69 – Episode 69

The Wendigo sat on her throne and waited for Sir to come. Of course she wasn’t going to sit still and wait.

He was enjoying a more extravagant meal than usual, roasting and stuffing a whole calf that the forest people had offered as an offering in celebration of their victory.

“It seems like the chefs’ skills are improving every day. Geron, why don’t you try it too?”

The wendigo chewed on her leg and encouraged Geron.

The chefs may have developed a new sauce, but the flavor was so much better than usual that it was a shame to enjoy it alone.

However, despite the Wendigo’s recommendation, Geron shook his head and refused.

“Isn’t this the calf that people offered to the spirits in the hopes that they would eat it? I don’t think it would be polite for me to put my mouth to it.”

“If anyone hears this, they will think that I ended the war alone. I am always grateful for your dedication, but sometimes I worry that you may be too stubborn.”

The wendigo was sad as she chewed on her bone. She thought that since she usually worked hard on his behalf, she deserved to share this.

Geron thought, looking at the Wendigo with her shocked face.

‘In fact, isn’t it true that the spirit finished it alone?’

It was the spirit who separated the enemy, and it was the spirit who cut off the enemy’s head…

However, Geron learned something while serving the Wendigo. The point was not to interfere with the Wendigo’s thoughts.

He is saying this out of concern for his people, so why bother?

“Even if you say that, I can’t eat it.”

“I can’t help it. If you want to eat it, just tell me. I’ll leave a portion for you.”

The wendigo cut off the calf’s leg into large pieces and continued her meal.

When roughly half of the calf had been eaten, Skadi, who had been called by the Wendigo, opened her door and came inside her.

“Oh, if she had known that Wendigo was eating, she would have come a little later. Should she tell the guest she called?”

“She came sooner than expected. She doesn’t really need to tell Sir. It’s not polite to call her guest and ask him to wait. But… Why did Osa come?”

The Wendigo asked, pointing to Osa standing next to Skadi.

Recently, she felt sorry for bothering Osa by calling her, so she didn’t call her…

Why did she come with Skadi?

In response to Wendigo’s question, Osa smiled awkwardly and looked at Skadi.

“Ahahahaha. Lately, following Skadi has become a habit…”

Geron nodded her head in understanding. She was certain that if the person serving her moved, her assistant would naturally follow suit.

Skadi smiled and praised Osa.

“Other people help me a lot, but lately I’ve been getting the most help from Mr. Osa.”

“Oh, no! I just wanted to help you with work and learn magic.”

Osa was startled and waved his hand. I didn’t want to be a fly that bothered Skadi for no reason.

Spirits have a strong desire to possess, so there were cases where she would severely harass others when they approached the shaman she had fortune-telled.

Of course, the spirit had never shown such a vicious side, but there was no harm in being careful.

‘If that palm just touches me, my head will shatter like a rotten tomato.’

The Wendigo had no intention of turning Osa’s head into a rotten tomato.

Isn’t it natural for her to think it’s amazing that she follows Skadi around and helps him even though it’s not her job?

The wendigo joked in her gentle voice.

“It’s nice to see your humility. What I can give you right away is Shinbi… I understand. I told you not to look at me like that. Or how about this calf? It tastes pretty good.”

When Geron was disgusted by the word ‘mystery’ and Skadi was embarrassed, the Wendigo hurriedly pointed to the calf.

Of course, I really have no intention of going beyond the reward with just food…

“Honey, gulp.”

“Huh?”

Osa looked at the roast calf with her trembling eyes. Although the wendigo had eaten quite a bit, the roasted calf still gave off an appetizing smell.

If it is a roasted calf worthy of being offered to a spirit, the taste is beyond imagination…

‘No! Even so, it is no different from an offering offered to the spirits, but if a shaman covets something like that, he is disqualified as a shaman!’

Osa closed her eyes tightly and resisted her temptation.

Although she was unable to overcome hunger because she was a vagabond during her childhood, she is now a full-fledged shaman!

‘Such a temptation!’

‘I guess I really want to eat it.’

The Wendigo noticed that Osa knew how to enjoy her food more than she thought. Her joy and despair, determination and hesitation flashed before her eyes, so how could he not know?

The Wendigo lowered her head and whispered to Geron.

“Geron. I’m sorry, but can I give Osa one leg? I know it’s an offering from people, but I think he really wants to eat it.”

“… Are you saying this because of what I said? If you want, you can just give it to me.”

“Then you might get angry.”

“……”

Geron was disgusted by the Wendigo’s criticism. She felt that anyone who heard her would think she was oppressing her wendigo.

She said that because she only cared about herself back then, but now things are different!

“The reason I got angry at the spirit was because he sometimes did things that went beyond common sense. This would actually be a funny story, so why would I be angry!”

Geron realized that sometimes she was uncomfortable with the fact that the Wendigo was not like a spirit.

If you want to do something like this, you can just do it!

“I’m glad you’re okay. Could you please ring the bell? It’s too small for me to shake.”

Geron looked at her wendigo with sullen eyes and took one of her bells from her arms and shook it. Then servants came in from outside and bowed politely.

“Take the calf and cut it up for me. Wrap one leg so I can take it with me.”

“It won’t be easy for Osa to eat a leg by himself, right?”

“Of course, I’m giving it to you to eat Skadi. Let’s have a meal together in privacy.”

Skadi smiled and nodded her head in response to the Wendigo’s favor.

The strong servants carefully lifted the pedestal on which her calf was placed and carried it away. Then one servant approached the Wendigo and she asked him:

“Would you mind if I bring the calf back as soon as I finish what you instructed me to do?”

“No. I’ll give you separate instructions later. It looks like a guest has arrived, so prepare some tea.”

The discerning attendant instructed others to clean up the surrounding area and light scented candles to remove the smell.

The Wendigo stared at Geron, admiring his skillful response. This was because all of the attendants working at the temple were hand-picked by Geron.

“How did you find a friend like that?”

“hehehehe. Aren’t half of the forest people runaways? If you look for them, you’ll find friends like that. Above all, there was no need to look for them.”

Intellectuals, illegitimate children, or even fallen nobles could become fugitives. There was no need to look for them.

Those people came to the temple on their own, showed off their abilities, and volunteered to become servants.

After all, what better place to live in this forest than next to a wendigo?

What Geron did was to pick out those who were evil or insidious.

The servants finished cleaning neatly, served warm tea, and left as politely as they came in.

And after a while, a woman appeared with a beautiful fairy on her shoulder.

Sir, a beauty with sharp fox-like eyes and long golden hair, greeted the Wendigo with her haughty expression.

“This is my first time greeting you formally. I am Sir of Freyr, and although I am not proud of it, I am confident that I am a fairly good shaman.”

“I thought it was strange because the scent of a spirit came from his body… But it looks like he has no intention of hiding it.”

“… Freya said she has no intention of hiding.”

Sir answered, glaring at her spirit riding on her shoulder. Even though her gaze burning with resentment must have stung quite a bit, Freya held firm.

Freya spread her wings and took off, and she approached the front of the Wendigo.

She looked at her wendigo curiously and began to examine her cooking.

[ Hmm… It’s better than I thought, isn’t it? When she heard the rumors, she thought she was a crazy spirit. The same goes for what you do. ]

“Well, I’m afraid someone might think it’s a spirit, so that’s extremely rude.”

The Wendigo was convinced that the fairy in front of her was a spirit. The raw, innocuous rudeness definitely hit the mark.

Sir sighed at her Freya’s unexpected behavior. Freya, unaware that she was hurting herself, returned to her Sir and chattered away.

[ Self. Contrary to what I feared, I guess it really was a good spirit! Mutant spirits are filled with disgust just by feeling the flowing mystery, but that guy… Ouch! ]

Sir grabbed Freya’s wings with a cold expression and stuffed them into her pocket.

Why does this ancient spirit speak of a story that can be debunked?

The Wendigo was greatly surprised by Sir’s boldness. It was natural, since the only shamans I had seen so far were those who were trapped by spirits.

“It seems you are quite close with the spirit?”

[ Of course! You and I share blood… Ugh!? ]

“No. It can’t be that I’m close to Freya.”

‘It seems like we’re really close friends.’

Sir denied it with a straight face, but she decided that the Wendigo seemed close enough to her.

Otherwise, there was no way the spirit would have endured the humiliation of having it stuffed in its pocket.

“Well, it’s not important whether you’re close to the spirit or not. The smell is pretty bad, but… You’re pretty good, so let’s move on.”

Although she was not as fragrant as Skadi, a scent close to her flowery scent emanated from Sir’s body.

At least it means he’s not a villain…

‘But it doesn’t change that he’s a shaman from outside. ‘You must not let down your guard.’

But the Wendigo did not let down its guard.

Even if you have lived as a good person until now, isn’t it possible for a person to become a bad person starting today?

The Wendigo stared into Sir’s eyes and got straight to the point.

“Why did you come to see me?”

It was an ordinary question, but the weight was not ordinary at all.

Sir felt tension as if a sharp sword was pointed at his neck.

She instinctively sensed that based on the Wendigo’s judgment, her head might be blown off.

Sir gathered his trembling heart and slowly glanced at Geron, Skadi, and Osa.

‘She is definitely different from the spirits I’ve seen so far.’

Even though she did not have the ability to see through the essence of her opponent like a wendigo, she had a very good eye for people and was confident about it.

On the face of a wicked person, the sins he had accumulated so far were bound to seep into his expression, complexion, and actions.

However, the spirit’s associates showed no such traces. Rather, the clear eyes seen in good people were sparkling.

There was no way such people would serve under an evil spirit…

“I want to make a deal with the spirit. Not a short-term deal, but a deal that will make everyone happy in the long run.”

Sir threw the dice.
