Fate's Request: A Harry Potter FanFiction

Chapter 48 - End of Holidays - 46

David kissed Hermione goodbye on her cheek as he left her in the Leaky Cauldron after they spent the morning eating breakfast in London in a niche 'muggle' café that he'd had Mel track down for him.

Normally they wouldn't have left Cross Manor, but the previous night Hermione had received a letter from Remus Lupin, curtailing the events of Harry and Dudley being attacked by Dementors and how the Ministry had expelled him from Hogwarts, but the Headmaster was working on it and not to overly worry.

He invited her to a safe house that they planned-on bringing Harry to, as home at Little Whinging, Surrey had proven to be unsafe with the appearance of Dementors.

Not much else had been written in the letter, with exact details being a security risk, so with profuse apologies to David, Hermione accepted Remus' offer to stay in what she didn't yet know to be number 12 Grimmauld Place.

After thinking of the location of the Black Family home, David found that even he was affected by the powerful charm and couldn't recall the location of the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.

He did remember that he had written it down and placed the information in a locked box in his study, which he planned on later reading to see just what would happen in his attempt to circ.u.mvent the spell Dumbledore had cast to protect the Order and Harry, but it was a mere curiosity of his and not something that had any real weight.

He knew Hermione would spend the end of the summer holidays with Harry and co. after the attempt on his life, so David had no hard feelings as Harry needed the support of his closest friends, even if he would be ungrateful for it.

They actually hadn't spoken much of Harry, with only a passing conversation at breakfast about the Daily Prophet and how it wasn't a very impartial newspaper at all.

So, with a little sadness, but complete understanding, David hailed a London Black Cab and made his way to his new London property to inspect it himself while he was in the area.

The cabbie gave him a curious look and tried to make some small talk with him, but David's curt and aloof answers cut the conversation short, for his mind was elsewhere.

---

"Mel, I'll be taking a quick trip to check up on the Giants for myself," David said as he came down the stairs wearing his basilisk hide armoured clothing.

"Are you sure master? I checked the previous night and the Death Eaters have left along with Madame Maxine," Mel explained with a curious look.

"I know. Just a scouting mission Mel. Besides, the Death Eaters may have returned after reporting to Voldemort," David explained as he grabbed a fresh scone from the table, munching it down quickly.

"Very well, I'll have lunch waiting," Mel said with a nod of her head.

"Fitz! We're going to see the Giants," David shouted, summoning the Phoenix from wherever he was in an instant.

Fitz trilled and landed on David's shoulder and looked at him patiently, knowing the drill and awaiting David casting the Disillusionment Charm on the both of them.

"Ready," David said after casting the spell.

Fitz chirped and flamed them away towards the Giants of Belarus.

---

Seeing as he was on the outskirts of the Giant's territory, David muttered, "Point Me, Hagrid."

David's new wand spun in his palm and pointed to the location of the half-giant, somewhere in the outskirts of the Giants territory.

Without a word, David made the trek, following his wands guidance, occasionally having to levitate himself and Fitz up top a small cliff or bypass some trees as he got closer to his destination.

He could have used a broom, but the more he used his wand the better, so he did just that.

Eventually, he found himself before a cave and using an altered version of Homenum Revelio, David knew that Hagrid and a Giant that was most likely Grawp, his half-brother, were in there resting.

Thinking of the two brothers, David's mind couldn't help but wonder just how Hagrid's father had gotten the Giantess Fridwulfa pregnant or how their relationship even worked, as they were married for three years before she abandoned the two of them due to Hagrid being too small.

The size of a child was a major thing to giants it seemed, and the books he'd read on the subject seemed to have alluded to that as well.

With a shake of his head, David left after confirming the two brothers were still alive and probably planning out heading back to Scotland on foot soon.

With that out of the way, David channelled an overpowered version of Homenum Revelio, causing pulses of the detection magic to erupt from his wand silently and reveal any human presence in the vast forest.

He could feel every single pulse as it spread out around him for kilometres, the spell attuned to discovering giants and humans only.

He confirmed that there was the same number of giants within the forest as before he left and Hagrid was the only 'human' around apart from David.

Smiling, he whispered to Fitz, "Get us out of here."

---

"How did it go, Master?" Mel asked as David walked into the Manor after Fitz decided to drop him off outside rather than in, flying off to enjoy himself.

"Went fine, no sign of Death Eaters and the same number of giants. I didn't want to stick around any longer, but I'll continue to check up on them every few days," David explained to her as he took a seat at the kitchen table.

"I can do that for you Master," Mel said as she plated up some pasta for David.

"I'll take you up on that Mel, but I would still like to see them myself from time to time, David replied as Mel grated Parmesan cheese over his pasta, knowing he liked a heaping of the Italian cheese with his pasta.

"Thanks, Mel," David said with a smile, digging into his lunch.

---

With Hermione gone, time flew by for David who spent his time training heavily while also taking sparse trips to Belarus to check up on the giant colony.

About a week after him first discovering them, Hagrid and Grawp had finally left and made their slow trek towards Scotland on foot and there had been no sign of Death Eaters or thinning of the giant colony.

The confirmation that his simple plan regarding the giants was working lifted a great weight from his shoulders. For all his attempts at subtly making things better, he could have very well been making things worse.

During his time alone at Cross Manor, David was also in constant contact with Hermione via Owls. They talked of Harry a bit, with Hermione mentioning he was moody and upset with her and Ron for not telling him more via letters before his attack.

David didn't have much to say regarding that, for he knew Dumbledore had likely written to both Ron and Hermione and asked them not to discuss the subject with him while he was at Privet Drive. So, their conversations were mainly about benign things and their schoolwork, for Hermione wasn't allowed to discuss the goings-on at Grimmauld Place.

Regarding the Headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix, David found that the parchment that had the location on gave him back the knowledge of the location but couldn't circ.u.mvent the power of the Secret-Keeper, along with the other protections the Fidelius provided, such as the property being invisible, intangible and unplottable.

---

Blasts of various coloured spells were being cast rapidly from David's wand as he attacked multiple targets at once with different spells, pushing his skills with his wand and magic to their limit.

While he was on the 'offensive' he was also casting quick shielding charms on his sides, replicating protecting various witches and wizards in a mass duel, the likes of which he will eventually see while protecting muggleborns and will most definitely see during the final war at Hogwarts.

With a final spell that sent ten targets flying across the room, Davids arms fell to his side while still holding his wand and squared his shoulders, broadened his c.h.e.s.t and took deep breaths to get more oxygen into his lungs.

Mel appeared by his side with a quiet crack, holding a towel for him to wipe away the sweat and dust.

"Thank you, Mel," David said as he dabbed at his forehead with heavy breaths.

"You're welcome, Master. You have a letter from Miss Granger," she said further, pulling the letter out of thin air and holding it to him.

Laying the towel on his shoulder, David took the letter from Mel via his left hand and opened it with his wand.

He read it quickly and upon finishing it, let out a small sigh in relief.

"Good news?" Mel asked curiously.

"Yes, Harry's charges were dropped," David explained as he folded the letter back up to be later stored in a box where he kept all the letters he got from Hermione.

"A weight off Mr Potter's shoulders," Mel said with a nod of approval, happy for the Boy Who Lived, as, like many from her race, we're forever grateful for his role in vanquishing the Dark Lord, however unintentional it may have been.

David hummed in agreement, gathering his thoughts, "Any news on Madam Bones?"

Mel sighed and shook her head, "Dawlish has been most unsatisfactory in this regard, no word from her has been heard since she left the Ministry. Only brief sightings in Diagon Alley occasionally."

"I see," David said, taking a moment to think before adding, "Tell him to keep digging, I doubt he will get anywhere, but still…"

"Very well. Would you like breakfast now? Or after a shower?" Mel asked after receiving the orders for Dawlish.

"I'll have it now, see you upstairs Mel," David said as he turned to his training room and began waving his wand around, returning everything to its proper place while also repairing the various broken items.

---

After the news of Harry's acquittal, time continued to fly by for David.

He felt he was close to finally mastering his wand, only needing just a little bit something more. He was already performing magic that was more powerful than what was capable with his old wand, but he knew this new wand had more in it.

Nothing ridiculous, like repairing a completely broken wand, but he knew after being so in tune with it, it had a little bit more left to offer him.

David tried to arrange some time with Hermione in London, but Mrs Weasley was being her over-bearing self and had put a stop to their planned date once she had heard.

Left resulted in a fair few letters from Hermione complaining about the woman, which surprised him. Ranging from how she was forcing them to clean a disused magical home by hand and some comments about how once Weasley children graduated, they moved out.

David let her vent and didn't dare question her judgment regarding the Weasley matriarch, for he knew she was somewhat overbearing and was grateful he had the freedom of his own home.

To make matters worse for Hermione, Mrs Weasley had decided she would do everyone's school shopping herself, further dampening Hermione's spirits as she was locked up in Grimmauld Place.

She was left counting the days until the Hogwarts express left King's Cross station with desperation.

David felt a little for her, for her salvation at Hogwarts would be soured by the human-toad that was Dolores Jane Umbridge.
