4. The First Living Person He Met

Translator: Annsmiley

Though Ji Ran knew that the woman was trying to pick a fight with him, he still felt he was saved. ‘Who cares what she is doing here. I’m finally with someone who is alive!’

Ji Ran walked over with a smile on his face. “Uh…may I have your name?”

Obviously, the woman did not expect Ji Ran to respond to her provocation so friendly, so she was stunned.

Ji Ran continued to ask, “The edict said that the man I’m married to was conferred the title of General-in-chief of Agile Cavalry after he died…”

Actually, what Ji Ran meant to say was that since the man was a general, why did he not have a big mansion? Instead, his family was living in remote thatched sheds  However, before he could ask, the woman rolled her eyes at him.

“Oh, come on, that’s just a nominal title. Do you really see yourself as a general’s wife?! If it wasn’t for the fact that in the battlefield, he happened to stand between the Emperor and the sword and saved the Emperor’s life, his death would be nothing and he would be lucky if his body didn’t decay in the wilderness! And of course, this marriage between you two wouldn’t have happened, and he wouldn’t have been given a reward! Yes, he did get a reward, but he didn’t get to enjoy it. What a life!”

The woman refuted with a long speech. Then she threw the shells of the sunflower seeds on the ground and with one hand holding her belly and the other hand supporting her back, she turned around and walked away without waiting for Ji Ran’s response.

Ji Ran glared at the woman and he only realized what he had been through after she went quite far, and he suddenly felt hopeless. Great! The dead general didn’t have a mansion. Instead, he lived in remote and shabby sheds with a bunch of poor relatives. Ji Ran met two of them this morning, and neither of them was friendly to him. And instead of getting the answer to his question, he was spat on by a woman. It couldn’t get any worse!

Ji Ran didn’t dare go back to the room, and he didn’t see anyone else around who he could ask about this family. So he decided to show himself around the farmhouses. What he found was that although the houses all had thatched roofs, they covered quite a wide area, and although all houses were connected, they were clearly separated by walls.

On his tour, he found that the whole place was very quiet. The people who lived here must have gone to the farm.

Ji Ran was new here. He was not familiar with this place, and he didn’t know what to do, and he didn’t dare to go back to the room. So he decided to stop wandering around. He found a clean stone and sat down on it, and he started to think about what had happened and what he would do next.

From the looks of it, he could tell that this family was very poor. And from what the woman told him, the dead general was rewarded by the Emperor. However, now that the general was just a spirit tablet, all his reward must have been taken by his poor relatives.

“Sigh!” With that in mind, Ji Ran couldn’t help but sigh, “Forget about it. I am capable of making my own fortunes. I can’t let something like that beat me down. Though I’m not living in a mansion, I can still be a landlord!”

The more he thought about it, the more hopeful Ji Ran became. It was fine that no one was friendly to him here. He could always ask the people outside. In a close-knit community like this where people gossiped about almost everything, he believed that he would find someone who could at least answer part of his question if not the whole.

Having made up his mind, Ji Ran immediately stood up. He was about to walk towards the exit when he suddenly felt chills behind him. He didn’t know if it was an illusion, but vaguely, he heard a man sneer.

However, when he turned back, he saw no one there.

Although the voice was soft, it was too familiar, so familiar that it made his hair stand on end. When he thought of the possibility that it might come from the ghost he was married to, Ji Ran’s legs trembled uncontrollably. Though he was standing in the sun in broad daylight, he had goosebumps all over him and all his hairs stood upright.

Anyway, Ji Ran’s whole body became stiff and he didn’t dare to move at all.

After a long time, he plucked up his courage and shouted, “Who?! Who is hiding there? If you have the guts, come out and confront me personally!”

The moment he said that, a black cat jumped down from the roof and fell on Ji Ran like a black cannonball. Ji Ran, who didn’t see that coming, was knocked down by the cat. “Thud” and Ji Ran fell hard on the ground.

“Meow!”

Before Ji Ran could scream in pain, the black cat meowed frightenedly. As it screamed, it kicked Ji Ran’s face and ran away, leaving Ji Ran lying and feeling dizzy on the ground, and all that he had in mind was: Damn it! The F*cking transmigration!
