Chapter 112

“I do not know you.”

Gaius growled.

“When would I have ever met such an unheard-of bastard?”

“Really?”

Otto smirked.

“No. You should know better.”

“Know what?”

“Don’t you know Kairos?”

“Kai… Ross?”

“Don’t you know Kairos the Cannibal Emperor? You should know him very well.”

“Bullshit.”

Gaius gave a warped grin.

“Kairos died hundreds of years ago. He’s already dead….”

“How does it make sense that bastard Argonne is alive and kicking, and yet not Kairos?”

“……!”

“How does it feel to have the Kairos you’ve been hearing about in front of you?”

Gaius sobered at Otto’s remark, then looked up at Kairos again.

“You are a descendant of that Argonne bastard, is that correct?”

Kairos glared at Gaius with eyes that glowed with the color of demonic fire.

“Are you saying that you really are Kairos the Cannibal Emperor?”

Then.

– How dare you!

– Calling His Majesty that?

– I will tear you to pieces!

The ghosts of Agatho, Hildegard, and Maximus burst into existence, pressing down on Gaius.

“Heh, heheh!”

Gaius saw the ghosts of Agatho, Hildegard, and Maximus, who he had only heard about in stories, and he lifted his head.

There was quite a bit of information about Kairos and his entourage in the records that had been secretly passed down through the Oberhauser family, and the portraits bore a striking resemblance to those of the Wraith Knights.

“Hahaha.”

Kairos leaned in close to Gaius, his tongue dangling.

“A cannibal emperor… so, how was it to see me, the cannibal emperor, in person?”

“Ugh! Ahhhh!”

“How would you like it if I roasted your arm on the spot, it wouldn’t kill you anyway, would it?”

Kairos looked back at Otto.

“As long as we slap some painkillers on him beforehand and worry about bleeding and such, it shouldn’t matter, right? You wouldn’t mind if I roasted both of his legs instead of just one arm?”

Otto took Kairos’s bluff in stride.

“Let me know when you think about it, and just grill them right now while you’re at it. I’m curious, too, you know, it’s not every day I get to see a human leg being roasted.”

“Hehehe! Good! All right!”

Kairos looked around.

“I’m going to roast a whole pair of this guy’s legs on the spot, so get me some charcoal now!”

“Yes!”

The soldiers fetched charcoal from the bonfires scattered about.

“Can’t you be quiet, you bastards! Tie him up tight, so it’ll be easier to roast him!”

“Ahh! Aaaaaah! D-don’t do this! Aaaaaah! P-please! Such a terrible thing… Aaaaaah!”

Gaius struggled frantically as the soldiers tried to bind his body tightly and place one leg over the burning charcoal.

The thought of being roasted alive and having his body parts eaten was so terrifying that he was on the verge of going completely insane.

“Do you think it would taste better with salt on it, or maybe some barbecue seasoning….”

Kairos grabbed a glass of something and started talking about seasonings for cannibalization.

“Mmph!”

Gaius screamed, his eyes rolling back in his head.

He passed out from sheer terror.

“Eh.”

Otto grumbled as if he had lost steam when Gaius fainted.

“It’s no fun when you’re already out cold, you little shit.”

Otto kicked the unconscious Gaius in the head and scowled.

“You’ve got a shitty attitude. For someone who’s supposed to accomplish great things, he’s got such a weak mind.”

“In any case, his mental strength is…”

Otto shook his head at Kairos’ condescending emphasis on mental strength.

‘It’s even more absurd because it’s real.’

Kairos’ mental strength was something Otto recognized, so he couldn’t refute it even if he wanted to.

“What are we going to do with him?”

“Lock him up and get the information out of him. He’s a crucial member of the Oberhauser family, and he’ll know a lot about Argonne.”

“Not a bad idea.”

“I’ll keep him alive for now. He might come in handy someday.”

“Hmm?”

“We could use him as a hostage, or we could brainwash him and send him to the Great Argonne for information but for now, I’m not going to kill him.”

“Hmph. You’re despicable.”

“You’re welcome.”

Otto shrugged, as if Kairos’s praise was nothing compared to his own.

‘I haven’t even started yet, hehehe.’

Otto grinned deviously, knowing full well how wicked he could be when he set his mind to it.

“So what are we going to do now?”

“We’ve got the valuable target alive. We’ve secured the laborers’ escape, so there’s nothing left for us to do.”

“So it’s time to rob his grave, is that it?”

“Let’s see what we can find. I’m curious.”

Otto was curious to see what was in the tomb of the Great Emperor Argonne.

He’d only heard that Julius(Emperor Argonne) had dug the tomb when he’d played the game, but this was the first time he’d ever had the chance to see it for himself.

“Let’s go.”

“Wait.”

“What are we waiting for? We already found the entrance to the tomb.”

“I said wait.”

“Why do you ask me to wait?”

“Oh for fuck’s sake!”

Otto was irked.

“You are in such a hurry. Why don’t you be quiet?”

“What are we waiting for, I want to get to…. right now!”

“We don’t even know what’s in there, but we should at least be prepared.”

“Huh?”

“We should at least prepare some food and potions. Plus, we need to get some rest.”

“It’s all about mental strength….”

“Wait.”

Otto rubbed his eyes and gave Kairos instructions before heading to the nearest tent.

‘We’ll get some sleep for three or four hours, gather our things, and then hit the trail.’

Otto and his companions hadn’t eaten or slept much in the past few days, and they were in pretty bad shape.

They were much better off than the average laborer, but they were still human beings, and it was natural for them to get tired.

About six hours later.

“Ugh. I’m beat.”

Otto woke up feeling as if he’d been battered all over.

It was no wonder his whole body ached from sleeping in a shabby tent, shivering in the cold, huddled over a single fire, instead of in a warm, comfortable bed.

“Zzzzzzz!!! Snooooorreeeere!!”

He looked over to see Kairos lying on the field bed, his mouth open, drooling and snoring heavily.

“… Hey, why are you sleeping with your eyes open?”

Otto looked up to see Kairos sleeping with his eyes open.

The guy’s sleeping posture was unbelievable.

“Hey, wake up.”

“Zzzzz! Zzzz!”

“Wake up.”

“Snore~ Zzz…. ZZZzzzzzz~ Zzz..”

“Hey! aren’t you going to wake up?”

He even tried shaking him to wake him up, but Kairos just wouldn’t stir.

Despite his words of mental strength, Kairos was actually very tired.

“How come you can’t wake up even after being kicked?”

Otto stuck his tongue out at Kairos, who couldn’t wake up from a kick in the ass.

“Eh. I’ll have to go to that Argonne bastard’s grave by myself.”

“…Argonne?”

Kairos’s eyes snapped open as if he was being struck by a blow.

“… This is indeed Pavlov’s dog.”

Otto was stunned to see Kairos, who hadn’t moved, open his eyes as soon as he heard the word “Argonne”.

With Kairos awake, Otto grabbed his supplies and equipment and headed to the tomb of the Great Emperor Argonne.

After passing through a passageway that must have been nearly three kilometers long, the interior of the tomb came into view.

“This is… a tomb?”

Otto stuck his tongue out at the sight of the inner chamber.

The tomb was as bright as daylight, thanks to the thousands of spirit stones embedded in the ceiling, and the view was spectacular.

Even though more than two-thirds of the tomb was crumbling, it was the size of a World Cup stadium.

It could have been an imperial palace.

That wasn’t all.

“There’s even an army.”

Stone statues of soldiers and knights stood in rows and columns, guarding the tomb of the Great Emperor Argonne.

There must have been more than five thousand of them.

“This is definitely the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang.”

“Qin Shihua, who is that?”

“There is such a lunatic.”

“Hmm?”

“He’s been searching for an elixir of immortality since the beginning of his reign, mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people to build this massive tomb. If you think about how much national power is wasted on a tomb like this, it’s nothing short of ridiculous. When you die, it’s all the same. What’s the point of building these tombs if you’re going to die and enjoy some sort of glorification? If you have the money, use it to improve the country.”

“Hmm. You have a point.”

“That Argonne bastard is really something.”

Otto didn’t understand why either the Emperor Qin or the Great Emperor Argonne would build such a huge tomb.

Perhaps it was because he was a modern man, but to Otto, who was all about efficiency and practicality, it seemed like a waste no matter how much he tried to look at it.

“I’m guessing that place in the distance is where the remains of that Argonne bastard are kept?”

“It certainly looks that way.”

“Let’s go.”

Otto started to walk toward the mausoleum.

*Crunch, crunch!*

Suddenly, the sound of grinding stone began to echo, and the statues turned their heads in unison to look at Otto.

“…Eh.”

Otto made an expression of disbelief as the ten thousand or so statues glared at him.

‘Yeah, there’s no way he’s just going to leave such a nice grave unprotected. There must be a reason for all those statues.’

In the real world, Qin Shi Huang’s tomb had just clay molds and baked ornaments, but this was a different world.

There was nothing strange about the statues in the tomb coming to life and attacking intruders.

– Even death will not pay for disturbing the Emperor’s rest.

– Death will not repay the sins of those who have disturbed the Emperor’s rest.

– Death will not pay for the crime of disturbing the Emperor’s rest.

*Thump!* *Thumb!* *Thump!*

The stone statues began to move in unison, marching toward Otto’s group.

Around the same time.

“What, no report?”

Emperor Argonne frowned as the regularly scheduled report was hours delayed.

It was something he found very difficult to comprehend.

With Gaius heading to the site to personally oversee the excavation, reports should have been more frequent and more punctual.

Furthermore, the reports from the excavation site had been organized to come in steadily every two hours, using dozens of messengers.

Despite this near real-time reporting, there had been no news for eight hours.

‘Something must have happened. There’s no way he could have missed four reports otherwise.’

With that judgment, Argonne stood up from his seat.

“Get the men ready. I will go to the excavation site myself.”

Normally, he would not have gone where there was even the slightest doubt or danger, but this time he decided to make a bold move.
