Infection: Dying Days

Chapter 9 - The key

"Alright, we've rested good enough. Let's be careful and head on up."

"Okay."

After resting for about ten minutes, we resumed our horror filled trip towards the upper level gym entrance.

When we arrived at the top of the stairs, I motioned Amanda to stop.

Very quietly, I crept up to the corner of the hallway entrance and shined Amanda's flashlight app as I leaned out a little.

Compared to the floor below, this floor doesn't seem to have as many infected roaming its halls, because right now, I only see four infected aimlessly walking around.

This is good. Very good.

The less of them the better.

"... Okay, you can come over now."

I whispered to Amanda who responded with a nod as I slowly stepped out into the hallway.

"Stay close."

"I will."

Carefully, while looking back every now and then, we cautiously walk the halls, nimbly dodging and weaving through the infected.

"..."

I don't know if it's because of how we handled the floor below, but our progress this time is much more faster.

After quietly dodging and weaving through many hallways riddled with infected, we arrived near the upper level gym entrance.

It's close. It's just around this cor-

"Kya-mphf!"

"Aaah!"

Just when I was about to walk around the corner leading to upper level gym entrance, I suddenly stopped talking and froze like a deer caught in headlights.

This made Amanda gently bump into me, causing her to let out a subtle yep before quickly covering her mouth.

Which I'm thankful for.

And the reason for this was because within arms reach of me was an infected, more specifically, the gym teacher Mr. Cole!

He was dressed in ballin shorts and a bloodied and ripped grey muscle shirt.

I'm so close to him that I can clearly see his small neck tattoo, it was of a growling bulldog that had 'USMC' written in bold letters underneath it.

What makes this situation even more scarier is that the flashlight is shining right in his face!

His unfocused and glazed brown eyes are staring right at me!

F.u.c.k!

"Aaah!"

"..."

"..."

With a little movement as possible, I stick Amanda's phone in my b.r.e.a.s.t pocket and use my left hand to reach out behind me and grasp Amanda's hand.

"!?"

She twitched a little in surprise due to my action but didn't yell out, luckily.

Then at a pace almost comparable to a snail's, we back up and I guide Amanda past Mr. Cole and around the corner while having my shovel in my right hand ready to swing the moment Mr. Cole attacks.

When we got a safe distance away from him, I whisper to Amanda.

"Phew, I thought I was dead for a second there."

"M-me too...uhm…"

Embarrassingly, Amanda whispers something inaudible.

"What?"

Wanting to know what she said, I stop and turn to face her. She was blushing a little as she stared down.

Following her gaze, I saw that me and her are still holding hands.

"Ah, sorry. I didn't mean to…"

Somewhat fl.u.s.tered, I let go of Amanda's soft and delicate hand, albeit, a little reluctantly.

"The entrance to the upper level gym should be somewhere in around here. Let's search."

"...Okay."

After a couple of minutes of searching the dark hallway, we finally spot the upper level gym entrance, it was a grey security door.

Walking up to it, I lightly pull on the door's handle and found out it was locked.

Well, this was to be expected, so I'm not surprised.

"Okay, time to call David…"

Pulling Amanda's phone from my b.r.e.a.s.t pocket, I navigate to her dial pad and dialed David's number.

Usually, I would've asked if I could use her phone but looking at the circ.u.mstances at the moment, I'm sure she'd understand.

RING! RING! RING! RING!

"Hello? Who's this?"

After a couple of rings, David answered.

"It's me, Desmond."

"Desmond? It's good that you're okay! And why are you whispering? Nevermind that, where are you?"

Seeing that I'm still alive, David said calmly but happily.

"We're in front of the upper level gym entrance but it's locked so I need you to get the key and unlock the door."

"Got it. I'll talk to one of the people in charge to get the key."

"Okay, but hurry up."

And with that, I hang up the phone and hand it back to its rightful owner, Amanda.

"He said to sit tight and wait for the door to be opened."

I said to her as I sat down and leaned my back against the security door.

"I'm glad we were able to make it here "

"Me too, me too...Sigh, man, talk about a long day!"

I woke up and saw my school turn into hell, I had to fight and kill infected, I saved a beautiful girl, I experienced an actual test of courage.

Yeah, this is a day, I'll never forget.
