Hiatus Gifting This Unfortunate Guy With Blessings

Chapter 11 - Magic items, deal with a devil, and card

I certainly didn't expect that getting equipment would be so quick. With so much time before sunset on my hand, I was beginning to think about what to do with my spare time after I would drop off Megumin in her house.

Thinking back, I haven't had much time to consider my current situation. I am really in another world, this is no dream.

By a set of coincidences, I even managed to get myself into a party. One with annoying Goddess, an explosion one-shot maniac, a weird crusader from tomorrow onwards and also with my countryman that choose the annoying goddess to come with him to this world.

Well, at least Aqua and Kazuma didn't seem to be affected by my face. Megumin even once said it looked cool when I was a mouse and I think I will be more scared of Darkness than she will be of my face…

Maybe I should beg Chris to let me into her party instead? These people are weird.

"Here you go."

As I neared Megumin's home she handed me the key so I could open the door. While stopping myself before commenting on her being able to do it herself I went into her house and asked where she wanted to be put down.

"The couch will be ok."

"Here you go. I am off then." I tried to leave since I wanted to check on something for my 'revenge' for the inn but Megumin quickly stopped me.

"Wait, won't you stay for tea? We are now teammates, we should get to know each other."

Well, I guess she had a point there so I just shrugged and sat on the chair opposite to the couch with a table between them.

"Ummm… I know I proposed it and I am the owner of the house, but … could you make that tea?" She stuttered while lying on the bed.

"Hey, you moved by yourself in the guild, right?" I asked suspiciously but Megumin quickly answered.

"That was because they made fun of explosion magic! I couldn't forgive them and that gave me strength! I seriously can't move anymore."

"I don't remember them making fun of your magic specifically…" Now that I think about it, adventurers were joking about her saying something about mouse goblin transformation… Maybe I should drop the issue.

"So, where do you keep the mugs, tea leaves and a pot for water or a kettle?"

"They are in the kitchen, the second cupboard from the right."

There was indeed everything needed for a tea. There was even a proper kettle. Half of my life I've used a pot for boiling water.

"How much of those leaves should I put in?"

"T-ten!"

Huh? How oddly specific. I put some even-ish ten leaves inside the kettle, poured some water and put it on some stove-like thing. There was a knob for the level of heat I thought but no matter what I did with it the fire didn't appear. Usually, you would have to push it or pull for a spark to ignite the gas but nothing like this has happened.

"Hey, how do you ignite the stove?"

"What stove? When you put everything in the kettle just push the green crystal on the side."

Ooooh. How curious. It's a magic gadget. It indeed started to heat up the water inside.

"Then what's that thing?" I asked while describing the stove-like appliance.

"That's the dish cleaner. If you put a dirty plate on it, it will get cleaned."

"Then what's the knob for?"

"You can choose the level of cleanness with it."

Level of cleanness? What does it even mean? How many bacteria are killed or what?

Trying not to sound like a country bumpkin even more than I already sounded I dropped the questions. When the water boiled I poured the liquid inside two mugs while looking curiously around the kitchen but I didn't spot any more weird appliances.

"You bought those magic items yourself or-"

"They were already here when I moved in. The landlady is keeping those things operational."

Figures, if Megumin could afford those then she probably wouldn't be starved for 3 days straight. But that seems like a really luxurious thing for a low-price housing.

I put one mug in front of Megumin and one in front of me. Umm… how will she drink that? She seemed to desperately try to sit down but with no effect. I helped her up and she started to sip on the tea with her wobbly arms. After making sure she could hold her mug properly I sat opposite to her to drink mine as well.

I then noticed that my tea was perfectly transparent. Was that some kind of special tea? I gave it a sip.

"This is water."

"What do you mean? Since ancient times people have been calling water brewed on leaves a tea. This is proper tea."

What kind of leaves are those? They kinda remind me of those from a tree we passed a street ago. Surely that was not a 'tea tree'! I hope at least that this won't cause a tragic accident in the toilet tomorrow…

"You drank this in the past?"

"Yes, I drink it every day, it's very delicious."

I didn't know if I should feel relief for my bowels or sorry for this poor girl. Although I never had much myself I at least could afford a proper tea and food in my home back on Earth.

Megumin put down her mug and looked at me seriously.

"I wanted to thank you for saving me the other day."

Oh, right… the cat is out of the bag. She saw me turn into a mouse when Aqua tried to coerce me into apologizing to her.

"It's nothing much. I just accidentally happened to be there. Everyone else would do the same in my place."

I didn't know what else to say. It really was a chain of coincidences. I managed to save her thanks to my power acquiring goblin form and-

"By the way, are you a mouse that evolved into a goblin that in turn evolved further into a human? Does that mean humans evolved from mice?!"

What?

"That's some major news! We have to tell this to the world-"

I stopped Megumin before she could go into a frenzy of ideas.

"No, I was born human."

This answer didn't seem to appease Megumin so she kept looking at me with a gaze demanding a continuation. I would use my power in future adventures with her so I guessed there was no reason to beat around the bush.

"I got a skill that lets me borrow the skills and form from a creature that I had enough physical contact with."

"Who taught you such a skill?! How many points or how many years it took to learn it?"

Megumin kept on firing questions that were kinda hard to answer. Chris said that the reincarnation business is only known for a small group but she didn't say it's forbidden to speak about it at all. I decided to answer kinda truthfully but still without mentioning reincarnation.

"I received it in my dream from an angel."

Megumin's curious gaze changed quickly into a suspicious one.

"Are you sure it was an angel? It's the first time I hear angels giving skills to people. There are some legends about Gods giving aid to people in dire straits, but not angels. Are you sure it wasn't a devil in disguise and you sold your soul to him?"

I stopped for a bit under Megumin's doubtful gaze but soon I remembered what Chris has told me. Unless Chris was a devil herself it was certain that I didn't pact with a devil and she surely isn't- Stop looking at me like that, Megumin!

"Yes, I am sure of it! 100%"

"Mhmm" Was the only answer I received from her as she sipped her 'tea' while looking at me with an unwavering gaze.

"Anyways, how does it work. Did that 'angel' explain how to use it?"

"She said she is new to this stuff and only explained the basics on how to use it. When I first time 'met' you I was in the mouse form and I couldn't turn back to be human since I hadn't registered 'human' form yet. I need to experiment with it to know all the quirks. That dream happened recently so I don't know how everything works yet. "

"So you sold your soul for an only basic explanation? Poor you."

"I haven't sold my soul to anyone!"

She now sipped loudly while looking me straight in the eyes. This girl!

"So, how many creatures can you transform into?" She continued.

I used a mental command [List] to check on how things looked.

>Human

>Mouse

>Goblin

>Giant Toad

>Crimson Demon

Oh, I can now transform into a Crimson Demon! It must have been unlocked when I was lugging Megumin around. What does it even mean? She doesn't look too different from a normal human girl. Maybe besides those red eyes of her.

"I can transform into a human, mouse, goblin, giant toad and a Crimson Demon." I answered truthfully.

"You can change into a crimson demon?!" Megumin suddenly shot up from her seat but just as suddenly tumbled back to the couch without any energy.

I didn't know why she was raising such a fuss.

"Yep. By the way, how is Crimson Demon different from a human? You don't seem that different besides your eyes and your nam-"

"You got something against my name? Let's hear it."

Ooops. I stepped on the mine. She tried to sound very threatening but I just sat there silently waiting for an explanation while she was lying unmoving on a couch.

After a few seconds of silence, Megumin sighed and started explaining. Supposedly they don't differ that much from humans but they all have great magic potential. They are hailed as the most powerful force of mages and are the only reason Demon King didn't destroy the world yet, according to her words…

Well, I could belive them being adept at magic, seeing Megumin's powerful explosion but the latter part sounded like boasting so I didn't think much about it.

"If you can change into a Crimson Demon then I am sure you can also learn explosion magic! Think about-"

"Ummm, my job is Ranger, so I wouldn't be able to learn explosion magic… I think."

I was new to these things and haven't had time to research but I've heard that there are some job restrictions on skills.

"And my intelligence and magic stats are average at best so I wouldn't be able even if I wanted-"

"Don't lose hope!" Megumin shouted, trying to act encouragingly. "Where there's a will, there's a way!" She shouted that with all her might but seemed stumped anyways.

I mean… even if I could learn explosion magic I don't know if I would if that's the state one ends up in. I looked at Megumin again trying her hardest to sit straight. When she finally managed to (with my help) she looked as if she was in deep thought.

"What happens to your adventurer card and your stats when you transform?" She asked after some thinking.

"No idea." I answered truthfully. I never thought about checking it, but in my defense... I had that card for only one day and that power for two and a half.

I took out my card on the table and looked at it. It was exactly the same even after me transforming into a giant toad or a mouse today.

By the way, where my things go when I transform? How am I able to think normally in mouse form, they have smaller brains, right? Why each form has those ugly scars on my face?

When I actually started to think about my power then fewer and fewer things made sense. Angel-san, why did you tell me only about those two commands - [List] and [Imitate] -, there are a dozen more things needing an explanation!

"Then transform into something else and let's see."

That was indeed a good way to check. Without further ado, I transformed into a mouse and looked at the card lying on the table.

It seemed like things not directly on me weren't mysteriously vanishing.

The card was there but there were some unintelligible signs on it now. I couldn't make out anything from it. When I changed back into a human the card also turned back to normal.

"Huh." x2

"Now try changing into a Crimson Demon."

I also wondered what would happen then so I did as Megumin suggested.
