Two days later, they finally arrived back to San Christobal.

Unlike other places, they met a team of heavily armed police officers at the highway road 10 miles from the city. The team is composed of several patrol units and twelve officers involved.

They were there to check the travelers and to guard the highway road. It is a boring job. After all, one team must guard the deserted road for at least eight hours.

In fact, the similar scene is happening at all four highway roads leading to four different direction from the city. It was the solid order from Sheriff Miguel. The city council approved it quickly and even provided material assistance to the officers on duty.

Actually, many cities and states are in the the state of confusion after they lost contact with central government. The first super earthquake like movement directly destroyed convenient modern communication methods.

Satellites strangely lost control. Many cable networks service stopped, including electricity.

It is a big disaster for everyone. But fortunately, the government of united states of America is composed of federal states and each state has own federal government and courts.

So, things in many places were quickly stabilized in several days. Although state governments were trying to get into contact with central government again, each attempts announced failures quickly.

Quickest way of using airplanes was quickly abandoned as many airplanes often crashed for mysterious reasons. Railways are found greatly damaged and they are unusable. The last option of using cars is also doubtful because news about damaged highway roads kept coming.

The experts had to pull their hairs to think about a quick way to get into contact with central government in order to know the situation.

After several days from the first super earthquake like movement, they finally found out a neglected thing in the warehouse.

Once useful but forgotten technology, wireless telegraph came out again and showed its brilliance to outside world. Dozen of letters with morse codes were sent out and received everyday by central government and state government.

Only at that time, they understood that they were not the sole victim and everyone was paralyzed together. The central government is also helpless.

So, state governments granted with complete autonomy before the central government could recover the lost control situation.

San Christobal has been in a different situation from other places during these days. As soon as the reports about strangely damaged roads appeared on desks, urgent meeting was held by the city council.

At the next day, almost all police officers were sent out to guard the highway roads. Nearby military base was directly summoned by the city mayor and placed in the city.

A bank was directly emptied and transformed into a temporary military base for a company of soldiers. It is a fully armed and mechanized company composed of nearly 300 soldiers. The commander is a captain named Wick Sheffield. He has a complete control over his men and moral is also good.

Peter looked at the familiar guy Luke speechlessly and asked, “You serious?”

Luke patted his belly and said, “Trust me. We are all buddies.”

Well, the small convoy of six vehicles were stopped by officers at the blockage. The officers’ purpose was to search the vehicles thoroughly before they could let these travelers enter their peaceful city.

After all, nobody could know whether someone would find trouble at this eventful time. So, these officers were also cautious. Even after Luke told them that Peter was son-in-law of their sheriff Miguel, they didn’t flinch back.

Actually, it was because only Luke was from central police station and the rest was from northern police station. If they were from central station and acquaintance people, they would just let him go away simply after a greeting. Because Peter’s name became quite famous after Cerriro town accident.

But of course, it was not well known city wide as the whole thing was kept as secret case.

Even so, rumors and gossips couldn’t be avoided. And it made Peter quite famous.

Peter felt that his cheap dad Miguel was making things big. Even Ben, who was listening at the side, was speechless.

It was not their fault to think so because no city on the way did something like this.

Luke got a chocolate donut from the donut box on co-pilot seat through the opened window, gave it to Flora and asked. When Flora saw someone giving her donut, she turned her head and looked at Peter. Only after seeing his approved nod, she took the donut and smiled at Luke.

Peter rubbed her hair gently and said, “Say thanks to uncle Luke.”

Flora looked at Luke for a few seconds before saying “Thanks” in a low voice.

Peter gave a satisfied smile and said, “This is Flora. She is my daughter.”

Luke winked at him and asked, “Does Tina know it?”

Peter rolled his eyes and said, “Don’t worry. I have already talked and they have no opinion.”

Then, he adjusted Flora position in his arms and asked calmly, “Come on. How long are your guys still going to search our vehicles? I cannot wait to quickly get back and reunite with Tina and Jenny.”

Luke shouted, “Guys, can you make it faster? My buddy is in a hurry to see his wife.”

Only after searching all the vehicles and people cleanly, officers stopped. Luke patted Peter’s shoulder and gave him a pass ticket with his sign.

“Thanks. Let’s meet at the bar later when you have time.”

Peter said and got in the co-pilot seat of pickup. Ben and the other guys also said goodbye to Luke one by one and got into the vehicles.

When they started the engine, Luke remembered something and shouted, “Allen! You kid, you have to treat the drinks tonight.”

Answer to him was just a middle finger out of one Landrover’s window and some dusts.

Luke speechlessly put down his just raised hand and turned back to chat with other officers at scene.

Then, he started to tell them about his previous QRT team and brag them about what they met in Cerriro town.

Chatting is the only way to pass the boring duty time. Staring at this bullshit empty and deserted highway road is very tiring. As for the secrecy contract he signed before, he has already forgotten about it. The officers were surprised by the story. However, they didn’t believe that it really happened. After all it sounded like fantasy.

Monsters? What is that? We must believe in science and power of bullets coming out of barrels.

But they strongly agreed that guns could solve everything. Even if they meet monsters in Luke’s bragging story, they believe that they would be able to solve these monsters with guns in their hands too.

After a while, the small convoy met another blockage just after they entered the city. But this one here is guarded by fully armed soldiers. Two HMMWV are parked at each side of the road. With two young looking soldiers holding the gatling guns on two vehicles, the team looks mighty and strong.

The sergeant on duty just looked at the pass ticket issued by Luke and waved his hand to allow the small convoy to pass.

Peter sighed in relief as these soldiers didn’t create difficulty to them. When they entered the city, they saw that everything was going on as usual. Pedestrians who were walking on sidewalk, old people chatting at coffee shops, people walking the dogs, and everything which seemed to be normal as usual made Peter to sigh in relief.

Then, the team parted their ways and Peter was dropped off in front of his house by Ben and Glenn.

Looking at the familiar house, Peter looked down at Flora and introduced, “This is our home.”
