Infection: Dying Days

Chapter 27 - Inside The Mind Of Glasses-kun

Near a corner outside the second floor gym entrance...

"Be aware of your surroundings."

I carefully warn groups 1,2, and 4 to be alert as I peek around the corner to the adjacent hallway. By the way, since I'm the leader of the group that's spearheading the trip to the bus garage, Mr. Braxton and the other teacher (was not an important name so I didn't remember it) full heartedly decided that I should have full authority in picking fighters to fight the infected with. Which, I happily agreed to of course.

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

I spot 6 infected, they were simply walking around as if they were in a daze. Probably waiting for their next meal I bet.

It's a good thing that guy (Desmond) decided we try this mid-day, otherwise, I'm not sure whether or not the students would've had the nerves to confront these things in the dark.  Especially if the moment they used their flashlight, the only thing they would see would be a person frenzied donning a bloody and gory appearance, even I would scream in fright.

Pushing my glasses back up, I turn back towards the groups, point at a few people and say.

"Alright, there are 6 of them out there. I want you, you, you, and you to help me take them down."

"A-are you sure about this? Can you really believe in that guy's plan? "

A boy I picked from my group said with an uneasy face. It seems he's quite nervous to fight the infected.

But I didn't care. My only goal right now is to get away from this death trap called Pelican Soar Academy, the farther I am the better. Therefore, I won't let an insignificant person's uneasiness stop from achieving my goal. It's as simple as that.

So, putting on an impassive face, I told him.

"Do you have any other ideas then?"

"...No."

"Then what's the point of asking? If you want to leave, you can, the door is right there. But if you don't want to, I suggest you keep those thoughts of uncertainty to yourself. It's demoralizing. Isn't that right Mr. Braxton?"

Needing somebody to back me up, I threw my question to Mr. Braxton.

"That's right. The thing we need the most right now is confidence. If we have that then we'll be able to make the trip over there."

Having a stern expression, Mr. Braxton charismatically said. This helped everyone's mood lighten.

"..."

The boy opened his mouth slightly before closing it again. He wanted to say something but decided against it. That's good. At least he realizes that his actions are having an effect on everybody else.

However, it's not like his worries are unfounded. This plan is somewhat ridiculous, other than having directions on where to go, we're basically flying blind. I wouldn't have even followed that irritating guy's (Desmond) plan if it wasn't for President Yang speaking up for him...I don't know what relationship those two have but to make her trust him like that means he must have some ability. And going by how well she led the Student Council over the years, I trust her decision.

"Like I was saying earlier, I want the people I picked to help me kill those infected. The quicker we are the better! Let's Go!"

I want to leave this place as soon as possible!

Wielding the aluminum baseball bat I got from the cart earlier, I along with the people I picked run out from the corner towards the infected.

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

"Aaah!"

The moment they heard our footsteps running across the floor, the attention of the infected were immediately on us. In a slow and unsteady gait, they move our way.

SMASH!

"Aagh!"

With the swing of my bat, I connected with the jaw of an infected with full force, sending it flying to the ground along with some blood. Not waiting for it to get up, I held the bat overhead and delivered a few powerful strikes to its skull, causing it to dent slightly inwards.

"..."

When I no longer heard it's m.o.a.ns, I looked at the other students and saw that they were still engaging the other four infected, leaving only one left. It was closing in on the boy student who was complaining earlier.

"S-sh*t!"

The boy exclaimed in horror as he saw the infected approaching. If he tries to fight the one he's fending off right now, he's going to get bit by the other one and vice versa. To put it short, he's in a very dangerous predicament.

Tough luck for him but in order for me to make it through here in one piece, I'll need him to help me fight through all this!

This isn't out of kindness since to me, using everyone here is a means to an end.

So just before that infected had grabbed him...

"Aaah!"

"H-Help!"

SMASH!

I smashed the baseball bat into the side of its head!

"Aagh!"

And just like the other one, it fell to the floor. But this time it didn't get up nor did it make any sounds. It seems l hit it in just the right place. Lucky for me!

Seeing the infected that was closing in on him dead, the boy shows a look of gratitude before pushing off the infected he was fighting.

"Take this!"

"Agh!"

With a powerful thrust forward, the boy stabs the javelin into the infected left eye, which instantly stopped its movement.

By now, all the infected in the hallway were dead.

"Phew, I thought I was a goner there. Thanks for your help!"

The boy said sincerely as he patted my shoulder. This made my glasses slip of my nose a little. Feeling pissed because of that, I push my glasses back up and give the boy a harsh look of reproach.

"Huff...Huff...Didn't I say be aware of your surroundings? I won't be saving your a.s.s next time!"

"S-sorry."

The boy said as he dropped his head down in shame and embarrassment.

"Hmph! Anyways...It's safe out here so come on out!"

After I got done reprimanding him, I told the students at the corner that it was safe to come out.

With somewhat stiff and scared faces due to the sight of dead bodies laying on the, everyone entered the hallway.

"Alright, let's continue on. We'll do rotation of fighters as we make our way to the bus garage. When one gets tired we will switch them out. Got it?"

I suggested after realizing that after taking out two infected, I was extremely tired. You see, I'm more of an indoor type of person instead of an athletic one. I spend most of my time studying and reading books.

Heh, if I had to describe myself, I'd say my stamina is below average. Especially since I got a D minus in Physical Education!

Once everyone agreed to my proposition, I took a deep breath before walking ahead of the groups.

The faster I get to the bus garage the better!
