Chapter 20: Forgotten thing

“Cr*pcr*pcr*p!!”

I was in a panic.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

[Thank you very much, Thank you very much.]

After the stream, Lumi-chan gave me a call.

I told her how I enjoyed the stream as well, and went back to work.

After doing about 1/3rd,. I sent the parts I had finished revising to my editor, Amano-san, and got it proofread… and we repeated this process multiple times.

I was able to progress my work by a good amount, and went to sleep at 12am.

The next day.

I was able to wake up better than the day before.

As usual, I walked to school with Tenrai-kun and the elementary schoolers, and when I arrived at the classroom, everyone was looking at booklets and studying.

I wonder what they’re doing?

Even people who don’t usually study are studying.

Even that Tenrai-kun had a booklet open.

The booklet that everyone has, If I remember correctly it was something that we got together with the summer homework.

It felt like the summer break ended pretty fast, but I wonder why everyone is studying right now.

It’s like there’s a test today…

Wait a minute? What day was it today?

It was the day after the entrance ceremony.

I was sure the next day was…

“It’s the proficiency test!!”

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

And so we’re back to the beginning.

It is 8:20am at the moment.

“What’s wrong Haruto, for you to be that panicked.”

Tenrai-kun called out to me, who was hugging my head.

“I forgot about the test.”

“Haha, I see, you’re trying to show off that you didn’t study, huh.”

The other boys nearby looked at me.

“I really forgot about it, I was watching Amatsu Atsume-sensei’s stream yesterday.”

“You also saw that!? It was amazing, it was the stream with Fu-chan, right!?”

“Ah, I also saw that.”

“Me too.”

Several of my other classmates also said that they saw the stream.

I can really tell why Lumi-chan is popular.

“Haru-sensei was also watching that stream! That was amazing, right!?”

“Even that always calm, Amatsu Atsume-sensei, was shaken, it was my first time seeing that.”

“That’s right, it was so adorable!!”

“You think so too, right? Haruto!?”

“Um...Actually it was my first time watching, It was very fun.”

“Seriously!? Vtubers are great, man! I’ll push you into the rabbit hole.”

“That’s for sure, after the test at least…”

When I said the word “test” the faces of the people around me suddenly got dark.

[[[[[The test, huh…]]]]]

In the highschool I attend, other than the periodic tests, we also have something called a proficiency test, it doesn’t have anything to do with our grades, but it’s a test that helps you once again recognize subjects you have a hard time dealing with.

During the start of the summer and winter break, they release booklets as homework that contain the subjects Japanese, Math, and English.

“There’s no way you would study, right?”

“Of course, Summer break is for playing around.”

“I wanted more time.”

“Right?”

“Haruto has good grades anyways.”

“He really didn’t study…”

As we talked like that, the chime rang.

...The chime... rang?

“Isn’t it time for Homeroom!?”

“Dang, our time got taken by Haruto!”

“I wasn’t able to study though!?”

“Like I care! Just make sure you don’t get a bad mark.”

Everyone returned to their seats.

I also hurriedly returned to my seat and took out the booklet.

“Yo-, let’s start homeroom.”

With a lazy voice, the male teacher entered.

He’s our homeroom teacher, and is an old man past his 40s.

He always has a lazy atmosphere around him.

“I think you should know, but there’s a test today. Although it has nothing to do with your grades, do your best anyway. I’ll put up the schedule here so confirm it yourself, that’s all.”

After saying so, he left the classroom.

Compared to other teachers, he stops talking way earlier, so he’s unexpectedly popular with students.

Since he finished quickly, I can use the few minutes before the first period starts to study.

“There’s no time like right now to do this!!”

I opened the booklet for Japanese, and confirmed the contents.

I’ll ignore the kanji.

It’s better to leave that to feeling rather than memorization.

Reading comprehension and ancient japanese.

Thankfully both of these are multiple choice, so I only need to choose one of the choices.

I don’t remember ancient Japanese at all, so I’ll put all my effort into reading comprehension…

“Hey, Haruto, can you teach me this part?”

One of the classmates that got hyped up by the talk about Vtubers came over with his booklet.

If I remember correctly, instead of trying to figure out the problem yourself, it would be easier to ask someone else so you can reconfirm the parts you don’t understand.

I’m thankful for this.

“Sure thing, which part is it…?”

Isn’t this English!?

It’s English!

“Hey, do you know which period the English test starts?”

“Don’t make fun of me, of course I know, it’s on the 3rd period.”

“Won’t you usually study Japanese instead!?”

“It’s not good to be stuck in your own ways, you know!”

“You’re too obvious, Tenrai-kun!”

“You-! Why me!?”

As expected, Tenrai-kun joined in.

”Hey, Kazu! Don’t just ask Haruto by yourself. Teach me as well, about factorization.”

“Isn’t that Math!?”

“Then I’ll have you teach me as well, about factors.”

“Isn’t that arithmetic?”

“As for me, I have no idea about the Sakuradamon Incident…”

“Isn’t that History? Also it has nothing to do with the test today!?”

“So about scientific notation…”

“Can you atleast keep it to something related to the test?”

My classmates one after another to ask me questions.

They obviously have nothing to do with the test, but I was able to talk to people I haven’t been able to talk to before.

*kin kon kan…*

[[[[[Ah…]]]]]

It was the bell signaling the start of the first period.

It was at that moment that I sacrificed my study time in order to increase the amount of people I talk to.

“The 1st period’s test is starting, hurry back to your seats.”

Our homeroom teacher entered.

He handed out the question and answer sheets lazily and then brought a chair over to the podium and took a seat.

“Well then, work hard for the next 50 minutes.”

After saying that he went to sleep.

He’s not pretending to be asleep, but actually went to sleep.

You could even hear him snoring.

With our teacher like that, we flipped over our test sheets while bewildered.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

Wait a moment?

While I was doing the questions, a doubt sprouted inside me.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to study for the test at all, and since I went through the booklet that was handed out as homework right at the start of summer break, I don’t remember it at all.

But for some reason I can answer everything smoothly.

Even at the parts with the kanji, even though I had trouble with reading them until recently, I was able to immediately answer them.

Even the reading comprehension part, I could go through them far more easily than any test I’ve had before.

Is it because of all the work I did with revising the novel?

But surely it wouldn’t just suddenly improve my reading comprehension, right?

Even including the time I spent looking everything over, I was able to finish the test with 10 minutes to spare.

I used up a lot of time to look it over several times.

I think this should be enough, right?

While I was thinking so, the chime rang.

“Ok, that’s it, put down your pens and pass the answer sheets forward.”

I could hear my classmates let out a tired sigh.

I also let out a sigh.

I’m tired.

“Then I’ll be back on the next one as well, let’s end it here for now.”

After gathering the answer sheets, the homeroom teacher left the classroom.

“That was hard.”

“Was it? I was able to answer it pretty smoothly.”

“Well, that’s because you had good grades from the start, of course you’d be able to easily go through the questions smoothly.”

Is it really like that?

“What is it? Did you actually study or something?”

“No? I didn’t study at all. Next up is math, so I really want to study right now, even for just a little bit.”

“Fufufu, But I refuse! You guys!”

[[[[[Oh!]]]]]

I was grabbed by my classmates.

“W,what are you-!?”

“Sorry Haruto.”

“There was no other way but this to lower your grades.”

“Don’t hold a grudge.”

“HaaHaaHaa!! Haa-!!”

Wait a minute, wasn’t there a really dangerous sounding person just now?

With my arms and legs caught, I couldn’t even open up the booklet.

There’s only 3 minutes left before the break ends.

“At this moment we can finally study.”

“But you won’t be able to do so if you’re holding me down.”

[[[[[We already gave up.]]]]]

The eyes of the 4 people holding me down became hollow.

They’ve completely given up!?

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

In the end, without being able to study at all, the tests for Math and English ended.

Only for today, due to the tests, classes ended in the morning.

It was after school.

“Fuhahahaha, How is it, Haruto!?”

With a smug face, the 5 people from a while ago gathered around me.

“Because of the fact that this has nothing to do with our grades, we were able to bother you like this!!”

“It would be quite the sight, seeing Sakurai’s scores lower compared to the periodic tests!”

“Can I touch you one more time??”

There really is a pervert mixed in!?

It’s true that I forgot about the test, and even got harassed like this, so I couldn’t study as I wanted, but it feels like I was able to do better compared to before.

I was already pretty good at English due to my father’s influence, and the Math this time was fairly simple.

Not to mention, the amount of stuff I can understand in the Japanese test also increased, which is a good thing.

“I’m looking forward to the scores being announced.”

Farewell!!

After saying so, the 5 of them went home.

Wait?

I was left behind…

I trudgingly went home.
