The morning after my phone call with Akane that was, to put it simply, the worst. Somehow, I dreamt of Akemi and Akemi’s uncle scolding me horribly.

“How freaked out was I?”

Well, both of them are scary, that’s for sure. Not to mention Akemi, but even if uncle is usually gentle,  when he gets angry, he’s really scary.

“I hope nothing goes wrong today…”

After breakfast, brushing my teeth, and getting dressed, I open the front door praying for my wish to be fulfilled. There, along the familiar road and the house across the street, was an unfamiliar sight.

“Geh”

“What do you mean ”Geh” ?!”

“That’s right, Hiroyuki-chan! What’s with the “Geh” ?”

There was Tomomi, with her arms crossed, expressing “I’m getting irritated” all over her body, and Ryoko, with her face puffed out, indicating “I’m angry” all over her face.

“You guys are early.”

As I was thinking about such a trivial thing, their absolute zero gaze pierced through me. Ugh.

“Akane told me about it…”

“…”

“…”

“Well that was an important taste for you guys. Sorry. To be honest, I didn’t think about it too much.”

“…”

“…”

“Therefore.. please. Forgive me.”

Saying so I bowed my head.  A sigh of exasperation, yet a little apologetic, came down from above my head.

“It’s alright, sorry Hiro”

“Sorry, Hiroyuki-chan.”

“Eh? Wa-why are you guys apologizing?”

Shouldn’t I be sorry? From Akane’s email yesterday, I thought their anger still hadn’t cooled off.

“ Akane got mad at me, you know? She said, “Tomomi-chan, did you tell that to Onii?”.

“Same. She said “ I know you don’t like it but you should have told him that you didn’t like it, Ryoko-chan”.”

“Akane…”

Whoa. Turns out you’re a nice person after all! You’ve been following up with your brother to make sure he’s doing well huh!

“…”

With that thought, I quietly put my hands together toward the western sky where Akane would be. (T/N: Putting the hands together means praying in Buddhism )

“Above all else.”

““In the first place, it’s wrong to expect such concern from ‘that’ Oni.””

I stopped my hands which were about to meet and raised my middle finger instead.  What the h**l! I was a little moved there!

“Well, that’s why we reflected on it too. Right, Ryoko?”

“Just like Tomomi-chan says. Sorry, Hiroyuki-chan.”

“That’s enough.”

I wonder, what is with this feeling of hopelessness? I don’t care anymore.

“Don’t be so soft, Hiro. Come on, Ryoko!”

“Mhm! Ne~, Hiroyuki-chan? Since it’s been a while, let’s have lunch together? I made a lot of things as an apology.”

Ryoko then lightly shook the tote bag she was carrying and showed it to me. I don’t know how much it weighs, but it must be quite heavy, judging from the way the bag sways like that.

“Well, if that’s the case, I will be happy to oblige. Frankly, it would be a big help.”

“That’s the spirit! Look forward to it!”

“Why are you making it such a big deal? Wait, by any chance did you make this?

“I don’t like your wording, Hiro. Shouldn’t you be grateful I made it? If I wasn’t trying to free Hiro, who has been through so much lately, from the torments of this world, I wouldn’t be cooking, would I?”

“If you’re gonna say it so bluntly, it’s hard to react. Anyway, thanks.”

Even though it’s not as bad as poison cooking…Tomomi’s cooking is too much for this tired body. (T/N: Says poison cooking in english.)

“So what’s your apology for me?”

“Ryoko will do the cooking and I will do the carrying.”

Taking Ryoko’s tote bag, Tomomi tossed it into the front basket of her own bicycle and gave a thumbs-up.

Oh, so that’s how it is.

“I understand.  Then thankfully, I’ll let you carry it.”

“Leave it to me! So, Hiro? How was the day before yesterday?”

“Day before yesterday?”

“I couldn’t ask you because of what happened yesterday, but you went out with Kiryu-chan, didn’t you? How was it, Hiroyuki-chan?”

“What do you mean “how was it”?

“I was wondering what you did.”

“We went to see our house. The new house where we’re going to live together.”

“…”

“…”

“Wh-what? Why are you staring at me like that?”

“Nah.”

“Well it’s always like this with Hiro.”

“Of course, it’s Hiroyuki-chan after all.”

I feel like they’re being unreasonably angry with me.

“Well,I don’t care about that Hiro. Besides, Kiryu-san? How was she? Did she have a harsh personality after all?”

“Don’t care, you say… Well she is a tad rude at times but.. how do I put this? She isn’t as bad as you think.”

“Is that so? I’m surprised. I expected her to tear your heart into shreds.”

“Well, it’s true that I was torn to shreds in the morning, too.”

“Eh? But she’s not a bad person? Hiro, by any chance are you a M? (T/N: M for m*******t )

“What?! Stop calling me an M! It’s not like that!”

How do I say this?

“You mean you don’t hate her?”

“Mhm.”

I don’t know myself, but at least she doesn’t seem like a bad person.

“That’s right. I mean… she’s not the type that makes you dislike her…”

“Really? Kiryu-san? The “Villainess” wasn’t it?”

“Well, she’s not that much of a “Villainess”. Instead you could even call her a good person. I can’t put it into words well.”

Hmmm. I wonder why? I think the fact that she’s beautiful is affecting my evaluation of her.

“Hiroyuki-chan, are you having trouble?”

“Not exactly… Well, I’m sure she’s not my favorite type…. but what can I say, I can’t seem to dislike her.”

“Isn’t that because she’s pretty?”

“Well I don’t think I’m that frivolous.”

“Really?”

“Of course. Well if I chose girls purely based on their face, I would have confessed to the two of you by now.”

“Wha-? Wh-what are you talking about?!”

“Th-that’s right! What do you mean, Hiroyuki-chan?”

“Ah, well… uhh. I mean..”

The two of them turned bright red and stared at me. No, I’m sorry. That was my bad! However…

“Well objectively speaking, I’m pretty sure you guys are considered beautiful.”

“Then subjectively?”

“I have the sensibility of a normal person.”

“What does that mean, Hiroyuki-chan?”

“I think the two of you are beautiful.”

What am I even saying this early in the morning?

“We-well anyway! Hiro doesn’t know why either, but you don’t hate Kiryu-san, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Well then, why don’t we find out?

“Find out?”

“Yeah. Ryoko, you agree?  A great man once said, “If you know your enemy and know yourself, you will be successful.””

“Well he didn’t say that, Tomomi-chan. But there’s plenty of room, so it’s alright.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I meant,”Let’s find what Hiro is talking about together.””

“Wa? What do you mean?”

“This is what I mean.”

Tomomi makes a megaphone with her hand and turns her eyes to the distance. I followed her gaze and looked in that direction.

“Good morning, Kiryu-san! Do you want to eat together for lunch today?”

I turn to see Kiryu’s face frozen in surprise.
