I'll Tell You Every Day

Chapter 36: Chapter 36

After crying her little heart out, Daiyu fell asleep with Liu Jin. Nana went to call them for their afternoon snack but found them napping in each other's arms. Unable to muster the heart to wake them, she left them alone to spend more time together instead.

For the next few days after that, Daiyu stayed glued next to Liu Jin. She was either tightly gripping his shirt as he walked around the mansion or holding his hand directly. No matter how much Wang Jing, Nana, or Shuren spoiled her, she never let her Jin-gege out of her sight.

Although her Jin-gege had assured her that he wasn't going anywhere, Daiyu could still not be at ease. If her Jin-gege were to disappear, she believed that if she held on to him tightly, he would have no choice but to take her with him. That's why Daiyu followed him around like a little chick.

Liu Jin, on the other hand, didn't mind. But because he felt bad for scaring her to this extent, he made sure to spoil Daiyu even more to make up for it.

Today, he was learning how to tie Daiyu's hair up. She sat on his lap, drawing, while he worked his way through her hair with a comb and a hair tie in between his lips.

"Are you planning to become a hairdresser?"

Liu Jin's eye twitched upon hearing a familiar annoying voice.

"Why are you here again?!"

"Why not?! It's summer vacation!" Zhihao replied as-a-matter-of-factly.

"Exactly! Take a vacation and stop annoying me!"

Meanwhile, Daiyu worked hard to finish her drawing.

"Jin-gege!" She called.

"Mmm?"

She rested her back against his chest and looked up to him while she lifted her arms to show him her drawing.

The drawing was of a boy holding a small girl's hand with balloons and what seemed like a Ferris wheel at the background.

He pondered.

"Do you want to go to the amusement park?"

"Musment park?" Daiyu tilted her head to one side.

"Mmm. It's the place on your drawing."

Daiyu looked down and stared at her drawing. She had only drawn what she had seen on TV. She knew that things on the TV were far away. While she lived on the streets, she would often look at the screens while she stood outside the electronics store. She knew that while the box showed her beautiful things, she could never have them. She had tried to reach out to them before, only to discover that her dreams were walled off by a cold glass.

She shook her head.

"Can't go. Daiyu can't go."

"Why not?" Liu Jin pouted.

She looked up to him.

"Daiyu has no money."

Liu Jin felt his heart clench and even Zhihao smiled at her bitterly.

"It's okay, Xiao Yu. It's not the same anymore." Liu Jin tried to explain.

"Yeah. Things are better now." Zhihao patted her head.

"Xiao Yu, you're not alone anymore, remember? You have grandpa, mom, dad, and me. And even your annoying Zhihao-gege."

"Hey!" Zhihao clenched his teeth.

"You can go anywhere you want to. You need only ask."

" Jin-gege has money?" She tilted her head to one side and Liu Jin nodded with a smug look on his face.

"Mmm. Jin-gege is very rich."

"R-really?" Daiyu's eyes turned into dollar signs.

"Uhuh." He nodded. "Your husband is handsome, smart, and rich." He huffed.

"What a conceited bastard!" Zhihao rolled his eyes.

"Jin-gege is the best!"

"Hehe." Liu Jin giggled as he gently patted Daiyu's head.

"Let's go ask mom and dad to take us there. Maybe your grandfather will be willing to tag along too."

for visiting.

"Zhihao-gege too?"

"No. Those places don't allow animals inside."

"Hey!"

After the children asked Nana, she quickly agreed. However, they had to postpone their trip for some time in the near future. After all, with the Kangs still running about, they had to prioritize their safety first.

Meanwhile, the next few days were very eventful outside the Wang Mansion.

With help from the higher ups, Kang Wei had managed to deal significant damage against Yu Yanlin. By now, he was almost backed to a corner but the man was not easy to take down. He was smart and quick on his feet.

Unlike the Kangs who relied solely on their illegal trade, Yanlin had legitimate businesses that they could not shut down. Moreover, while he might have lost some men, Yanlin was not the type to make sacrifices for the sake of pride. When he knew that his loss was imminent, he did not hesitate to have his men retreat.

And this was exactly the trait that saved him.

At three in the afternoon, while Kang Wei's side was preparing to launch a big attack to take Yanlin down once and for all, their compound was raided by the military. Several of their men were gunned down without hesitation and only the higher ranked men were spared. After all, they needed bodies to imprison or else the public would grow suspicious.

The underground ringleaders were not spared either. Simultaneous operations were conducted to apprehend all of them at once, leaving no room for them to warn their brothers of their impending arrest. While they could not round up all the leaders and some had managed to escape, the mission was still successful with most of them brought under custody.

However, among the men who managed to avoid apprehension was Yanlin and his men.

This was because the moment Yanlin found out that Kang Wei had called for back up from the higher ups, he had already planned on retreating. Only a fool would choose to fight a losing battle. So he began preparing their escape route.

First, he prepared a yacht, planning to bide their time at sea until the tension simmers down. Next, he prepared new identities for themselves for their eventual return to society. Lastly, he prepared ammunition and cold cash, his safety nets for whenever something went awry.

When everything was prepared, he withdrew immediately, not even bothering to leave instructions for his businesses on the surface. By the time the military stormed their base, Yanlin and his men had long gone escaped into the safety of sea.

While all this was going on, Lanfen was abandoned in a far-flung province. She was drugged for the last time before Shuren's men left her inside a bus headed for the hills. While Shuren was against sparing her life, he had no choice. Since he was working with the military, he couldn't kill her without arousing suspicion.

At least, not for now.

While Lanfen was away, trial for her father began. Evidence presented in court included the illegal transactions the Kangs had made using the Liu Enterprise as a cover up. To testify for the Liu's innocence on the matter, General Shen, Shen Nana's father, took the witness stand. He testified on behalf of the military that Liu Shuren, his son-in-law, had accepted the military's proposal to act as bait to lure the Kangs out.

He presented several documents evidencing the military's long-standing plan to rid the city of its proliferate underground drug routes and how the Kangs had played a huge part in expanding illegal trade in the metropolis. Then, he presented data on how Shuren's assistance had led to the apprehension of most of the underground ringleaders and how his men had successfully closed several drug routes.

Of course, Kang Wei did not go down without a fight either. He first sued Shuren for cohabitating with his daughter while he was still apparently married to Shen Nana. In response to this charge, Shuren claimed that the woman had never lived with him at all. As evidence, he presented Butler Shao's testimony and the fact that Lanfen's whereabouts were currently unknown.

Moreover, he presented several videos of Lanfen in sexual congress with different men, claiming that Lanfen was cohabiting with other men, and not with him.

Kang Wei could not rebut this argument because all his men inside the Liu Estate had effectively been 'silenced' by Fang Bao. With no one to testify on his behalf, he could not prove that Lanfen had moved into the Liu Estate a year ago. The only other person who could testify for Lanfen, Yu Yanlin, was currently staking out at sea.

Moreover, Kang Wei could not contact his daughter either. He tried accusing Shuren of abduction but he had no evidence. Lanfen was currently rolling in grass in some far-off mountain, trying to get back to civilization. With nothing to back up his claims, the charges against Shuren were eventually dropped.

After nearly a month-long trial, the military had successfully prosecuted Kang Wei and he was sentenced to death. By the time Lanfen returned to society, everything had changed. Her father's assets had been seized, his men arrested, and her position as Madam Liu, taken away.

Struggling one last time to get back into the Liu Estate, she was greeted by an oncoming car, her death written off as an 'accident.'
