“Would you like a cup of tea, Higashi kujo-kun?”

I was stretched out on the sofa in the living room after a hard day’s work, which included getting tangled up with that librarian, carrying 11 books, a basket, and a phone call with my father-in-law.

Kiryu, who is looking at me with a wry smile on her face, called to me from the kitchen.

“Do we have coffee?”

“Right now? Won’t that make it harder for you to sleep instead?”

“Ahh… well, maybe so. But on the other hand it might be nice, If I can’t sleep a little.”

“Fufufu…”

Kiryu’s cheeks relax happily at my words, and her gaze falls to my hand – to the book which is her trophy today.

“Did you find it interesting?”

“Kinda. I’m not saying I’ll stay up all night, but I’m willing to read a little more. It’s a pretty good read.”

“Right? I recommend this writer’s essays.”

At Kiryu’s words, I raised the book in my hand to my eye level. The book has less than 200 pages, which is much thinner than what I would expect a  “book” to be.

“I think this is about the right amount. Even I can finish this.”

“Moreover, each story is about ten pages long only, so you get the beginning and end of the story without needing a break, so it’s easier to read. If you don’t like to read, start with essays and you will gradually get used to the longer passages.”

“Really?”

“It’s just like exercises. Even basketball is a sport that involves a lot of running, right?”(E/N: Idk why she said running in here but she most likely meant that the more you run or practice the better you are and the easier basketball becomes for you or you become better.)

“I suppose.”

“Even if you can’t run the whole match at first, aren’t you able to run for longer periods of time as you get used to it?”

“I see, it’s pretty similar.”

“That’s right. Training is important for reading.”

When you put it that way, it makes sense.

I see, so the reason I can’t read is because I wasn’t used to it!

“Well, those who like reading, like it from the start. And there are people too who are not suited for it, of course.”

“Oh…”

“In the first place, Higashi Kujo, you have a close friend named Kamo-san who loves to read, but you haven’t read any books up to this point. You are not suited for reading.”

“I never thought of reading a book that much to be honest.”

It all started with Kiryu’s words, “Since you carried these books, why don’t you read some of them too?” To be honest, I had no intention of actually reading them, and then she said  “Would you like to at least try out one of the essays in this book?”. I read it and found it surprisingly interesting.

“I feel like I’m being held by a fox..”

(T/N: The expression means to be taken aback by something unexpected. )

“Hasn’t Kamo-san ever encouraged you to read a book?”

“She has. She has… but the books she reads have difficult expressions or are huge, so I didn’t feel like reading them at all.”

“Ahhh… Kamo-san is the type who will go all out to promote the books she loves.”

“What about you?”

“I’m the type who recommends the right book for the right person.”

“After hearing that… I  feel like you’re more awesome than Ryoko.”

“Really? Well, I’ve never really recommended anything until now to be honest. Since I don’t have friends.”

“Is that some kind of self-deprecating joke?”

There’s something slightly heartbreaking about it.

“It’s pure fact. Well, it’s not about who’s better. Kamo-san is someone who wants to enjoy the moment. And I’m just someone who wants to keep breathing for as long as possible.”(E/N: Say what now?)

“You mean we should be enthusiasts and expand our horizons?”

“I think that’s one way to put it. I think it’s a good idea. Because if we can talk about similar topics when we eventually get married, it will enrich our life as a couple, don’t you think?”

“I guess.”

“I often hear stories about couples who have conversations when they first get married, but then they stop talking and eventually the only conversation they have is about their children. Then, when the children leave the nest, they get divorced. Don’t you think the chances of that happening would be reduced if both parties had common interests?”

“So if that happens, you’re going to dump me in the future…”

“I won’t dump you. I don’t want to be that unfair.”

“Really?”

“Besides, at that age, you’ll be more popular than I am, right?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Men like young women, don’t they?”

“I can’t say for sure… what about women?”

“We like rich people.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“You hear a lot about rich people’s second wives. But you don’t hear much about the opposite, do you? Well, it’s not always the case.”

“Well…”

From a probabilistic point of view, that might be true. Maybe the guy just brags about walking around with a young woman while the woman just goes along with it. Simply, men are idiots.

“Still, it’s not like I’m going to go for younger women at that age.”

“Ara~? Will you stay with me for the rest of your life?”

“That’s… whatever the circumstances are from now on, we are getting married.”

“What a positive and happy remark. Have you had a change of heart?”

“Ah…”

That’s right.

“First, you’re not as bad as I thought you were.”

“What kind of image–wait, you don’t have to say it.”

“A villainess.”

“I told you not to… But still, it’s a template, isn’t it? They say a lot about me behind my back.”

“But it’s really not true is it? If you do something wrong, you honestly apologize. There aren’t many bad people who are capable of gratitude and apology.”

“It’s natural to apologize when you do something wrong, am I right? And to be grateful when you’re happy.”

“But I’ve never seen you apologize or thank anyone.”

Apart from me… Nevermind. She even bowed her head to Ryoko and Tomomi.

“I don’t need to be thankful nor be apologetic for those people. I’ll fight if needed.”

“What? Are you a member of some battle war tribe?”

“DId you know, in some European cities, if someone presses a cigarette against you, you lose if you raise your voice?”

“This is Japan, you know?”

What city is that? I’m never going there now.

“That was just a joke… Well, I don’t usually have conversations with a lot of people. So there aren’t really many moments where I need to be apologetic or thankful.”

“That’s sad to say..”

“That’s not the case. I’m used to it”

.”I see”

Well, if she says so, I won’t say anything… I don’t have an absurd number of friends either. Then–

“But..”

“Mmm?”

“Uhh… This is pretty embarrassing..”

Saying that she glanced at me with her cheeks slightly tinted vermillion. She looks a little embarrassed, fiddling with her hair.

“Since meeting you Higashi kujo-kun, every day has been a little more fun.”

“Is that so…”

Stop… I’m really embarrassed too, and I feel like a lot of things are going to blow up. Mainly my reasoning.

“B-Because… you are kind, Higashi kujo-kun… and you, unlike others, treat me like a girl, and… I have never been treated like that… S-So that makes me so happy. I know you must be tired, but you even read the book I recommended… I know it must be a hassle for you… And I just want to say that I like that kindness of yours to keep me company.”

“Stop.”

“Earlier, when you said that you weren’t going anywhere, I felt a “Kyun” within me…”(E/N: Holy MOLY!)

“Stop it, Kiryu-san.”

“So if you weren’t here anymore… I might feel a little lonely.”

“Please stop! I’m embarrassed! You’re making me really embarrassed!”

“Uh-huh! Sorry! Ahh ahh! That was embarrassing!”

“You’re not in love with me, are you? One hundred percent, friendship, right! Tell me it’s friendship!”

“W-What? It’s true that I’m not in love with you, but… I feel a little peeved when you ask me to deny it to that extent.”

“It’s gonna blow! My reason and all that will go away!”

Look at it this way: you’re under one roof with a girl you don’t hate, and she says,

‘You know I… like you.’ I’m not sure if I can endure that. Moreover, Kiryu is a very beautiful girl!

“That’s right! 100% friendship!”

“R-Right?!”

“Y-yeah!”

“Then! Let’s continue to get along with each other!”

“U-Un~”

What a farce. We both thought so, glancing at each other in embarrassment.

“Uhh… W-well, I’m going to go to bed.”

“G-good night.

“Yeah… Well, it’s a good thing that you’re now into books, but make sure to go to bed early, okay? Oh, and make sure you sleep in your room! You’ll catch a cold!”

“Got it.”

“Alright then.. Good night.”

Kiryu opens the door from the living room and says ‘bye-bye’ while waving her hand. Despite her elegant face, Kiryu’s gestures are like a small child when she leaves the room.

“I don’t think I can get my head around this.”

Her words were so adorable.

Feeling somewhat defeated, I tossed the book I was holding onto the living room table, and dressed up for a sleepless night.
