Chapter 13: Try Being Arrogant Again

The other young man laughed and placed his arm on Cao Kun’s shoulder. “Things are different now. Lin Yi is already married. Are you going to help her cheat? I know she’s shameless, but I had no idea you were the same.”

Everyone laughed out loud as if Lin Yi was a joke and treated her with zero respect.

Lin Yi’s eyes were cold as she sneered, “Cao Kun, Zhao Bin, I can’t control your mouths. After all, your parents didn’t teach you well. But when are you going to return the money you borrowed from me?”

Money? What money?

The smug and arrogant smiles on Cao Kun and Zhao Bin’s faces froze.

“You were desperate and pathetic when you wanted to borrow money. Now, are you pretending to have amnesia just because I want you to pay me back?” Lin Yi said slowly, “Alright, I’ll settle the score for you.”

“Cao Kun, you borrowed a total of $57 from me, and Zhao Bin borrowed $34. You two often ask me for the things my family sends me. As for the number of times you come to my place to freeload, I can’t even keep track. Am I right?”

Tens of dollars were not a small sum in this era. $1 was enough for the daily living expenses of a family of three.

Cao Kun and Zhao Bin were Jing Yan’s roommates. In order to get close to Jing Yan, Lin Yi got close to Cao Kun and Zhao Bin. In order for them to put in a good word for her in front of Jing Yan, Lin Yi agreed to everything they asked.

Her family had sent her a lot of good stuff. As long as they asked for the stuff, she would give it to them. Sometimes, when they asked her to borrow money, she would never refuse.

“Are you crazy? You gave us those things voluntarily. Why do you want us to return them now? Since you offered to treat us, I don’t see why we have to return anything.” Zhao Bin was already feeling a little guilty. His tone was no longer as arrogant as before.

“Voluntarily? I used to like Jing Yan, but I didn’t like the two of you. Why would I voluntarily give you something? Or even give you money? Do you think anyone will believe you if you say this? Also, why do you think you can get a free meal? Whenever the villagers buy dinner, people usually treat them back or pay up. Do you think you’re better than the rest and get to eat for free?”

In this era, food was scarce. If they ate someone else’s food, they had to pay or use resources to repay the debt. It was the unspoken rule. If they refused to cough up the money now, Lin Yi would not let them off easily.

After taking things from her, they still mocked and humiliated her. They were clearly shameless.

Cao Kun and Zhao Bin’s expressions kept changing and became uglier. In the end, the two of them looked at each other before Cao Bin said, “Um, we don’t have the money to pay you back for the time being… Let’s talk about this in the future!”

As long as they did not return the money, what could Lin Yi do to them?

Lin Yi had already guessed that they would not return the money obediently, but she was not angry. She just smiled at the two of them and said, “You’re not going to return the money, right? It’s alright, then you can pay with your things. I’ll go to your room later to take a look. If there’s anything valuable, I’ll take it all. Oh, Cao Kun, the watch on your wrist looks pretty good. Why don’t you hand it over first?”

Cao Kun’s expression immediately changed. He hurriedly covered his watch.

This watch was sent back from abroad by his uncle and could not be found in the country even if people had the money to pay for it.

How could he give it to Lin Yi?

“You don’t want to repay the debt? Alright, then come with me to see the village chief and the village officials later and see what they think about it! However, the two of you have to think carefully. If this matter blows up, you might have to go to the police station in town. If you don’t repay the money you owe, you’ll be sent to a barren desert as punishment.”

Lin Yi was not worried at all. After all, she was a creditor.

Cao Kun and Zhao Bin’s expressions changed when they heard the word punishment and promptly lost their arrogance. Zhao Bin smiled at Lin Yi and said, “Yiyi…”

“How dare you call me Yiyi?” Lin Yi looked at him coldly.

“How about Big Sister then? Can you not be so heartless? I’ll definitely return the money. I’ll return a portion to you first and the rest in a few days, okay? Please don’t tell the village chief about this.”

When Lin Yi saw the spineless Zhao Bin, she thought to herself: “If we were living in times of war, he would definitely be a traitor!”

Cao Kun panicked and said to Lin Yi, “Big Sister, we’re friends, why are you being so serious? How about this, let’s have dinner together tonight. I’ll ask Jing Yan out. Would that make you happy?”
