Fate/Inheritance

Chapter 30 - 29: When Death itself danced in the night (Part III)

I looked at the looming shadow who slowly walked inside the hall. The atmosphere and air itself felt the sense of 'Death' and became silent. Only the sound of the Grim Reaper echoed out. I do not know when but the crazy guy making his grand speech stopped and looked at the Death Incarnate in silence and awe.

When his tattered black cloak passed the shivering Beastkins who barred their teeth at the Heretic now lay on the floor in fear and the elves famous for their sensitivity in the surroundings sensed the walking 'Death' and fainted. Everyone he passed on they all fainted or frozen in fear no matter how strong or weak they are they drop to the ground with pale face. But the man wearing a skull's mask has only a single goal. His gaze straight and true only looked at the face of Drakel who had started to shiver in delight.

"Did finally my Goddess appreciate my offerings!! For she even sent an envoy from Heaven to bear witness this night! When the living die and incarnate to new ageless bodies!! Ahhh~!! I am overjoyed to tears!!" He laughed with tears flowing down his face, even from here in the awkward position I have where even my enemy is already shivering in fear. She can sense his childlike joy of being noticed by the same Goddess she follows and obey.

But alas, the one who calmly walked in this hall is not an envoy that bears witness but an envoy that will follow his teachings and the doctrines he obeys.

« "Nay…" » He said for the first time when he stood tall in front of the man who planned to put the souls of the living into dolls. His voice filled with wisdom and unbendable authority rang in the hall. Confused, Drakel looked up and met the gaze calmly looking at him behind the mask.

Then it dawned on him, the angel of death in front of him did not come in good tidings but the original task he always does, sending people to the next life. Standing up and retreating he said in despair;

"For even the Goddess to deny my offerings that she will put me to death!!! With all of my existence I offered to her! I followed her teachings to the very core!! This sense of betrayal makes me laugh! HAHAHAHA~!!!" He said his words with a tone of a mad man on his edge. I looked at the scene especially with the man who had spoken only a word in this night. I already have forgotten to escape but same for my enemy, the strings that had been trying to turn me into a mincemeat had already fallen to the ground.

« "Naïve…" » he said in the tone of an elder.

« "Such a naïve yet pure thinking… but ye had walked the wrong path, preacher." » The cloaked figure said.

"Don't talk like you know everything about me bastard!!!" Drakel said and made a hand gesture. The false guards who was busy guarding the people suddenly moved and charged to the black figure.

« "Burn." » He spoked when he saw them, and with those word blue flames burst forth in the bodies of his enemies. It spooked me when they did not even scream and when the flames subsided I saw strangely that the corpses had satisfied smiles.

« "I do not know you, preacher… but I had cut such lost and unredeemable lambs like you since I took to my role." » He said and continued walking with resolution to the retreating Drakel.

"N-no!! I must not fall here! Stop staying there and save me!!!" He screamed and with those words the magical lights hanging above and the candles flickered and turned off.

« "Hmph! COME OUT!!" » Scoffing the cloaked figure commanded and blue flames lit the candles and when my vision returned I saw countless kneeling shadows shaking in his presence, I also noticed that the strange aura hiding me and my enemy also vanished and we are also had been compelled to kneel.

"Wha-! Why are you kneeling there get him!!!" Drakel said shivering when he saw the eyes behind the mask glowed.

Looking at the figures around him the executioner told the kneeling figures.

« "Children of Darkness who is wielded by the wrong hands. Ye who's souls shackled by thy heathen before me, hear thy words of wisdom. Retreat! For thy had not carried my name and did not disgraced thee self in your faith. I would had cut you lot but the time you return to thy God still did not arrive." » He said and with those words the shadows quickly dispersed like a startled animal. I already noticed the girl beside me starting to run away but I managed to stop her and whispered some few words making her stunned.

Nodding she quickly left. I returned my sight to the event unfolding in front of me I started to have suspicions to the man before me but I cannot collect any form of information in him, I felt my senses are being blocked by something and all I can see is the form of a Grim Reaper.

« "Now heathen who escaped death by binding others' of thy twisted faith. I commend you of thy dedication to your God, in respect I shall grant you the right to say thy last words." » He said and black fog had already slowly engulfed the hall and only the flickering blue flames surrounding us and the peculiar glow of his eyes illuminate the place.

"…When, did I lost my way?" Sighing in resignation he said. The executioner nodding told the lost twisted lamb.

« "To answer thy question will be up to debate. But hear me preacher, devotion to the God ye serve must not be mixed with personal intention and feelings for that is no different from fanaticism." » He said and resumed walking to Drakel who was crying in the floor but with a smile.

« "It seems you already understood your mistake preacher. But the evening bells had already rung in thy fate for too long. My purpose here is not to return you to thy path but to send ye beside thy God." » He said calmly and when the peculiar black fog engulfed him and the surroundings totally he… vanished. Yet his next few words echoed into the room like a death sentence alongside his footsteps akin to the Grim Reaper.

« Listen. The evening bell has tolled thy name."

"The feathers foreshadow your death, and behead–"

"Azrael!" »

I only saw a blinding flash. It was too quick and I already saw him in front of the frozen Drakel. When he stabbed his sword to the ground countless white feathers quickly danced around the halls alongside the toils of giant bells echoing around us. When we returned to our senses by the beauty of the phenomenon we gazed at the place where they were and I only saw the headless corpse of Drakel without any trace of the Grim Reaper.

We stood shocked at the even we just witnessed but an echo of warning reverberated in the room forbidding us to tell and record the tale we just witnessed for our head will be taken if we disobey. I later returned into the room William and I shared after helping take care of the aftermath. I looked at his sleeping face blissfully and suddenly noticed the Class Cards sprawled carelessly in his hands.

Sighing I suddenly had the urge to kick his smug face and ask him about something.
