13. What is That? It Smells Delicious!

When Ji Ran bickered with Granny Lu, all he thought about was to win. Now that he had won the argument, he saw that Lu Zhen was walking silently side by side with him. Ji Ran couldn’t help feeling guilty. He kept peeking at Lu Zhen out of the corner of his eye, but all he saw was that there were no changes in Lu Zhen’s facial expressions, and he couldn’t see if Lu Zhen was unhappy or not.

As he was busy sneaking glances at Lu Zhen, Ji Ran didn’t pay attention to the road. He tripped over the threshold and almost fell on the ground. Thanks to Lu Zhen who acted fast and grabbed Ji Ran’s arm in time, Ji Ran didn’t hit the ground head-on.

“Why did you keep peeking at at me? Watch your step.” Lu Zhen sighed, “I’m not angry.”

“Haha…” Ji Ran saw that Lu Zhen looked like he meant what he said. While he felt relieved, he was even more embarrassed, “Well, I didn’t mean to bicker with that old woman. But I couldn’t control myself when I was in that kind of situation.”

“I’m really not angry,” Now that they were back to their own yard and no one was watching them, Lu Zhen took the basket from Ji Ran, carried it on his back, and strode into the house.

Ji Ran wasn’t carrying anything now. He quickly took off his shoes and rubbed his sore toes. And when the pain was eased, he quickly put on his shoes and ran after Lu Zhen.

“Put them all in the hut,” Ji Ran said as he ran, “We need to do some cleaning and find a place to store everything. And I’ll need to return the basket to that villager later.”

Without letting Ji Ran do anything, Lu Zhen quickly tidied up a corner. He found a wooden board, put the goods on the board in the corner and took out all the things from the basket.

Lu Zhen did all the work silently, and he didn’t even give Ji Ran a chance to help, so Ji Ran could only stand there and watch. And the more he watched, the more obvious it became. Lu Zhen said that he was not angry, and he also didn’t look like he was angry, but in fact, he was not happy in his heart. It was quite clear now that Lu Zhen liked bottling up his feelings and that he didn’t like to talk about how he felt.

Just as Ji Ran was thinking about how to break the silence, Lu Zhen suddenly opened his mouth, “I should be the one who feels sorry about it. Had it not been for me, you would have married a woman, had babies, and lived a normal life. And you wouldn’t have sufferred the humiliation of being called a widow while you’re a man.”

“Huh?” Ji Ran was stunned at first; then he was embarrassed. “Uh…” He really didn’t know how to respond.

Lu Zhen didn’t seem to mind. He picked up the chicken and stood up, “Let’s go and barbecue it. Today you haven’t eaten anything yet, right?”

Ji Ran had picked the feather and washed the intestines of the chicken by the river, so all he needed to do right now was to cook it on a fire.

Lu Zhen didn’t stop after saying that. He turned around and went to the makeshift kitchen in the empty space behind the house.

Now that Lu Zhen mentioned it, Ji Ran felt that he was quite hungry. Ji Ran was a man of principle. Early this morning, Granny Lu made a scene here in his yard and he knew that the noodles he had eaten were made from ingredients stolen from Granny Lu. Ever since then, he had not eaten anything that belonged to the Lu Family. He hadn’t eaten any breakfast and had been busy for so long. He had long been hungry. So, without any hesitation, he took the salt and a handful of washed mushrooms and followed Lu Zhen.

He put the mushrooms on the stone next to the stove. Then he got up to carry the dried firewood out. The two were busy making a fire and barbecuing the chicken.

In fact, cooking in the open air had its own advantages. For one, it wasn’t so smoky. Although the seasoning was simple and there was no cumin, chili powder, sesame oil, etc., their were cooking a wild and free-range chicken, which was not polluted in any way. Nor was it given added hormones or fed any fodder. The smell of the chicken alone was so good that it made people involuntarily swallow.

The couple were enjoying their barbecue, but the Lu Family who were smelling it without a chance to have a taste. They were very unhappy when they new the little widow had got barbecue chicken to eat.

“What is that? It smells delicious!” Leng Xianglian was pregnant and she was always hungry. So, when she smelled the aroma of the chicken, she couldn’t help but sniff hard.

“It’s chicken,” Lu Changgeng, a grown man, also sniffed.

The rest of the Lu Family had the same reaction either obviously or obscurely.

Actually it was perfectly understandable for them to have this intense craving for chicken. And Leng Xianglian was carrying a baby, so it made even more sense that she felt tempted by the smell of it. As for the rest of them, except for the Chinese New Year, it was rare for them to even have any meat in their meals. Plus, Granny Lu had always been stingy. When she cooked, she boiled everything with water, so they never had anything that was cooked with oil, let alone meat. It was never a problem when they couldn’t smell the aroma of cooked meat. Now that they were surrounded by the tempting smell, their stomaches started to rumble uncontrollably.

Although it was considered ill-mannered for the adults to react like that, it was still understandable. However, the younger ones started to shout the moment they knew that the smell came from barbecued chicken, especially Lu Ziqian, the youngest son of Granny Lu’s third son, whose shouting was the loudest.

“Father, Mother, I want to eat meat! I want to eat chicken!”

Meanwhile, Granny Lu remained calm this whole time. Her hand, which was holding a wooden spatula, kept moving without even a slight pause. And when she was done, she specially left a portion in the wok.

“Mother, why did you leave a portion in the wok?” Gao Hui, who was helping Granny Lu burn the woods in the stove, couldn’t help but ask curiously when she saw Granny Lu doing that.

“Lu Zhen’s wife is not used to eating with the whole family. This is for him. You will take it to him later,” Granny Lu said while being busy getting the food ready, “After all, he is a member of our family now.”

Gosh, did the sun rise from the west today? What Granny Lu did was incredibly unbelievable!

Gao Hui, who was extremely shocked, looked at Granny Lu as if she was looking at an alien.
