Chapter 74 - 70: The Adventurer’s Guild

"Now then, shall I begin a simple introduction and what people of this occupation usually do?" Rosa

Said at the other side of the counter in her uniform. After a few 'peace talks' between the two and a future 'negotiation' that will happen between them and Sake is planned, Rosa now in her 'Lucy' persona had us return to the Guild to register.

"First, there is a very stark differences about mercenaries and adventurers." She said raising two fingers.

I remembered that some of those 'instructor candidates' back at the capital introduced themselves as mercenaries. Well there were a few classmates of mine who practiced under them.

"A mercenary is one who is usually those who are usually hired as bodyguards that protects nobles and rich merchants. They also tend to be hired during war and used almost always by both conflicting sides as another loose unit to either bring a bit higher of a number of soldiers or those elite ones that are payed upfront to do a 'mission impossible' task. They are usually those retired or decommissioned soldiers and knights due to various reasons but because they are skilled at taking human lives they are active even now. Some adventurers who either was kicked out by the guild by breaking any laws or voluntarily left became mercenaries also but majority of them tends to be bad eggs so you better watch out for them." She explained crisply and curtly. Looking at her, you can really normally not notice anything about blowing her cover except those maybe who are as spiritually s.e.n.s.i.t.i.v.e like me.

"Adventurer's in the other hand have always a primary goal, helping all of the sentient races. We are still payed with our services so don't think we always do a 'noble job'. Being an adventurer, is always free to all races with no discrimination unless the country you stayed had a prevalent spread of racism but I believe you can easily understand the gist of it. Also adventurer's is sometimes also called an 'odd job employee' that do almost all 'legal' work of what you can think of. It was a word propagated by a hero before who had features similar to those who lived in the East but let's not talk about it.

First and foremost, an adventurer's task is mainly exploration of dungeons, hunting dangerous beasts and monsters, collecting materials in the wild, discovering or uncovering mysteries hidden in the world and helping in expanding the livable territory the sentient races have. These are mostly dangerous tasks so adventurers usually stick around jobs that are as 'humanly' possible and those who do specialized tasks from these areas tend to either be insanely powerful and famous or those with personalities that have a 'certain' quirk.

Because an adventurer is one of the professions out there that have almost no restrictions in entering and living in countries and territories we abide in very strict rules and restrictions also. First, an adventurer must not do tasks that are given by those of a country or religion especially if it's out of personal gain and the organization's one sided interest. You can only accept tasks from them if it's either already evaluated and accepted by the guild's standard, a task that hangs the survivability of the kingdom or religion against a non-sentient danger and those who's menace that must be swiftly dealt with.

Secondly, an adventurer must never engage combat to those beasts or monsters that are sentient or harmless and have a very pacifistic nature. Aside from angering the great God of Beasts, you must not engage combat to those beings due to two reasons. Either a beast hoard might be forcefully occurred that will surely have a huge amount of damage and casualties or that they are too powerful that casualties ranging from destroyed villages to countries may occur. You can only engage and eliminate them if their target is destruction of either a certain race, allied being and territories the sentient races have or they just want to see everything destroyed in their sight.

Lastly and one that is sadly that brings a lot of head ache. Under any circ.u.mstances, adventurers must never kill those who are of non-combatant jobs or deemed to be younglings to their specified race. This rule tends to a be broken due to a lot of reasons I cannot list and talk about but you can easily get the gist of what it's made for.

These three 'Primary' Rules must always be remembered and serve as a warning to adventurers so they cannot abuse their given authority and those who violate these and the other rules written in a mandatory rule book you must buy have different levels of punishment from fines, suspension, being kicked out of the guild and even the blade of a guillotine and being sent to the mines can be given.

You have any questions sir William? If you do not, we can proceed at the ranking system and the registration of the guild." Rosa politely said, hearing her very detailed explanation was already full filling so I can only shake my head and gestured to continue.

"Very well, the ranking system of the guild uses is based in some materials used weapons and armor to what nature have. From lowest to highest; Wood, Bronze, Iron, Silver, Gold, Obsidian, Adamantite and finally Mithril. The ranking system was also used by those adventurer parties and the power structure of those teams tend to vary due to the different strengths of each member..." Rosa continued on while she explained about how the ranking is in compared to the base status in the military society of this world.

Wood, are those who are newbies or to be exact newly conscripted soldiers,

Bronze range from weak squires to those who are veterans,

Iron are those who already experience bloodshed for a certain time and are experienced combatants,

Silver are those who have the skill to become knights,

Gold are those who can easily snag a knight captain position,

Obsidian are powerful individuals that can get good positions in knight orders,

Adamantite can be compared to individuals that can easily smash a whole battalion alone,

Mithril basically they are as strong as those who take the positions as Grand Commanders in kingdoms (which I sometimes question why that stinky old man Fredrick who keeps drinking took that position).

There is also the Ten Stars, the strongest Mithril rank active Adventurers in the world but I am still a bit farther from that place.

"… This ranking was based in how they are energy conductive and how rare we can harvest, do note that there are some subcategory materials out there that have the base structure such as these that rivals or overwhelm even Mithril like a branch from the legendary World Tree so don't think the guild is joking with the ranking." She teasingly said eliciting a laugh from me. Also when I asked later, it seems Sake's rank was originally Gold but it was ranked down due to her slightly idle performance when she stayed here but apparently she was part of a powerful Obsidian Party when she was still active.

"The tasks and jobs you take are also implemented and have a rank designation also and you can only take those that are one rank higher than you and you're not allowed to take those tasks that are of two ranks lower than you." She curtly said with a warning glare as a bonus. Seems she enjoy this job also apparently if she is serious in doing it.

"Also some of the race specific guild branches use a slightly different ranking of the three like for example; Those of the elven race rank theirs as Adamantite, Mithril and lastly World Leaf. You can easily notice the differences based in how the adventurer's identification device's style is. Ahh~ we have a sample here about the dwarven, common and the elven adventurer's i.d. (too long so I would stick to this one)." She said and pulled out three metal objects from a drawer at her side. Looking closely, I noticed that they are shaped similar to a dog tag back home and their very distinct style.

One of them, the one at the left have a very thick, outline alongside a very clean and precise workmanship and I noticed the unique dwarven style found in their products.

The middle one, which I deduce to be the one which is considered to be spread around 'commonly' (most of the 'common' thingy in the novel points to humans because they are one of the biggest populations in the novel... maybe goblins and orcs have a higher one? I don't know and don't want to think of it. Yet.) had the slightly plain style but based in Rosa's much further explanation, there are also different minor carvings and style based in the country of origin the ID came from, it just shows how united and separated the humans at the same time to develop such diverse culture.

Lastly the one in the right truly screams of those tree loving and pacifistic elves… ok I only met one who is a magic maniac that uses her student as target practice and weak alcohol tolerance and one who have half of it in their blood that I instinctively avoid and I can't guaranty they have that base personality in how they are commonly portrayed.

It has a very 'natural' feel in it that the way the 'frame' or edges of the tag that also have a 'very' artistic carving of leaves and tree branches that even mimic the texture of tree barks realistically. It also has retained the veins and curves you notice in those metallic substances (something like how eggs have that smooth texture from afar but up close it actually is not) that I can somehow weirdly 'feel' by touch. The thing that is scary about it is that there is even a strong magical enchantment in it that retained even now based in how long it is manufactured that my Structural Grasp can read, it is the 'oldest' of the three objects and the dwarven one nearly have the similar age due to its sheer quality that did not even rust for years.

"Back then, we used cards as a way of identification but one of the heroes suggested to use this style of craftsmanship. Apparently this was carried by soldiers in their world and can be easily be taken from their bodies in case when they die. An adventurer always carries two of this and doing this *click* makes an amulet like necklace that seals and protects the information the adventurer have and sometimes, their final wills." She said and demonstrated how two dog tags suddenly turned into an intrinsic pattern.

"Now to start your registration, will you please pay for 2 silver coins as a fee please. One silver will stay as a deposit in case your license as an adventurer expires without a year of renewal or a planned retirement so cases that disabilities and personal problems makes you feel inadequate in this profession in the future. Lastly, if you lost it the renewal is 5 silver coins." She said and both Yamada and I gave her the fee. I nearly forgot, but apparently the currencies they use is the classic copper, silver, gold, dark gold, and platinum.

Back then, it seems all countries had their own style of currencies but because of the global threat a lot of things was 'united' such as the currency which was suggested by our hero's (I had the thought before of what my seniors can do if there was no global threat and what crazy ideas might pop out of there head) and a united bank was made apparently and they are the one tasked to make the currency used. There are, still some other kinds of currencies but only used by either the enclosed kingdoms and empires or their just too arrogant and plainly 'powerful' that they had the right to have one.

After paying, they asked us to touch a magical tool that will record some of our basic parameters which I asked Sapphire as always to falsify some 's.e.n.s.i.t.i.v.e' information that came from us. In the end what showed is;

Looking at the information listed, we nodded cheerfully while our inner WEEB was actually celebrating inside. It seems the power levels shone in the dog tag was ok because there had been some bad rumors that was spread around (which I can think where it came from…) that I merely won by a fluke and at the same time at the fight Sake and I had merely a more 'stronger' and 'faster' physique.

After registering from the guild, we did not take our first tasks and run straight to the God Crystal of the town to check our stats. Apparently the Crystals are mostly kept in churches and temples of this world's religion and by tradition, a new church will safe keep and guard it yearly like the Chinese Zodiacs kind of thing.

Well after finishing what my purpose is while ignoring the blatant stares from a certain excited goddess, I swiftly dealt in tethering the necessary connection I need while feeling an unknown yet familiar energy seeping inside of me.

"Yosh, where done for the day. What you guys plan to do?" I asked Yamada and Sake who was beside me.

"Hmmm~, well the owner (inn owner) asked me to buy some stuff at the market after you two finished registering~ and my stomach and allowance is in grave need if I don't do my share of work at the inn so…. Sorry I really need to go danna~!!!" She bowed in embarrassment and all I can do is say to her to keep safe. Well before she left in a rush, she whispered something that I will just privately keep that made me blush in embarrassment.

"Hmmm, I guess I need to contact the girls and ask some of the information they have already here, other than that I want to stroll around and buy interesting stuff." Yamada thought out loud. Oh by the way it is noticeable but the one who is actually loaded of money from us two is him. Aside from me, who's equipment is easily ready and my hobby of blacksmithing and crafting some tools and medicines can be easily satisfied by the teachings thought by my teachers. Yamada on the other hand had a strong business ac.u.men and because his training has a higher demand of resources than mine, he tends to find some ways to earn money.

"Oh by the way what are you going to do now? Training again?" Yamada suddenly asked before we separated.

"Hmmm, Nahhh I think I'll start to use one tonight." I told him my answer which I had been thinking about ever since we entered the guild. I just have this weird jumpy feeling that something strange is going to happen and I felt that inheriting another Heroic Spirit's ability might help me in what may happen that made me this jumpy.

"Really? Well, can't help you with that I guess~. Just wake up looking alive ok~?" He said lazily and waved his hand and quickly vanished in a corner. Looking at the place where his presence vanished, I shrugged my shoulders and returned to the inn.

Common Grounds in Job Types:

While those jobs found in the region William and Yamada currently are is that the jobs start from different beginnings.

A warrior or a knight's path starts from a Squire, both have a different way of building foundations when they started training so the qualities and the fighting style of the practitioner is already melded in the beginning.

While a mage of a specific school starts from an Acolyte. They can freely learn at the beginning 2 circles about the ways from different school of thoughts but sometimes it is not implemented. Because they need time in studying theories and spells, they always start their future path of magic at the very beginning of apprenticeship based in their affinity or their taste (those who suddenly switched on training may have multiple reasons why but commonly magic practitioners always specialized in one school). They can only be properly called as the higher standing of acolytes (examples are: Elementalist, Fire Mage, Necromancers, etc.) when they reached the third circle where the specialized spells must be imbued to their circles for a faster spell casting. (William's case is slightly different but that topic will be for later on)

While Qi Artist is the most commonly found job in the Eastern Type Jobs and they would advance to either Martial Artist or Qi Practitioner/Cultivator when they reached the third stage of cultivation. Cases of training in both path had happened but because the characteristics of the two paths tends to restrict each other, they always get stuck in strong bottlenecks till they can't proceed.

Lastly, these types of job tends to depend on the techniques the practitioner practice that depends in the compatibility, synergy of the learnt abilities. In short, someone can easily reach one of the highest state if all the conditions are in optimum state. The 'sky is the limit' is one thing to call this type of jobs.
