The next morning, things essentially went back to normal for Lucia and me.

As there wasn’t anyone to fill in for once the rest of the student council returned to Kastle High.

Something which we really didn’t mind, seeing as being in positions of power usually got us nothing but trouble and stacks upon stacks of paperwork anyway.

And if it weren’t for that, we’d probably be cleaning up some student’s catastrophic mess instead of lounging around in the courtyard right now.

“Hey Otto, why is it that all of the novels that you recommend have a protagonist who is just completely useless?”

Lucia remarked before flipping to the next page of a novel I had recommended to her the other day.

"Same reason why all the books you like have a rich villain, personal preference. Anyway, if you don’t like it, you can always just go get another one."

“And walk all the way back to the library? Hard pass.”

Lucia quipped after flipping to the next page in the novel.

“Speaking of the library, why aren’t we there right now instead of the courtyard?”

“Because the library is getting fumigated right now, dumbass.”

“Still, couldn’t you have at least chosen a place that was indoors for us to hang out at?”

“Maybe you should get a better idea of the school’s layout if you don’t like the places I choose for us to hang out at. That way you could start picking for us.”

“Point.”

“Besides, what’s the worst that could happen right now? A freak thunderstorm showing up out of nowhere?”

The moment that Lucia finished her sentence, I felt a couple droplets of water come into contact with the top of my head.

Then I heard a clap of thunder.

“Oh you have got to be fuckin kidding me.”

Lucia grumbled before pulling her wand out of her pocket and doing a few elaborate hand gestures that I couldn’t really follow.

It was the first time in a while that she used her magic in front of me.

A couple of seconds later, a medium sized shield purely composed of fire appeared above Lucia and me and… somehow kept the rain at bay.

Now I’m not some world renowned chemist but I’m pretty sure when fire comes in contact with water, it gets extinguished…

“Oi Lucia, how are you doing that?”

I asked, while staring in disbelief at the disk of fire floating above Lucia and me.

“Doing what?”

“You know, blocking water with a shield of fire.”

I said incredulously.

“It’s fairly simple, actually. I just make it so that the fire is hot enough to evaporate water.”

“How is that even possible? Wouldn’t your fire have to be as hot as the core of the earth for that to happen?”

“…Did your parents drop you down a flight of stairs when you were a kid? If that were the case, how would anyone be able to boil anything on a daily basis?”

“Ah right. Still, that’s pretty impressive.”

I said, while continuing to stare at the reddish orange shield that levitated above me.

“And here I was thinking that you were incapable of saying anything that wasn’t an insult.”

Lucia said, with a smirk on her face.

You’re one to talk. If the government ever created a nationwide profanity filter, you’d never be able to speak again.

“Well, if you did impressive things more often, I’d praise you more. But seeing as you are who you are, I’m pretty sure that’s not gonna happen anytime soon.”

“That’s rich coming from the guy who can’t even get fuckin lunch on time without my help.”

“And yet I can still do way more than you. Also, could you make the shield a bit bigger? It’s starting to feel a bit cramped.”

“Nah, I can’t make any more adjustments to this thing unless I want to feel drained until tomorrow. So bear with it for a while longer. I mean it’s not like this rainstorm isn’t gonna let up for the rest of the day right?”

“Now that you’ve said that, I have a feeling that the storm isn’t going to let up.”

“Wanna bet?”

“I think I’ll have to pass. Last time I made a bet with you, I ended up having to carry what seemed to be a box full of bricks up a rickety flight of stairs.”

“You’re no fun. And for the record that thing only had a couple of letters and a rough draft for a novel inside of it.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, honestly I was a bit surprised when you told me that you had trouble getting it to my dorm room.”

Lucia said in a condescending tone.

“Yeah yeah, rub it in. Also wait, your parents are novelists?”

“Nah just my mom, my dad’s a groundskeeper.”

“Ah I see, what genre do they specialize in?”

“Romance but they’ve been experimenting with more horror oriented stuff lately.”

“Sounds like a good shift to me, I mean they’d probably have more material related to that type of stuff anyway.”

“And why do you say that?”

“Well, they had to live with you for most of their life, right?”

I remarked, with a smug grin plastered on my face.

“Oh fuck off.”

“Anyhow, show me one of your mom’s novels sometime. I’d like to get a glimpse into the mind of the person who had the bright idea to bring you into this world.”

“Sure, why the hell not? I mean most of her stories don’t have much depth to them anyway so they’re kinda perfect for someone as braindead as you.”

Lucia said before shrugging her arms a little.

“...Didn’t you drop a novel the other day just because the protagonist got access to an intricate crafting system?”

“You know that I can’t fuckin stand systems! I get enough of that shit in my Abjuration class already.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

I replied while waving my hands dismissively.

A few minutes later, the rain stopped and once more the school was bathed in sunlight.

It looks like my prediction was wrong. Good thing I didn’t take Lucia up on that bet.

In response, Lucia simply snapped her fingers and caused the fire shield that was levitating above us, to disintegrate.

Then the school’s bells finally rang for the first time today, and indicated that classes were starting.
