Henrietta The Half-dead

Chapter 14 - Darkness - 14

When I looked at the door, the handle had been placed back into the wood. I was certain I hadn't just imagined I had broken it earlier. Grabbing hold, I easily opened the door while keeping my eyes on the entity. It stood still and watched me leave. The bastard knew more than I did.

I stepped into the doorway and immediately began falling. All around me was black and empty. I couldn't see a thing. Air rushed by me and my body could find no ground. If there was anything coming, the impact would be deadly.

About a minute or so passed before I came into something. My body hit what felt like liquid with very little force at all and I drifted a bit downward until I stood on ground I couldn't see. I didn't feel wet and I was still breathing normally; walked right into that black creature's trap.

What was I to do? Alone in an endless void, doomed to expire. I felt more irritated than anything. Instead of being eaten by a beast or crushed by the caves I was sitting idle, indefinitely. What a waste I had been.

As my anger grew I began to notice the darkness changing. Instead of the void there were now specs around me. Like a splattering of paint, there were now strange colors moving randomly in the distance like a night sky filled with tiny stars. I looked around for anything to make sense to me.

I turned a few times until I caught sight of a light much brighter than the others. It was white and was easy to pick out amongst the crowd. I ran towards it, strangely no longer held by the weight of the false water. The light grew bright as I ran towards it but I couldn't tell if any progress was being made. The ground below me still wasn't visible and there were no landmarks to go by.

I looked down briefly and opened my eyes wide as I noticed a giant red face underneath me. As if we were separated by a glass floor, the huge thing gazed at me with empty, black eyes and seemed to get more and more upset as time went on. I looked back towards the light but another giant face was in my way.

The face that attempted to block my path was awful to look at. Its skin was burnt and melting off. The eyes were boiling and leaking liquid down the sagging cheeks. Although I kept running, the face never got any closer to me. Neither face attempted to do anything but present themselves. The melting face annoyed me as it blocked my view of the light and I tried to shoo it away.

Responding to the wave of my hand, the face frowned and moved to the side. I could see the light again and it was much larger than before. Soon I was sure to reach it. I looked back down at the face below and it had been joined by many others. The same was true for the face that had been in front of me. Hundreds of faces all suffering different ailments watched me run but funneled a path towards the light. They were grotesque and horrific, but I refused to be stopped.
