The slap echoed briefly in the enclosed space. Moon Xu's surprise left him paralyzed, his left cheek throbbing with pain he barely registered over the shock.

"Moon Xu, you... you snake!" Ye Heng ripped her hand from his grasp, choking back sobs as she did. "You would lead me on so, when you know... you know we could never truly be together!"

"Ye Heng, wait!" But it was too late. She was already bolting down the stairs. By the time Moon Xu had collected himself, she was dashing through the courtyard below. Even when separated so, his eyes remained fixed on her until he could see her no more.
