Chapter 8 “The Visiting Monster Hunters Part 1”

Dawn got up early the next day. After changing out of his pajamas, he was ready to make breakfast when he discovered there was already someone else in the kitchen. It was Shadow. The catling had been working in there to make food for the three of them since sunrise.

This left the young man staring blankly at the warm picture. No one would ever bother stepping into this shared kitchen if it was in the past. They always had their own portable cooker inside the room; as a result, none of the tenants could get past the initial layer of estrangement despite living under the same roof.

But now, that’s no longer the case. Instead, Dawn’s heart was tingling with a homeliness of the past where his parents were still around….

“Good morning, breakfast is congee today. You won’t mind, right?” Shadow immediately greets the guy after seeing his entrance.

“That’s fine, I’m not picky.” Dawn responds with a sweet smile of his own and notices a missing member, “Is the hamster not awake yet?”

“Not yet. Do you want me to call that hamster?”

“No, just put it on the table and wait for him to come out on his own.” Dawn rejects the idea because they had plenty to do today.

First, it’s buying a cell phone for this lady, plus various daily necessities before showing her around the neighborhood.

I hope everything goes well…..

It’s then, from out of the blue, a loud thumping knock interrupted their morning conversation.

“Who is so early?” Dawn didn’t delay and quickly went to answer the front door. When he opened it, two men and a woman stood there with a strange look on their faces examining him. Dawn was sure they were not from around here because he didn’t get any recollection.

“Do you need something?” If they’re not locals, that could only mean these three are salespeople trying to con the residences into a contract or something.

It’s not uncommon to hear stories of an old granny getting signed up for services they never used. As a result, his wariness immediately got flagged to be on the lookout for anything unusual. Sure enough, his sight quickly fell upon the delicate-looking crossbow hanging around the lady’s waist.

I just had to jinx it, didn’t I? Me and my foul mouth, always saying stuff I shouldn’t…

He didn’t forget what Boink told him about monster hunters. This setup, this arrangement, there’s no way they’re not here to investigate his home!

“Is it him…?”

While Dawn was looking at the other party, the other party was also examining the house owner with wary eyes.

“He’s not full of Qi or bloodthirst, nor can I sense any foulness in the air so the rumors are probably wrong.”

“I’ll try again.” The female monster hunter suddenly stepped forward and asked, “Little brother, are you intrigued by the crossbow around our waists?”

A “thud” sound dropped in Dawn’s heart because he realized his expression had given himself away earlier.

He wanted to deny it out of reflex but immediately suppressed the idea. Denying it would only make the other party grow more suspicious, which would only worsen and expose his two tenants by that point.

Keep calm you idiot, don’t lose your cool and think of something….

Making an embarrassed smile, Dawn eagerly replied, “I was just thinking how well made that crossbow is. I didn’t mean anything else. If you don’t mind, can you name a price? Or tell me where you bought it? I’m going to be attending the city’s ComicCon in October. My cosplay is going to be Van Helsing so that crossbow would work perfectly with my costume.”

A good excuse. If the other part was willing to sell the crossbow then they are unlikely to be monster hunters. Vice-versa, if they aren’t then Dawn could be sure they are without raising any suspicion.

Sure enough, the three monster hunters were speechless for a while. Looking at the young man like he’s insane, they couldn’t believe the audacity of this guy. For one, these weapons aren’t something you find in a common parlor shop – they’re all specially made by master smiths with added blessings on the silver tip of the arrows. Not only was the cost extremely high, even if they did want to sell their weapon, no ordinary citizen would be able to afford it anyway.
