The tiny steps grew louder. Someone was behind me.
I turned. A boy. Round and soft. Disheveled black hair. In those classical stories about witches, he would've been roasted above a fire. But I don't eat children. There are fast tastier meals out there.
But there was something strange about him.
He was a child. No doubt about that. But his eyes didn't have the look of a child. They didn't have the innocence, that look that believed everything in this world was kind and loving. Instead his gaze was empty.
He stopped walking. Looked around. A hint of contempt on his face.
I leaned against the tree. Watched him. Why did he stop walking? His destination must've been the camp fire. Was he surprised to hear Salem's voice? But he wasn't looking towards the camp fire. He was looking around himself.
Then he stopped. His eyes began to glow. A gentle pulsing silver. He looked at me. At my invisible body. His gaze wandered upwards. We made eye contact.
I stood still. I was shocked. No one should be able to see me when I was invisible. Not even other witches. Especially not a mere boy.
I raised an eyebrow. Looked at his silver eyes. The same magic as mine? In a boy?
Huh...
He broke eye contact. Turned and walked away. He headed towards the camp fire.
I let out a deep breath. Such insolence. To look at me, see through my magic and then walk away like I wasn't worth his time.
Heh. This boy is interesting.
I snapped my fingers and became visible again. Turned myself into a pretty towns girl. Followed the boy to the campfire and said, "There you are, Salem. How mean of you to leave your wife behind~"
Salem turned his head. Saw me. His eyes were wide, his breathing sharp.
The boy looked at me. Apparently his name was Sam. I didn't know what he was, but he wasn't just a boy. He had silver eyes. He was able to see through my magic. A feat no one else had ever managed. Should I kill him? Or should I ask questions and then kill him? Hmmm…
What would father do?
I said, "So..."
I looked at the boy. Then at Giorgio.
