15. Drool Over It

Translator: Annsmiley

Ji Ran looked at Gao Hui with a complicated expression. He was actually not a stingy person, especially when it came to food. In his previous life, he had fed many stray cats and dogs, let alone a person, but he didn’t like how the Lu Family treated other people. He was new here and they tried to push him aside. He was wronged and accused of stealing in front of so many neighbors. He wasn’t a saint, so he couldn’t just forgive them like that. And if he did, they wouldn’t think that he was generous and forgiving. Instead they would think that it was okay to treat and bully him like that.

However…

Though Ji Ran did not like Gao Hui, so far she hadn’t done anything to harm him. This morning, apart from Granny Lu’s youngest son who he hadn’t seen, the whole family were there. Even Leng Xianglian, who had a big pregnant belly, went to open the door so that the neighbors would be able to see what was going on. At that time, he noticed that Gao Hui was busy keeping an eye on her child aside. She was the only one who didn’t get involved in any way.

Besides, it was true that he couldn’t eat up the whole roast chicken. So it wouldn’t hurt to share it with her. And he would be more than happy to make a fool out of people in the Lu Family.

With that in mind, Ji Ran smiled and put the bowl and the chopsticks on the stone stool. Then he picked up the roast chicken, broke off a drumstick and handed it to Gao Hui, “Take this drumstick as a special treat for the kids.”

The kids could share the drumstick together, but those adults could only watch and drool over it as they ate. Haha! That was exactly the plan of Ji Ran.

Though Ji Ran was being generous, he was, in fact, getting revenge.

Gao Hui’s face froze. A drumstick was all that she ended up getting?! How unbelievable! The roast chicken was so big and yet he only gave her a small drumstick. It was not even close to enough for the kids, let alone the adults. Sigh, if they shredded it, maybe all of the family members would have a taste of it. She wanted to have it all to herself, but it was Granny Lu, her mother-in-law, who told her to take the food here. And Granny Lu would definitely make a scene if she didn’t get anything from it. Anyway, she didn’t tell Ji Ran that it was Granny Lu who told her to come here. She could take this chance to form a good relationship with him, and she was sure that she would benefit from it in the future.

With that in mind, Gao Hui didn’t feel like complaining anymore.

And this was why, she, Gao Hui, was wiser than Leng Xianglian, who, in comparison, was brainless. Leng Xianglian thought that she was superior just because she was carrying a baby. She forgot that she wasn’t the only one who had babies in this house. Leng Xianglian had had two kids, and yet she acted like it was the first time she had got pregnant. Humph! This morning, Granny Lu scolded Gao Hui because she didn’t do anything when they were confronting Ji Ran and Granny Lu praised Leng Xianglian, which made Gao Hui feel bad. And now? Granny Lu could only ask her to help break the ice between her and Ji Ran.

“Gosh, Sister, you’re being so nice. Well, I don’t know what to say.” As she spoke politely, Gao Hui did not hesitate to wrap up the drumstick with a handkerchief. She held it into her arms and said, “Sister, enjoy your meal. I’ll come back to collect the bowl and chopsticks later.”

After Gao Hui left, Ji Ran didn’t pretend to be proud. He tore some chicken and threw it into the bowl. Then he picked the bowl up and started eating.

“I thought you wouldn’t eat the food given by her,” Lu Zhen handed over the roasted mushrooms.

Ji Ran didn’t have a free hand, so he took a bite while the mushroom skewer was still in Lu Zhen’s hand, “I exchanged a drumstick for it, so why wouldn’t I eat it?” Actually to Ji Ran, what mattered wasn’t that he traded a drumstick for it, but that the roast chicken alone was too greasy and eating it with rice and vegetables would be better. As for the rest of the chicken, he could eat it tonight, “Mmm, the mushroom is delicious. Let me take another bite.”

So Lu Zhen continued to feed him.

“No more roast mushrooms. I’ve had enough. We’ll dry the rest and put them away, and later we can make chicken and mushroom stew.” Ji Ran gulped half a bowl of rice. Not only did he eat up the boiled vegetables and mushrooms, he also had most of the chicken. Although the brown rice didn’t taste as good as plain rice, when eaten together with roast chicken and mushrooms, it wasn’t that bad either. The only problem was that he ate it too quickly and he almost choked himself. And he only got more comfortable after he had a bout of hiccups. And he added, “We’ll go to the mountain again this afternoon and we’ll hunt some wild animals and trade them for some money. And we’ll buy all the kitchenware and some furniture. Otherwise I’ll have to have barbecues every day. And that won’t be healthy for me.”

“Okay,” Whatever Ji Ran said, Lu Zhen obeyed completely.

A thought crossed Ji Ran’s mind and he suddenly approached Lu Zhen, “You know, something has been bothering me for a long time. I’ve checked it. The big pottery vat in our house is covered in cobwebs. There is not even one single drop of water in it. So when I took the bath yesterday, where did you get the water?”

Lu Zhen paused and he looked at Ji Ran as if he were an idiot, “Of course I got it from them.”

Ji Ran, “…” ‘Well, should I be glad that they didn’t notice that the water is gone? Otherwise, I would be accused of stealing water from them, and just the thought of it makes me feel bad.’
