Gate: War Of Two Worlds

Chapter 16 - 16: Siege of Italica

The Ranger team that Sharpe is leading reaches the city east gate. Once they got there, they notice how bad the situation is, being in pure chaos. Bodies are being taking away in wagons and new barricades being rebuilt.

"My god, what happened here?" Sergeant Jerry William ask, speaking more out load then a direct question to anyone. He looks over by this buildings and see people that are sick and wounded. "Sir?" He looks towards Sharpe, wanting permission to help them.

"Go." Sharpe says to him, knowing what he is about to ask. "But don't get carried away, stay in sight."

Jerry nods and dash off to where some wounded men were at.

Lelei watches as Jerry rush off to a group of wounded people and then looks to Sharpe. Jerry is the team medic. "Why is he going to help them? They are your enemy."

"Because they are our enemy, that does not mean we do not help the civilians. We have a treaty called the Geneva Convention back on Earth; it is guideline for war. We do not intently attack civilians, prisoners and wounded. If we can, we help." He will then look at her. "With limitations of course."

"But, why? What benefit is it to you?" Lelei asks, not fully understanding it. Based on what she has seen so far about these people, she has an idea of what the answer will be but, it is interesting on how complex their world is.

Sergeant Major Randy Dodson will b.u.t.t into the conversation. "Because we want our enemies to treat our people with good care if they become prisoner. With some form a basic care."

"Yup, it is not perfect, but we do what we can. You see, we are not barbaric. There needs to be some rules in war. What we do to the enemy they will do to us. On top of that, the character and manner of the soldier matters greatly to us." Sharpe will add.

"And we separate civilians from soldiers. By law, we do not intently kill civilians. They are not combatants and deserve to continue to live this daily lives." Sharpe finishes and she looks around.

"So, what are you going to do here." Lelei asks him, wondering what he is thinking.

"Still figuring that out Lelei. In the end of the day, my people safety is my first priority. Not these people internal issues." Sharpe says and then begins walking away. He is heading to the princess, seeing her over by a building.

As the Major walks away, Lelei looks to Randy. "Your world is confusing but interesting. I find it interesting on how complex your rules are and that so many nations are able to follow them."

Randy will chuckle after hearing that. "It is nice but not perfect. It did require millions of dead bodies to come up with these rules."

"War is a nature of life." Lelei will say. "That is actually one-way magic became widely used. War needed magicians so schools were created, which I attended."

Rand then nods to what she said. "Sad truth, war usually is the tool for progress. We better head to the Major before he gets too far, knowing him." He then looks towards Staff Sergeant Andrew Steele. "Sergeant, stay with Jerry, don't let the locals get to friendly with him."

"Yes Sarge." Andrew will say and begins walking away.

The other two will then head to Sharpe as be talks with the Princess.

***

"What is going on Princess?... actually, is there something else I should call you?" Sharpe will ask her, realizing he dosn't fully understand the proper titles these people use..

"YOU!" Hamilton will point towards Sharpe. "You will respect your princess. You do not approach or speak unless called upon!"

Princess Pina will raise her hand to her friend Hamilton after hearing that. Normally that woulod be the proper thing to tell someone however these people are different. It wouldn't be wise to anger them. "It is ok Hamilton." She will look to Sharpe. "You can just call me Princes Pina."

She will look up to the wall, up there will be Grey and Norma, talking about something. Most likely on how to defend against the next attack. "We are preparing for the next attack."

Sharpe watchs and is amused what he saw. He looks back to Pina. "Who are the attackers?" He asks as he looks up at the wall, analyzing it.

Being a little confused, she looks at him. "Ahhh, we are assuming they are ex-legionnaires."

"How many are there?" Sharpe asks, just being very direct.

"You cannot speak like that to your highness!" Hamilton will b.u.t.t in again, getting angry on this common enemy soldier not respecting heir royalty.

Again, Pina will calm her down and look back at him. She will be confused on the way this solider is acting now. Looking around, at roofs, the gate, the people. "I don't know. About five hundred attacked us yesterday but Sir Grey thinks that was just a advance force, weakening our defenses."

"Hmm... I agree." Sharpe comments and then looks back at her. "Thank you." He will then start to walking away, heading to the staircase that leads up the wall.

Pina stands there watching as Sharpe walks away. She is just baffled by this man, not understanding him. "Who are these people...?"

Lelei and Randy will catch up, both would be confused on what he is doing. "Sir? We shouldn't be getting this involved."

"Gate, small, two OPs." He will say, talking to himself. He will get to the top of the wall and starts looking around.

"HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP HERE!" One of the knights will yell, being Norma. "Your kind is now allowed here!"

Sharpe will just ignore the Knight and walks right pass him, deep in his own thought. He will point out the tree line and then look back into the town. "Hmmm... ok."

That Knight will march over, his hand on his sword handle. "HEY! I am talking to you!"

"GET THE F.U.C.K BACK!" Randy yells as he gets on top of the wall. His hand will be on his M-4, ready to use it to defend Sharpe.

"What! You do not get to speak to me like that! I am a Noble Knight!" He will say back to Randy.

That is when the older knight will walk up. "Save your energy Norma. Let them be."

Then that old man will look to Sharpe. "What brings you up here and disrespect our leader like that?"

"I disrespected no one." Sharpe responds as he thinks on the situation. He will then look to both of them as both Randy and Lelei walk up to his side.

Sharpe then walks right past both of the Knights, looking around still. "We can do it; we need a line right there." He again, speaking to himself.

"What are you doing!?" The younger Knight demand, not liking that his enemy is freely walking around up here.

Sharpe will look to him. "We are going to help defend this city until the cavalry arrives."

"Sir, is that a good idea? We could just leave?" Randy will ask, not fully on board with that plan.

"I agree, we do not need your help." The young knight will also say.

"We could but it will be risky. To take this place they will need thousands of troops. They are somewhere out there, and we could easily run into them. There are only ten of us. Here we have a better chance." Sharpe quickly respond.

Then he will look to the old man. "So, what is your plan?"

"We are working on that now. There are no real soldiers here left. A few guards but not enough to hold this city. Only the peasant." Grey replies. He will look down to the crowd and look at all the confused and frighten people. The people are scared, sensing there will be no tomorrow. Many are struggling to the most basic soldier tasks.

"They are to use to the protection of the Empire. Their moral is gone, and they can barely muenster the will to fight knowing they don't stand a chance. We cant relay on the peasant." The young night says.

Sharpe will sign after hearing that. He looks down at the people down below and see the same situation. "Bull." He then look to Randy. "Sergeant Major, get everyone attention."

He will nod and then walks past the two knights. Hey gets to the inner edge of the wall. "Lelei, mind using a flare spell?"

Lelei nods after hearing that but is a little confused by the request. She walks up between Randy and Sharpe, raise her staff and for a short moment of time glow bright, catching the people attention. Everyone below stops what they are doing and looks up to the wall.

Right then Randy would yell at the top of his lungs. "ATTENTION! YOUR GOD-EMPEROR IS ABOUT TO SPEAK!"

Sharpe will look at him after hearing that and give him a 'WTF' look.

Randy just wink back at him. "Troops are rallied sir."

Sharpe just shakes his head, chuckling a little. He then looks back down, seeing all the 'peasant' looking at him.

"My name is Major Sharpe of the United States Army. I am not going to lie to you; this is a very bad situation we are in. We are facing a well-trained force coming to take this under defended city. Because of the situation, we are going to help." He will say, taking a deep breath. "I see some of you are scared of the coming battle, that you are not soldiers, not trained for this. In other words, common folk. Do not feed that fear, do not think yourself as less as they enemy."

He will hold up his hand, point his figure as he makes a point.

"History has shown the common man able to overcome great crisis, defeat great armies and even topple empires. Let me make this clear, all we must do is hold for a day. All we must do is wait for our cavalry to arrive. I have full faith you are capable of defending your homes, your families, your city. If we do this together, we will win. Orders will be given soon so be ready. Let god be with you."

After speaking to everyone, he walk away from the edge of the wall, grabbing his water from his belt. After taking a drink, he will mumble. "God, I hate speeches."

He will then look over to the two Knights and see both confusion and anger, mostly on the young knight.

"We got a lot of work to do, lets go." Sharpe says to them.

"Who put you in charge!?" The young knight will ask.

"You did when you didn't have a plan." Sharpe states to him. He then waves over Lelei and Randy to come off the wall. Truth is, he was never really going to accept a support role with them. Americans are leaders, not followers.

Once he gets down there, he will see some spirits lifted in the town folk.
