2. Supporting Character A (2)

There was no other choice.

If he missed this drama, he wouldn’t know when another role come. However, he thought it would be better for him to meet Jin-woo before they meet at the script reading site.

Shin decided to contact Jin-woo after a long time.

‘Is his number already changed?‘

It’s saved on his phone! His heart felt heavy when he tried to call the number. He called hoping that he wouldn’t answer because the number had changed, but Jin-woo answered the call at once.

[Shin hyung?]

Shin was startled by his name that rings as soon as he called, whether it’s because he didn’t erase his number or he picked up. But one thing he’s curious about is why his voice sounded so cheerful.

As he recalled the past when he left with resentment, Shin felt emotional and apologetic at the moment. Jin-woo hasn’t changed since then.

“Yup. It’s me.”

[Hyung! I’m enjoying your drama. You’re doing well right?]

Shin choked up again because he was still a good dongsaeng[1] to the point that his resentment was overshadowed, but he quickly calmed down his emotions and continued to talk like an actor.

“Yeah. Are you doing well too?”

[It’s always the same for me.]

Happy emotions overflowed from his voice. In fact, unlike Shin, Jin-woo always worked well so he had no choice but to do so. Jin-woo has always been a positive child since the first time he saw him.

When everyone else said no, he would say why not and rather liked the challenge. He thought that many people like Jin-woo because of his strong mentality to say that even if he failed, it was only an experience for success.

“You didn’t change your number?”

[I changed my number, but I kept it alive in case I got a call from the hyungs.]

Jin-woo separated with a lot of resentment from the members no matter how nice he was, still it couldn’t be okay. Shin felt sorry that he had been waiting for a contact from the moment they separated until now.

‘I should’ve called you before I messed it up.‘

If he had, he would have at least kept a minimum of pride. Of course, Shin couldn’t afford to protect his pride even now, so he tried hard to speak with a bright voice.

“Do you want to meet?”

[Sure. Sounds good.]

Shin found Jin-woo wearing a black hat as well as a black mask. But the more he covered it, the more it shone that he’s a top star. Of course, Shin wasn’t ugly but even when Jin-woo was covered, people’s eyes were all on him.

Shin chose a pork belly restaurant as the place so that it wouldn’t feel like a bribe, but he quickly regretted it.

“Are you Maru-ssi? I’m a fan.”

“Can you give me your photograph?”

Recognizing Jin-woo, the surroundings became noisy. Jinwoo being a good natured person he couldn’t turn them down.

“Shall we move?”

The smell of pork belly had already permeated his clothes, but seeing Jin-woo in trouble because of them, he couldn’t say let’s stay here.

“May l?”

Jin-woo hasn’t changed much since then or now. He still felt good seeing that innocent smile.

“Then I’m sorry, but I’ll leave after this. It’s been a while since I met my favorite hyung after a long time. Sorry again.”

Favorable smiles were seen at Jin-woo’s polite greeting. Shin moved with Jinwoo realizing that this is what a star must do.

Eventually, they went to the restaurant that Jinwoo usually goes to.

It’s said to be a restaurant that’s frequently visited by celebrities as the rooms are divided. Of course, the main food hasn’t changed much. No, it might have changed a lot in terms of price.

‘Korean beef from Samgyeopsal[2].‘

It felt like he hadn’t eaten korean beef for ten thousand years. It’s now a broken family, but it was a house that Shin used to lived in the past. When Shin debuted as an idol in Space, he had a korean beef party at home.

Shin suddenly remembered that he ate a lot of korean beef that day because he can’t gain weight even if he ate a lot.

‘It would be nice if I could go back to those days.‘

However that could never happen, so Shin decided not to dream in vain. Even if he went back 10 years, there’s little chance of success.

‘I wouldn’t know if I had that star quality.‘

A scentless flower. He has never heard a better expression than that.

Shin couldn’t have known what other people were saying.

“Hyung. I heard about you on the way, you can tell me.”

“Huh? What?”

Shin smiled as naturally as possible as to not notice what he was thinking about for a while, but Jinwoo had always been quick-witted. He didn’t bother to say it and continued the conversation.

“I heard you’re filming the same drama as me. Is that why you wanted to meet me?”

He must have said it as a joke, but Shin had no choice but to feel stabbed.

‘Because that’s the truth.‘

When Shin apologized and saw Jin-woo, Jin-woo smiled and moved the grilled meat to Shin’s plate.

“It’s not good to eat overcooked beef, so eat it now.”

Jin-woo’s star quality is loved, but it’s aIso because of his kind personality.

He spend the money he earns to donation and also engaged in volunteer work. It’s something he had seen since they started working together in Space, so Shin respected Jinwoo in that sense.

That’s why he’s telling him the truth.

“You’re right.”

“What?”

“I thought it’d be better to meet you first before meeting at the script reading site.”

Jin-woo smiled softly at Shin’s subdued voice.

“It doesn’t matter what the reason is. It’s important to eat meat with hyung like this.”

Shin’s eyes widened at the meat piled up on his plate before he knew it. Shin knew Jinwoo eats as much as him, but he was sorry that he gave it in such way.

“Eat now. And help me. I’m still hearing people say that I’m starring in the drama that I’m acting on.”

Shin shook his head and laughed. Shin and the public knew that Jinwoo had been away from acting for a while.

Jinwoo practiced acting hard after Space disbanded, and as a result, he was evaluated as an actor worth watching now. That bloody effort was recognized. Of course, he’s better at acting than Shin, but there were many supporting actors who were better at acting than Shin.

Shin ate hard not to forget the taste of the meat juice bursting from the Korean beef, which he hadn’t felt in a long time.

In doing so, he missed those days when they worked together as Space. They say it was when they were called Maru and the Boys, but he liked the group activities better.

He was at least more equal to Jinwoo than now.

He rode a car provided by the agency after a long time.

It wasn’t just some work, but a drama written by Kim Ye-in, so the attention level was different.

The main characters are all top stars, raising expectations for the drama. In addition, Shin heard the rumor that the script was written well, when he actually checked it was true.

‘It captured both artistry and popularity.‘

It’s a fact that everyone knows this job isn’t easy. There’s no way Shin, who’s working in the field, didn’t know.

The script sent as a revised manuscript was of much better quality in material than the one he read in his email. What Shin particularly liked is the proportion. It increased.

He’s a character who can gain popularity if he acts well.

It was a golden opportunity given to Shin. Shin promised to never miss this opportunity and entered the building with the script already in tatters.

‘Wow.‘

It was different from other dramas in terms of atmosphere. He didn’t know how many cameras there were. Although he knew that they were recording and taking pictures for promotion, he could tell that the scale was different from other dramas by the number of cameras prepared.

Shin eagerly greeted the people around him before sitting down where his name and role were written. The supporting actors greeted each other first, since the main character hadn’t yet arrived.

“Lee Shin-ssi. I knew you were handsome, but you look much better in person.”

“Thank you for your kind words.”

Shin was rather shy when he was active in Space, but his personality changed when he became a supporting actor. He tried to look good in front of others so he changed his personality to be quite friendly.

But even so, the entertainment industry is sensitive to money. No matter how much Shin’s personality changed for the better, he didn’t spend it unless he thought it would be money.

Shin felt slightly intimidated when he saw that the supporting cast was also formidable. They were all told to be good at acting.

‘The atmosphere is different.’

As more actors in the acting world flew around and came to the broadcast, Shin’s presence among them blurred and disappeared. As Shin’s presence faded over time, the door shone wide open.

“Hello!”

Jinwoo showed his presence with a bright greeting. As if anyone could tell that the main character of this place was Jin-woo, there was a unique sparkle that caught people’s attention in an instant.

“I’ll say my greetings again a little later, but please take good care of me today!”

Jin-woo greeted energetically and sat down in the front. Then the female lead came.

It was Yoon Ga-hee, the goddess of the romcom genre.

He heard that she did the same acting every time, but there was no drama Ga-hee appeared in that failed. The public’s evaluation was that she was excellent at reading the script, so she hit the jackpot every time, and there was almost no other line in her work.

The production crew were convinced that it works because it was chosen by Ga-hee.

In addition, Jin-woo, the handsome man of the nation, was cast as the male lead, so this was a drama that could be done even if it wasn’t meant to be. It was a guaranteed hit unless natural disasters occured.

After greeting Ga-hee, the writer came in with the director.

The director was Kim In-han who’s currently famous for his great directing. He was a rare director who moved to drama while doing entertainment shows.

Kim Ye-in, the writer next to him, had a sitcom career, so she wrote comedy elements better than anyone else. Blending the comedy and romance that she used to do had no choice but to produce fascinating works.

‘But…‘

They were good, but neither of them had a good view of Shin.

‘What? Did I do something wrong?‘

Their eyes looked at the other actors with affection to the point that it felt a little awkward to call it a coincidence, but became cold when they saw Shin.

It was as if someone who you didn’t invite came.

And it continued when the actors stood up and introduced themselves.

“Hello. I’m actor Lee Shin playing Sang-hoon. Please take care of me.”

They claps their hands, but looks displeased.

Shin felt an ominous feeling that this role might not be confirmed. His heart became heavy as he had a strong feeling that he wouldn’t be able to appear at the next script reading site.

‘There are many cases where it changes even after reading the script.‘

But he didn’t want to give up like this. He had to do his best when he saw Jin-woo was there with him.

So Shin acted according to the character he had been studying in his own way.

However, his confidence had fallen considerably.

When he looked into their eyes, they had an ambiguous expression on their faces.

“Let’s take a break for a while.”

Everyone stood up at Director Kim In-han’s words. Shin got up from his seat and went outside to calm the tension.

‘I’m craving cigarettes.‘

He quit it for acting, but in a desperate situation like today, cigarettes came to mind first. As he was walking, Shin heard a voice whispering in the hallway.

Normally, he wouldn’t eavesdrop on such things, but it seemed strange that he felt like he had to.

“Director and writer. Lee Shin, is it true that you dislike him?”

“Of course we dislike him. He was put as a condition for Lee Jin-woo to be in the drama.”
