Chapter 3 - Bus Route

There was a bus driver who would always take his morning route, just driving around to the locations he was told. The morning journeys had there ups and downs which was a pretty natural as any job can become stressful or well uncomfortable to a certain degree, but the driver made do and did his job.

Day after day going around and picking up passengers with the odd smile and nice little thank you at each stop, but soon there was a young girl that got not the bus, sometimes she'd be there for 7:30 but soon started to get the 7:45 every day, it was quite nice as the girl would ask the driver how he was and give him a smile.

The girl would continue to come on the bus for weeks and weeks, it made the drivers' day as she'd tell him all these cool stories, it soon came apparent that the girl was struggling with high school and making friends.

"Always be yourself!" was what the driver said to her.

Those words just stuck inside the girls head, and she would say them every day to herself, but one day the driver came along to the same stop where the girl would get on, it was now 7:50, and she wasn't there. He waited 2 more minutes and then heard the girls voice.

"Wait! I'm here!" She huffed just coughing a little into a handkerchief before getting on and scanning her ticket.

The bus driver smiled and gave her a friendly scolding about almost missing her bus and it seemed to make her laugh and just smile, it was nice, and he seemed to laugh a little too.

As more time went on, the bus driver noticed it was about a year now since that friendly, bubbly girl got on his bus, but she soon started to have shorter hair as weeks went on. The man didn't want to be rude and ask why she got it shorter in such little time, but soon enough he popped the question.

"Your hair is shorter again, did you not like your last haircut?" the bus driver asked in a friendly but not obvious manner.

"Yep... It wasn't the way I wanted it! Have a good day!" she said softly before sitting down just doing her thing while the driver set off on his route.

Eventually, the girl wasn't on the bus, she missed it a few times and the driver wouldn't hear her little voice call out any more, she wouldn't ask him how he was, and he couldn't return the friendly question. The mornings seemed sadder and eventually, the driver didn't seem to really enjoy work like he used too.

The girl was very nice, and she always made the day feel golden, like you could concur the world and make others feel something positive but sadly so, the driver didn't know what happened with the girl who only treated everyone with sheer kindness.

"Morning Driver." A women maybe in her late 30's said softly just holding her ticket under the scanner.

"Morning, dear" he said in a friendly tone before noticing that she looked like the little girl, he smiled before the women spoke up once more.

"Are you Eddie? Not to be rude, driver" she asked with a tone of slight sadness.

"Uh... Yes, that's me. Do I know you from somewhere?" the driver asked as the bus was empty and well it was the 3rd stop, meaning, no one was gonna get on till the next 2 or 3 stops.

".. Well, no. But my daughter, Anna. She told me about your little talks every day and told me about how much you helped her get through..." the women paused just wiping her eyes softly.

"Oh Anna, I haven't seen her around, your daughter is so kind hearted and very friendly. But I can't help but ask... Get through what?" the man seemed to feel a slight bit of sadness and worry was over him.

"My daughter had cancer. It wasn't hard to notice as her hair soon went away, she said that you didn't judge her and treated her with respect which made her feel so happy. I know it's your job to treat passengers with respect but, thank you so much for making my daughter feel happy." the women started to cry and just seemed to have a little breakdown.

The driver's eyes watered as he didn't even realize that the little girl was dealing with such an illness, she seemed so happy and always friendly, there wasn't a bad bone in her body. It pained him to know such a kind soul had gone through something like that, it wasn't fair.

"I am so sorry for your lost, Ma'am. I hope she was happy, and I am really sorry that such a kind and friendly soul was lost to such an illness, but she was a fighter. And you should be so proud" the driver said softly just giving her a smile and a tissue.

The women thanked him dearly and just took a seat, the route today would be filled with sadness and pain. It wasn't easy to deal with, but he seems to blame himself for not noticing.

The young girl had been dealing with the hospital appointments and working with the doctors to try to treat her cancer more effectively but, the treatment didn't work and sadly she was losing time day by day.

The days when she was off was when she was too sick to get out of bed and the day she was late, she had been up all night at hospital but still wanted to go and see the driver and try her best for him.

Her only friend through the whole process.

The one person who believed that she was able to get through every day, the one person to make her day.
