The night of the demon’s appearance in Einfork.

The knights were moving as they had been trained, but they could not hide the urgency in their eyes.

“Guard the infirmary!”

“Spears! Get more spears!”

The mere appearance of a demon inside the fortress was an unaccustomed occurrence, but when a gap opened up on either side, even those accustomed to battle could not help but panic.

It was only because their focus remained steadfast that they were able to form up immediately.

A man in a red cloak led the way, he was mounted on horseback.

He rushes towards the demon with indescribable momentum.

The area of the barracks was not ideal for horseback riding, but everyone soon realized why.

He was standing upright with both feet on top of the fast-moving horses.

He steadied himself, and then flew off.

He grabbed the roof of a barrack with one arm, then swung himself on top of it.

Thud, thud, thud.

He used his horse as a ladder to reach the roof, then raced across it like it was a flat surface.

The sight of the crown prince on the triangular roof, running straight for the demon, was enough to raise everyone’s spirits.

Boom—!

Under the moonlight, the silver blade moved at an invisible speed.

The crown prince had chosen a high place to fight a huge Demon.

The Demon was intimidating with its size alone, but its speed was no match for the crown prince.

Thump!

He leaped and landed on the Demon’s shoulders.

Soon enough, its huge head crashed to the ground.

“Waaaaah!”

As the headless Demon wobbled and collapsed, the crown prince leapt onto another roof and landed, his bow still pointed at the Demon, lest it accidentally shoot their master.

The tense atmosphere quickly gave way to a loud roar.

With spears, swords, and arrows, the knights rushed toward the remaining demons.

“Seth!”

The crown prince was about to descend from the roof when he heard the scream.

Even through the chaos that was still reverberating from the shouting, that one name stuck in his ears.

“Seth! No!”

By the time he heard the cry, the crown prince had already realized what was happening.

What he hoped wouldn’t happen always did, and what he’d feared most since he’d realized she was here was unfolding.

It felt like an icy knife plunging into his heart.

“Your Highness!”

There was no time to waste.

Shane leaped across the roof, closing the distance in an instant.

He leapt onto the nearest horse and kept running, snatching the spear from the knight who held it.

In the blink of an eye, he was running headlong towards the Demon that had grabbed Seth.

The Demon had been on all fours since it snatched her up, but now it was on two legs.

Whip, whip, whip.

He thought about cutting through the wind with his blades as he watched Seth whip this way and that.

Thud, thud, thud.

Vaslow led some of his knights to hurry after the crown prince, but there was still a good distance between them.

No matter how many times he’d been wounded, how many times he’d brutally slaughtered a demon, or how many times he’d witnessed death before his eyes, Shane’s expression had always remained the same.

It wasn’t a fiery face like the other knights.

It was always the same.

Expressionless.

Now, however, it was different.

His golden eyes were narrowed in desperation.

He had never looked like that before, not even when his flesh was torn from his body.

Every time Seth passed over the bladed Demon’s mouth, the desperation became even more visible.

His arm holding the spear was yanked back as hard as he could, then thrown forward.

The movement was more desperate than ever.

Pow!

The spear slammed into the Demon’s mouth, but it didn’t collapse, instead it began to glow with pain and anger.

‘Shane, sir.’

He could still hear the voice calling out his name.

The echo of it still beat hotly in his heart.

A searing heat rose in his throat, and he bit his lip hard, desperate to stop time as he ran towards her.

“Seth!! Aah!”

The priest’s scream cut the air unfamiliarly.

The Demon stomped, its front claws pressing together.

Seth’s form was momentarily obscured between them.

The Demon’s front claws split open on either side, as if it were tearing something apart with great force.

It was clear what it was trying to tear.

Chaaaahhh.

But at the same time, the Demon stood still.

For a moment, the air around it became still, as if it had stopped breathing.

It tore at the sacrifice with both arms as hard as it could.

With the spear still in its mouth, the Demon immediately split horizontally and collapsed.

Thud!

Shane’s tremendous strength had split the demon in two with a single blow.

Even though they knew he was in a different category from ordinary humans, everyone was still frozen in place at the unimaginable sight.

The Demon’s blood poured over the crown prince.

“Gods….”

Someone had found a god.

Shane dismounted and hastily examined the Demon’s front claws.

Surely the Demon had been slashed before it could use its claws.

But an uneasy feeling washed over him, clutching at his heart, and his premonition was soon realized.

He couldn’t find her.

Its front claws were shaped as if it were clutching something, but there was nothing there.

She should have been there, but there was no sign of it.

She seemed to have evaporated completely before his eyes.

“Seth, Seth!”

The awakened priest limped over towards the side, and together they searched for any traces of her.

He searched inside the Demon’s mouth, but there was no sign of her either.

Thud, thud.

The crown prince’s sword moved quickly, and something fell off the Demon’s side.

Upon closer inspection, they were thinly sliced hides.

Soon enough, the corpse was sprawled out, with its insides exposed.

Several of the knights fell to their knees.

Even the most battle-hardened of them found it hard to stare at the dismembered body in close proximity.

“Y—Your Highness!”

Vaslow, unable to approach easily, panicked and called out to his master.

His master was rummaging around inside it, oblivious to the prying eyes.

He seemed to be desperately searching for something that could never be lost, something that he cherished a lot.

He even searched and searched again.

He was scanning a corpse that a normal person wouldn’t even be able to look at straight in the eye, searching for a single hair.

“There’s nothing here!”

“If you find any clothes, report it immediately!”

So that night, with the crown prince in the lead, they searched everywhere.

Later, they searched the interior of the barracks, but the search yielded no clues.

Since the crown prince was searching more desperately than anyone else, it was inevitable that the others would become even more sincere.

She was last seen swinging from side to side, held by the Demon’s claws.

There should have been a corpse, but she had disappeared.

It was as if she had teleported away.

“The prince himself cut it up and searched it, but he left it there, unable to burn it, just in case.”

I was so relieved to be out of the way of the demon, and only thought of returning as soon as daylight broke.

I hadn’t realized the impact of my own absence overnight.

For now, the disgust from the Demon’s corpse was outweighed by the knowledge that Vaslow had shared with me.

Now that I suddenly disappeared, he even rummaged its insides, wondering if I had been eaten by it.

He did it himself, for me.

The crown prince of the empire searched desperately just for a slave.

“Hey, where’s your highness?”

I walked behind Vaslow, my vision was blurring.

I stared intently at his back, knowing that if I thought about it too deeply, I would faint.

I stopped by the crown prince’s barracks, the knights’ training center, and the dressmaster’s office, but there was no sign of him, no matter where I looked, he’s not there.

We returned to the demon’s corpse, but still no sign of his shadow.

Finally, Vaslow called out to one of the knights who was still examining the corpse.

“Oh, he was still talking to the priest in the square!”

The knight looked very tired, though not as tired as Vaslow.

“The square? I see. read only at salmonlatte . com. This annoying watermark is not there.Good work.”read only at salmonlatte . com. This annoying watermark is not there.

Vaslow raised his un-splinted arm in greeting.

He didn’t even break his stance in response.

“Ah! Burn that thing now.”

Vaslow said to him, as if he was getting tired of walking by it.

“Eh? But your highness has asked me to….”

“Burn it, I’ll take care of it.”

“I— b—But, H–he.”

The knight was visibly embarrassed.

His stiff demeanor quickly became disheveled, and he made a face.

“Yeah? Yeah! Okay!”

He looked like he could be ready to burn it at any moment.

Vaslow waved him off with a flourish.

“He’s not here either, where is he?”

We stepped out into the square, but saw nothing, just people cleaning up yesterday’s debris.

There was no sign of the priest they had been talking to.

“Hey, did you see the Prince?”

“Oh, he walked over there.”

We walked towards the direction the knight pointed to.

If he was talking to the priest, I wondered if he had gone to the infirmary.

“Vaslow, are you idle, or are you going for a walk?”

A familiar knight called out to him.

Vaslow hurried over to him, as if pleased or proud with himself.

“Arnic, I wonder if your highness is here.”

“Well, would I be hanging out here like you for no reason?”

“He’s in here?”

“…Yes.”

Arnic sneered, then suddenly turned serious, and began to squint like a man who has been dazzled too much.

“Wait, let me go in there.”

“Oh, my God!”

Arnic’s finger on his forehead was visibly trembling.

My hands were probably shaking as well.

The spot where he was standing was the one I knew very well.

It was a small barrack that bordered the square, smelling of herbs.

It was my home and my workplace.

I wondered why he’s inside the herb warehouse.

Vaslow seemed to be very slow to report to the door.

Arnic was still looking at me, saying holy shit over and over again.

Creak.

The door to the herb warehouse opened.

There was nowhere to sit in that tiny space.

The door swung open and a distinctive aroma wafted in.

I had only been away for a night, but the scent hit me like a homecoming.

Vaslow gestured for me to come closer, and a familiar silhouette emerged from behind him, with his head bowed.

It was a natural motion, taken to avoid bumping into the door due to his height.

“Ah.”

His black hair shone even blacker in the sunlight, the illusion of all the lights gathering around him, made him look even dazzling.

Beneath his long lashes, his golden eyes were the most beautiful thing in the world.

I should have bowed, but his intense stare made me bite my lip.

“Seth…?”

As soon as I heard his voice, my vision immediately faded, blurring the image of him.
