Chapter 35: The next day

“… Yakumo-san? Is it okay if I ask you to stay away from Haruyuki-kun a little more?”

“Well, I have no intention of sticking to him for your kind information.”

“No matter how you look at it, it clearly feels like you’re sticking your skin to him.”

“That’s just Tojo-senpai’s impression. If you were to ask me, I could get even closer if you want to argue with me about it.”

A few days had already passed since Yakumo met Fuyuki for the first time.

I thought that since Yakumo remained quiet for a while, there wouldn’t be any more problems, but that thought of mine got debunked.

For some reason, both girls glared at each other with me sandwiched between them.

Dazzling sparks scattered between the two, making my position uncomfortable.

Moreover, being sandwiched by two beautiful girls on both sides attracted the sharp gazes of the boys surrounding me, making me feel more and more uncomfortable every second.

Even though Fuyuki alone had caused quite a bit of hatred to gather towards me, adding Yakumo, who had a pretty good appearance among first-year students, to the mix ended up enhancing that.

Well. I do understand the feeling of wanting to glare at me with hatred.

“… Masaya.”

“Don’t talk to me. I’m irrelevant in this.”

I even got betrayed by the man I thought was my best friend.

But I even understood why, though.

If Masaya were in the same situation, I would have also probably abandoned him.

I mean, there’s probably nothing I can do about it.

“Senpai! I also tried making some tamagoyaki, so please have a taste!”

“Ehhhh…?”

What Yakumo took out of the bag following that was a two-tiered lunch box.

Inside were neatly arranged side dishes and rice sprinkled with seasoning.

Looking at the side dishes one by one, I caught glimpses of those which were burnt or cut improperly, but that again served as proof of the efforts she put into it.

At the time of her part-time job, I had heard that Yakumo had never cooked before, so a slight feeling of excitement developed in my heart.

Even I could understand that she worked hard and made it for me.

However, since I already have the bento that Fuyuki made for me, wouldn’t it be a bit disingenuous to put my mouth on the bento made by Yakumo after all?

While I was conflicted by such emotions, my attention moved towards Fuyuki, who was making a dangerous ‘smile’ while clearly being displeased.

“What a coincidence. You see, I even brought some tamagoyaki today as well. Since we are already here, let’s have Haruyuki-kun decide which tamagoyaki tastes better.”

“Yo–you, you are joking, right?”

“I’m not joking in any way~ It’s okay. I believe in you, Haruyuki-kun.”

I never ever thought that trust without concrete ground to stand on would be so utterly scary.

Combined with that smile that didn’t look like smiling, it was all becoming more frightening.

“You got that coming then! Senpai! Please decide!”

“Even Yakumo…”

I got pressed by the two beautiful girls.

I was well aware that I was in a privileged environment as a man, but the situation that I was in was just too heavy for me to survive.

I wondered if the tagline of ‘Both are delicious’ worked here.

Judging by their eyes, it didn’t seem like I would ever get forgiven if I were to say that, but at this rate, one of them will definitely end up getting hurt.

“Go on, Haruyuki-kun.”

“Senpai! Here, aa~aah!”

[TL notes: Not especially making him eat, just asking him to eat with that gesture.]

—I guess I had no choice but to steel myself.

Thinking about my relationships with them so far, I first had the tamagoyaki made by Fuyuki go into my mouth.

Yakumo had a sullen expression on her face after seeing that, but it couldn’t be helped.

I couldn’t just leave Fuyuki in the second spot over here.

It goes without saying that the tamagoyaki made by Fuyuki was delicious.

She did say something about not changing the seasoning unless there was a reason to, but for some reason, instead of getting used to it, it seemed to be getting tastier day by day.

It may be a story without a context, but was it because I am starting to get attracted to her? I feel like whatever she makes ends up as delicious――No, maybe it’s really just my imagination.

“So, Haruyuki-kun, how was it?”

“It’s delicious. Somehow I feel relaxed.”

“Fufu~ Thank you very much.”

Fuyuki pats her chest with a relieved expression.

It was something I realized after I started living with her, but it is really important to convey your feelings to your partner by words.

Being able to convey things without having to tell them or perceive them by how they breathe was, unfortunately, a skill unknown to me.

And well, the person at the receiving end of those words of appreciation, Fuyuki, was also ultimately happy when I did that.

“Senpai! Mine as well! Hurry…!”

“Ah, yeah… I know.”

I swallowed the tamagoyaki prepared by Fuyuki and made my way to eat Yakumo’s as I got hurried.

Un— It’s tastier than what I imagined.

Given she could make something so delicious as a beginner in cooking, she would definitely have no particular difficulties in the future.

However,

“… To be honest, the taste of Fuyuki’s is definitely better.”

“…!”

Yakumo’s expression was distorted immediately.

On the other hand, Fuyuki was making a ‘guts pose’ with her small fist at an angle only visible to me.

Things such as these made her really cute, but let’s put them aside for now.

“Yakumo’s was also quite delicious, but I prefer sweet tamagoyaki more, you see.”

“Eh!? Is that so!?”

“I could really feel the flavour of the dashi stock, and well, while the taste itself was really delicious. How to say, I’m sure there was always a salty tamagoyaki made at the table at your house I guess.”

“Yes… I was taught how to make it by my mother, but as you said, we’ve always had salty tamagoyaki on the table…”

Well, that’s what made the big difference.

There are probably people out there who would prefer Yakumo’s tamagoyaki out of the two.

Masaya, who was standing right there, eating his own bento meal with that innocent face, was a person who could never accept sweet tamagoyaki ever.

Well, I can understand that there are people like that too.

I’m sure it’s similar to the problem of what to put in that tamagoyaki that becomes the ultimate deciding factor. Probably…

“Guu… that’s unfair! Didn’t Tojo-senpai know that from the beginning!?”

“It’s a given. After all, I’m Haruyuki-kun’s girlfriend, you see.”

Yakumo gritted her teeth, looking at the image of Fuyuki, who said it very proudly with her chest upright.

She was definitely vexed at that outcome.

“…! For today, I’ll be satisfied with just hearing ‘delicious’ from senpai! But next time, I’ll come again with a sweet tamagoyaki! I won’t lose to Tojo-senpai!”

“Ah, Yakumo-san, please wait.”

“Eh?”

Fuyuki stopped Yakumo from sprinting out of her classroom and stuffing something right into her mouth.

Probably because of that sudden surprise element, it seemed that Yakumo had unintentionally swallowed it,

“Meow, meowat just now―”

“…That’s the taste of sweet tamagoyaki that Haruyuki-kun really likes. Please use it as a reference for next time.”

“Eh… why?”

“Next time, let’s be fair and square. Well, I definitely won’t lose even then.”

“!!! Sending salt to your enemy… I don’t care if you regret it later on! Even though that was delicious.”

Yakumo spat out those words in disgust and rushed out of the classroom.

Seeing Fuyu with a sigh, I realized something.

“… Did you perhaps start to like Yakumo, Fuyuki?”

“―Was it that obvious?”

Looking back at me, Fuyuki had a wry smile on her face.

“I have confidence in my eyes on perceiving people.”

I know.

“That’s why, when I looked at Yakumo-san, I knew she is a good girl.”

Well, that as well, I know.

“To tell my real feelings, I just can’t seem to dislike the person who loves the same person as me. Although, I do think she is a nuisance from the depths of my heart… However, maybe we might come together on the same wavelength as well.”

Is that something gullible from me?

When asked that question, I shook my head to deny it.

Because I think I can even like that side of Fuyuki as well.

— But then again, I can’t just let myself be spoiled by her forever.

In the end, I’m the one who has to finish everything.

I have to get Yakumo to somehow give up on me.

No matter whatever way I put it, she will surely get hurt in the end.

However, I also understood the fact that it would not be not in Yakumo’s best interests if I were to continue dragging this out for longer now.

(… Let’s have a frank word with Yakumo tomorrow)

There was nothing good about dragging this forever.

I will have to tell myself.

And it was, from the next day itself.

That Yakumo—didn’t come to school again.
