Chapter 25 - Stream: @Aphrodite (Pyrotechnics and Politics)

A severe-looking woman stood front and center before a whiteboard, beside her an easel holding a flip chart. Her hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and she was dressed in military uniform. Even without knowing the military hierarchy, it was clear from the patches and medals that she was high ranking.

"Today," she began, in the tone of a lecturer, "we have some new viewers, so we'll do a lighter lecture. The topic is different voting systems and the pros and cons of each."

As soon as she finished that opening statement, the strategically placed sparklers sent a shower of sparks behind her from each corner.

Whatsamana (Earth Q): you let lily convince you to use pyrotechnics?

lovelylily (Xiaxia): Aren't they already livening things up~♪

Whatsamana (Earth Q): i think

Whatsamana (Earth Q): your flip pad thing is on fire

After a brief intermission of stomping out some of the more stubborn sparks, Aphrodite flipped the slightly singed pad to the first diagram: a complicated web of arrows and boxes, all meticulously labeled with names like "direct vote," "representative democracy," and "district representation."

She tapped a pointer on the chart. "We will begin by defining the purpose and goal of voting. Following that, we'll go over various systems of voting, briefly touching on pros and cons, and then we'll dive deeper into the workings of a few popular systems."

And for several minutes she did just that.

CouldBeCool (Underdark): Donation to set off more fireworks?

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): There will be no fireworks until we complete this section.

lovelylily (Xiaxia): Now Aphrodite, you said you were going to take more viewer input~♪

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): Yes, that is true... Very well. 50 bits.

@CouldBeCool (Underdark) donated 50 bits!

The smoke caused Aphrodite to cough a bit, but now that the sparks had died out once more, it was time to get back to business.

"As noted earlier, local representation is paramount in most democratic cultures, thus necessitating the use of representative regions, or districts..." She continued her lecture as though it hadn't just been interrupted by fireworks.

ShOwMeYoUrTTS (Just the Worst Place): d0na7i0n to take 0ff y0ur shir7

@ShOwMeYoUrTTS (Just the Worst Place) was banned from the channel. Reason: F.u.c.k off.

Whatsamana (Earth Q): yikes

lovelylily (Xiaxia): You get those sometimes~♪

Thankfully, the next several minutes proceeded uneventfully, as Aphrodite carefully laid out the ins and outs of political theory. At last, she lifted her pointer from the chart and looked directly into the camera.

"Now, that wraps up the first part of this lecture. Are there any questions?"

===============

randomviewer (Etcland): wat is goverment

randomviewer2 (Somewhere): how i shot web

randomviewer3 (IDK): buy gold

Whatsamana (Earth Q): keep going aphro ignore the peanut gallery

===============

"I see there are no questions. After a short break we will continue."

More pyrotechnics sent multicolored sparks all over. A stray spark landed on the chart pad, setting it alight.

Unfortunately, it was less lucky this time. Before Aphrodite could snuff it out, the flame had already spread across the whole pad

That was when the fire sprinklers, which had endured so much up to this point, went off.

===============

lovelylily (Xiaxia): Maybe... we should have done this outside.

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): I appreciate your help Lily but this has been a disaster of a stream.

lovelylily (Xiaxia): Don't let it get you down! We'll plan a little better next time, maybe use some different sparklers, or...

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): No, I think this was well and truly a sign that streaming is not for me.

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): This will be my last stream on political theory.

Whatsamana (Earth Q): aphro i have a question

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): What is it, Whatsa?

Whatsamana (Earth Q): you talked a little about single transferable voting and how it works out to more proportional representation in a multiple party system

Whatsamana (Earth Q): but how does that map to other systems like a two party system where the parties can run multiple candidates

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): Yes, I was going to go into more detail on that subject in the second half.

Aphrodite (Galactic Republic): That will take some time to explain.

Whatsamana (Earth Q): i've got time

===============

The pad was unsalvageable, burnt and wet in equal proportion. But the whiteboard still worked.

Aphrodite pulled the cap off her dry erase marker and started drawing a diagram.
